Tom Harmon Jersey
This may be impossible, but i was wondering if anyone was seen a Tom Harmon replica jersey anywhere for sale. I don't mean a current Adidas authentic jersey with '98 as the number but rather a replica of the 1938-1940 Michigan football jersey.
I did a Google search and really found nothing about buying one. So just asking is anyone was seen one around before and where?
Here is what i am looking for, for those that don't already know.
I don't know anywhere you would get an old school replica, but I do know that it would be difficult to get a modern one. Official stores are not allowed to sell jerseys with retired #'s on them.
I did not know that they couldn't sell jerseys with the retired numbers on them. I knew they could not sell a jersey with a past/present players name plate and the worn number of the player.
Thanks, i guess my search has ended.
You can sell a jersey with a past player's nameplate. I've seen fans at Michigan Stadium wearing Woodson, Brady and Biakabutuka jerseys. And of course, you can sell a jersey with the number of a current player. You just can't profit from a current player's name or image.
a Harmon "nameplate."
I just cannot imagine any sort of prohibition on retired numbers. I have a vague recollection of Al Wistert's daughter having a number 11 jersey of her own way back when we were undergrads.
I thought i read that rule on the M-Den website. It must just be a U of M rule for their officially licensed gear (when the M-Den was still the official retailer). Thanks.
I have a brand new adidas Harmon #98 jersey that I was going to frame and put in my home theater. If you are interested email me. jheilig at hotmail.com
Never heard that before.
If such a rule exists, it would strictly be a U-M policy, not an NCAA rule. The NCAA doesn't care about ex-players' uniforms.
Get a 3/4-length blue shirt, the heavier the better, and buy some tackle twill numbers from a hockey jersey number supplier or something. If you can't sew, outsource it to a family member or local varsity jacket store or something. Probably won't cost you much. You could probably even cruise eBay for an old navy blue football jersey-type shirt and come up with something to sew the numbers on.
Believe it or not, there's a whole community of people who make DIY throwback jerseys. UniWatch features them all the time. Here's the link for all the UW entries about DIY projects:
A real, true throwback Michigan jersey wouldn't even look like a current jersey at all. Back not too long ago, our "maize" was nothing like the current neonish maize, which is color-shifted for television and photography.
"maize duck tape" works well.
I agree, a proper Tom Harmon jersey has to be hand-sewn. He effing rocks.
Elipses Man called Dex out.
Ah, the good ole days.
I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I figure since I played a big part in destroying this thread I should at least try to do something productive.
Does anyone else find excuses to talk about Tom Harmon whenever they watch NCIS?
I was surprised to find out that Mark Harmon is Tom Harmon's son. He is actually named Thomas Mark Harmon. I'm also surpised Mark Harmon seems completely detached from UofM. I would think that he would make an appearance or two, perhaps at some sort of dedication for his father. Does anyone have any background on this?
Maybe it's because Mark grew up on the west coast, played football at UCLA, and has spent his entire adult life in Hollywood. He QB'd UCLA against Michigan in 1972, and was beaten soundly 26-9.
You beat me to it. I believe he was Academic All-American for UCLA. I love NCIS, but I have Stealing Home in my baseball movie collection, and still think of him in that role.
I always think of him as CJ Cregg's bodyguard/love interest from the West Wing. He was a silver fox for me, then my pops explained his whole Tom-Harmon's-son story. He claims Mark went to UCLA and not Michigan partly because he didn't want to forever be in his father's shadow - I have no supporting evidence for this.
That would make sense. Michigan also had a rough stretch through the 60's and the beaches of LA were pretty tempting, I am sure.
The dedication of what? There's nothing on Michigan's campus to honor perhaps its greatest all-around football player. Shouldn't there be -something- named after Tom Harmon?
The Team, the Team, the Team. No one player is bigger than the program.
So by that logic we shouldn't be naming things after former coaches, too? What about retired numbers?
Naming something after Tom Harmon creates no precedent to start naming things after every Tom, Dick, and Harry Michigan great. It's Tom Harmon. Amongst our 3 Heisman winners he looms largest.
Now that you mention it, I don't like retired numbers. What's done is done, but I don't want to see any more retired.
You can say that Harmon is a cut above (and I wouldn't necessarily disagree), but two other U-M players have won the same indiviidual honor he did (the Heisman), and there will probably be more to come. I don't really see how you can honor Harmon and not also Howard and Woodson, and any other player who goes on to win the Heisman. I'd rather just end the practice.
OK. But coaches are?
Just the ones that people like...I think.
Coaches (the great ones, anyway) stay longer than four years, and they supervise the entire operation, so yes, I consider them a greater part of the machine than any one individual player, and I don't mind having athletic buildings named for them. However, no coach is important enough to have his name on the football stadium.
And no one is suggesting Schembechler Stadium.
There wouldn't have been any problem, however, with naming the Glick Fieldhouse after Harmon, even though they're not a steel baron who donated a bunch of cash for the project. Or one of the practice fields. Or any number of other smaller things around South Campus. Someone of Harmon's caliber, on and off the field (he was a pretty substantial war hero as well), deserves more than a retired jersey number that isn't even displayed anywhere to begin with.
Hmmm....a lot of comments seem to have disappeared out of this thread. I wonder why.
It's because I was feeding trolls.
Geaux_Blue,
It's extremely convenient of you to excise the discussion that made you look hypocritcal from this thread. A+ moderating here.
It's always confused me why Geaux_Blue is a mod. Maybe he's the only one willing to do it... Personally, I preferred it when the only mods were Brian and the Varsity Blue guys.
There were always other mods other than Brian and the VB boys - they just didn't/don't wear it on their sleeve like Geaux_Blue.
OOOOHHH!!! And I got a warning e-mail from the system for accusing you of hypocrisy. Well done, buddy!
it wasn't me, take it elsewhere
Do you want me to cut and paste the system e-mail that said you deleted my comment?

If you're going to moderate this board, and call people's attention to your moderation powers as frequently as you do, you should perhaps avoid mocking a poster in the same thread you threaten to ban someone for mocking the same poster.</p>
where does that say I did it?
the system deletes any comments and ensuing threads when a comment is deleted. if a spammer account was suspended bc of comments in another thread, which appears to be the case, every comment that was attached to one of their messages is gone.
Probably because my pithy Tommy Boy quote was just too much for the Geaux_Blue to handle. Either that or someone just deleted every comment relating to Ducktapegate and ours happened to be included in that. I'm going with the latter.
Geaux-Blue sent me an e-mail, and satisfied by curiousity on the matter. Please don't spend any time on it.
Harmon looks like Tebow in the painting.
BRB, need to go wash my mouth out with soap after that last comment.
is there such a thing as a Tom Harmon jersey or what?
i'd like one too.
It drives me crazy when immature people haunt this site only to insult people and make trouble. We are all adults here. Can we not utilize the proper respect and decorum? the Brain Cook does not work his ASS off mainting this site for us to come in here acting like stupid little babbies. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
I don't know who this is directed at...but okay.
earning 3/4 of their points posting "potato salad" IMO.
is just being mean. but i posbanged him anyway cuz i am the better fan.
and potato salad biatches~!
Threads should be deleted in their entirety, or not at all. Also, Brian is really getting negbanged for that post? I believe that at least one person is voting more than once, and that person should commit seppuku.
you can't vote more than once. hell i'm getting negged after being accused of something i didn't do. thank GOD mgopoints are currently tied to the Greek economy and thus useless.
It just seems like a really odd and random negbang. Just don't drop below 10,000, I think you get terminated with no golden parachute.
