42nd anniversaries are the most emotional.
November 10th, 2017 at 9:48 AM ^
Geeze, that makes me feel . . . older than 42.

but this would clearly meet the definition of it

OK, I already know I am a dick and will get called as much, but does anyone really think we'd remember an anniversary where a mere 29 people died if it weren't for the song written about the wreck, and the fact that it has a local/Michigan connection? I'm still waiting for a song about the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that killed 250,000 people in Aceh, Indonesia in about 15 minutes...

Such foul language. I am sure your mother is not, um, proud of you...

I didn't see what you did there.

I cannot stand it when people shout "duh derp this is OT."
YES. WE KNOW. WE CAN ALL READ. WE CAN DETERMINE WHEN SOMETHING IS OFF TOPIC.

in Milwaukee (our company owned the boat). Very sad story.
November 10th, 2017 at 10:11 AM ^
Very sad from a human perspective, or very sad from an underwriting perspective? :-)

I can't help it. It's genetic...

I'm not an underwriter, a product manager, so I can't comment on that side of the business other than I know I would not want to be an underwriter
November 10th, 2017 at 2:54 PM ^
As an underwriter, I'd be underwater.

Love that song. Great tribute by Gordon Lightfoot.

I think it was Rutgers. Might play it at all of them but I am rarely there for most of pregame.

Both the Gordon Lightfoot version and the Migos cover. "Both versions are real toe-tappers" sez Coach Harbaugh.

My parents live on the lake and this is what mom said that storm was like. (Note: Johnny and Susie are friends and the "boat" is an aluminum rowboat)
"By far the biggest (28 ft) prolonged waves that anyone in our lifetime has seen around here. Power out, high winds, schools closed, etc. The water was up to the deck on the house at Johnny's. Loaders had to move the sand off the road in Au Train. Trees down, debris everywhere. We'll take photos when we can get down to the lake but it's still too dangerous. Dad's boat got flipped right up into the yard from the bank. There's a few articles online about the storm. We still don't have power but we had the wood stove for heat and the generator going for the frig, modem, lamps, etc. Susie and the girls came over last night to charge their cell phones."
Sad about what happened at Black Rocks. Feels like Superior claims people every year in Marquette, either at Black Rocks or Picnic Rocks.

2nd worst behind that Lee Greenwood travesty.
RIP sailors though.

I prefer the classic patrioric songs.
America the Beautiful and especially Battle Hymm of the Republic (because it makes me want to kill our enemies).

Hatters enemies list is long and varied and he keeps it with him at all times to avoid a Watergate type scenario

The ship went down right in front of where I grew up. I worked at the shipwreck museum as a kid for a summer. The museum plays this song on a loop for 10 freaking hours a day. I have an unnatual hatred for that song now. Im sure he is a nice guy, but I would throat-punch Gordy Lightfoot to this day if he walked by me on the street.

north shore, in the lee of a very tough north wind.
and an old story i am somewhat embarrased about but what the heck. i was in a buddy's small sailboat right next to the friegher channel the summer of '75 in the UP. there was no wind and we were becalmed. the fitz was bearing down on us, tooting its horn like crazy. they were right, we needed to get the heck out of the channel. but my brave and ever-wise 12 yr old self (after getting out of the channel) mooned the titz as it went by. i always wondered if that somehow altered the course of history. nah.

Weather's relatively calm here now, but two weeks ago we got hit with a storm that brough 10" of snow and produced waves so catastrophic that they damaged parts of the shoreline here and washed out a couple of roads. It was really something.
