OSU linebacker redshirting as a Junior?
I know we've had many discussions about this, but according to this article Tressel was redshirting this guy after he played for 2 years, and not medical....

I do it all the time in NCAA 11. Works like a charm.

I'm a bit surprised it's not more of a common practice. I'm not sure why the same wasn't done on a guy like J.B Fitzgerald this year. But you're right- it's money in NCAA. I try to redshirt everyone if I can, even if they play as freshmen and sophomores, unless they're just that much better than everyone I have on the roster.
We could perhaps see the same thing with Will Campbell next year, no?

If Campbell switches to offense, I'd expect it.

This is completely allowed in the NCAA. You have 5 years to play 4 seasons. If the guy wants to wait until someone above him graduates, so that he can play more, that seems pretty legit. I think we'd be happy to have some of the recent transfer take a redshirt year instead of walking off the team

Whats the big deal this guy red-shirted at the age of 31.

weird too b/c sabino was a five-star all america type recruit. it's pretty incredible that they could convice him to redshirt.

the presumed starter coming into fall camp. The reshirt issue has been really strange in that he was, if not the starter, one of the first men in...so we, as fans, were perplexed. Word began to spread that he and the staff wanted to have two full seasons as a starter, which this RS year would provide. He is and will be a very good player when he gets his chance though, he showed flashes in the first two years.
Unfortunately, the rumor is that we are burning his RS this weekend because of injuries...*

You have no room to complain...

I really don't. News today that he won't play this weekend, RS intact.

Who cares, really? They're not breaking any rules and it looks like they're making a move to keep a solid player in their system for a couple extra years. Not a big deal.

This is a not a big deal. Coach Tressel is not being sneaky or bending the rules in anyway. I can't recall who it was, but during a Thursday night game they said that the QB redshirted his Sophmore year.

Va. Tech wanted to do this with Tyrod Taylor a couple years ago. Crappy play from their senior starter led them to burn the redshirt a game or two in.
Assuming Tate doesn't transfer and there isn't a medical redshirt for Gardner (which I don't expect, with him travelling still), I wouldn't be surprised if Gardner is only used as an emergency option next year with the intention of redshirting.

the rule was you could only redshirt your freshman year, and any other redshirt had to be medical

I used to think that, too. Then I got drowned in a bevy of links that proved my lack of knowledge. I'm sure that will happen to you too, eventually.
The moral of the story though, is that if a NCAA player doesn't compete in a regular season game, then he is eligible to redshirt. The caveat with injuries comes if they have played less than 1/3 of the season and get injured, then they are eligible for a redshirt. Which is why DG's back stiffness (and lack of PT in the last 3 games) seem "coincidental." I don't have the links for this stuff, but I know some people do. I'm sure if you searched for it you would find something, too.

I believe they are able to get these guys to sacrifice their educations (and be hairless nuts) because there is this perception that OSU cranks out NFL caliber linebackers. Sure they have Bobby Carpenter, Na'il Diggs, Thaddeus Gibson, Larry Grant, A.J. Hawk, James Laurinaitis, Austin Spitler, Mike Vrable and Matt Wilhelm in the league but only Hawk and Laurinaitis are starters (I believe). We counter with Burgess, Crable, Foote, Harris, Jones and Woodley with Woodley, Jones and Harris starting and Foote one year removed from starting (not to mention Pierre Woods and Cato June who are fresh out of the league). Why do PSU and OSU get all this hype for being linebacker schools and we get none?

ah...sweet, elusive depth.

I think we need a sticky at the top of the board explaining the rules for redshirts. People just don't seem to get it. You may redshirt a player at any time in his career.

The likely reason you don't see it very often is that by a player's Junior year, if they haven't broken into the starting line-up for playing time then they are likely not a good enough player anyway. The program would rather he finish his 4 years and graduate than have him linger any longer than necessary.
But there are certain exceptions, and depth at certain positions later in your collegiate career can open up windows to redshirt that weren't available fresh/soph years.
