NFL track record means shit to elite recruits.

They've likely been told (& its the truth) that they're headed to the NFL no matter what.

Would your draft stock be higher coming from a conference champion/playoff team or 3rd place in the B1G East division. . .?

These kids think they are nfl bound anyway and want to win championships.  There are easily 2 dozen other programs that have had more success than Michigan in their lifetimes.

isn't delegated by position, but rather region. I would assume that Jay Harbaugh probably recruits the west coast, Don Brown the New England area, Partridge is definitely the Georga/Southeast guy, and I would guess New Jersey is his if there's a strong enough connection. Zordich may have Pennsylvania and other areas, because of his connections. Normally the position coaches and sometimes coordinators will spend a majority of the time building the relationships and recruiting, and the head coaches will be used as a closer, while spending a majority of their time focusing on the top notch prospects on their board. I am at wits end with jayBaugh, but blaming him for something that's not on him isn't fair.

think the issue may be one of perception.  Our perception of ourselves v. everybody elses perception of us (us being the Michigan program, not "us" personally).  To the Michigan fanbase, certain things that have happened since Harbaugh arrived have just been "bumps in the road," part of something we saw as a bigger process.  But those moments have added up a little bit, and there have been some opportunities missed that are probably having an impact on our recruiting.  The ending to the Michigan State game in 2015 was not optimal, and the way the season ended last year, while not necessarily catastrophic, certainly hurt pretty bad. Two weeks ago did not help matters either.

The last two classes have been pretty damn good though.  It may be that players are seeing less of a chance to play here soon as our roster fills up.

Do you see that hurting Alabama or Ohio State's recruiting any?  Cause I sure as hell do not see it hurting Alabama or Ohio State's recruiting any and you cant swing a dead cat around those programs without hitting a five star waiting his turn  on the sidelines for another five star to get drafted.

I was trying to create a bright side where there isn’t one to be seen? I was between that and “ Harbaugh wants his guys and doesn’t care about stars.” Maybe I picked the wrong one. The simplest answer is that we have not played for anything meaningful in a long long time. It cannot be overstated how big of a game last year‘s Ohio State game was, and how much I hate the refs of that game.

I think it's pretty simple really. Most RB recruits don't want to be part of a rotating platoon that is play by play. It's one thing to platoon but here our guys are going in for a play at a time and sharing time with 3 others. A lot of other schools do it by drive or in some cases, not at all.

This isn't the NFL. Recruits can pick between many options for playing time.

As much as it sucks to say, if I was a RB recruit I would be heading elsewhere. Hopefully that changes as we keep getting good classes in and improve but I would not count on it as long as 4 backs are in the mix.

The last Michigan RB to break 1000+ rushing yards was Fitzgerald Toussaint in 2011, an undrafted free agent who is currently on the Steelers' practice squad.

The last Michigan RB drafted was Mike Hart in 2008 in the 6th round (#202 overall).

So a lot of the 2018 recruits were 8 years old the last time they might have potentially saw a "successful" Michigan RB.

probably has a lot to do with it.

An elite RB recruit is going to want to go somewhere that has had success running the ball and/or a line that makes that a high likelihood in the near future.

M has not been good at running the ball for a looong time and could easily be seen as a place were highly rated backs go to die a slow, quiet death. Grady, Green, Rawls...

Michigan's offensive line projects to be more than mediocre in ? amount of time.

It hurt big time when he was no longer on the staff. Cannot state this emphatically enough. Kids loved him. He played the position and has coached it at the highest level. To attract top recruits at a position....the position Coach matters as much as anything else.

Obviously he is a decorated back and coached RBs at a high level but I think he has a good understanding of ball overall. His best asset is his personality and the trust and bond he gets with his position groups. Because of his personality and him being pretty young I see him becoming a successful head coach one day. He has a really good mental approach to teaching and dealing with young people and I think he could be successful as more than a position Coach.

He missed BIG on the trail past 2 seasons.   Also other than in Detroit he had very few connections and was underwhelming in the development.  Not saying Jay is the answer, but Turner has a great relationship with Jay and we are still in on Noah Cain and others. Coach Wheatley like I've said on here before is my favorite Michigan player of all-time, however he has one mission right now and that is to become a head coach.  He was not going to stay long regardless, so getting a coach who wants to be here and is great at building relationships with prospects is better for us in the long run.  Good luck coach Wheat and good luck coach Jay.

Walker was a big get and people on the board will be pleased to know he has been kicking ass and responding very well as of late. That kid has real potential and hopefully we get to see it soon. He could be a difference maker next year. Najee was aL ways going to be tough to pull and the change over in staff really hurt those efforts to land him and retain a stud like AsiAsi. Coaching changes can really hurt recruiting more than we accredit. I think the RB recruiting going forward will be interesting. You have to sell more than the priveledge of Michigan to get elite backs in 2017. What else are we selling them that other schools aren't? That's the question we have to answer and hopefully pitch to young backs to get them on board. We don't pay kids....unlike some other programs.....so we have to figure out how to land top RBs. They and their parents and or coaches will absolutely be looking at the prospective Offense and position Coach in terms of picking a school. Those are huge factors.

Najee, Sanders, Mccall, & Akers all 4 of them he was lead recruiter on.  I also understand everyone recruited these kids; however Dillon and Samuels were not some great get after months of hard work.  We were both of their BEST offers and I don't think you can dispute that.  Walker was a gift.  After OSU getting soft on him and his senior season going in the tank I feel like it was more we had to take/offer/keep him.  OSU thought Evans was a DB, coach Wheat saw something different.  (we will see on that one).  Coach Wheatley recruits Detroit well. Stop.  Does he know the position well, does he have energy that is likeable, YES.  He didn't have enough juice to flip Kelly, and was in love with the Drake and Deveon.  I think Michigan has everything plus some to offer these kids, and i do not think all of the top running backs in the country are getting paid.  Style IMO has more to do with it, and ability to get the kids to the league.  Other than Mike Hart and Fitz cup of coffee in the league it's been a min.

I wish we would have been able to retain Wheatley for a couple more years because it's unfair to criticize him without seeing how his players developed over the course of an entire cycle.

Sometimes coaches see a prospect for their true potential and can get mold them into something special. Michigan saw Melvin Gordon as a safety and Kareem Hunt's best offer was Toledo, and now they are both top five RBs in the NFL this year.

I seem to remember the recruiting sites hinting that OSU cooled on him, otherwise he'd be a fu*king buckeye. The back they took in his place isn't exactly tearing it up though. Lol

You honestly don't think Running back coaches matter? Bama and OSU are obviously destinations...but those kids are also coached the heck up. They accelerate at the next level as well. All of that goes into the pitch.

BoCanHam15

What proof do you have? We were in on a few backs that BAMA recruited and half of their 5 stars don't pan out. You are just offering lip service. Are you saying that Damien Harris is doing better at BAMA, because of their running back coach? Check their O-line!

It is by far the easiest position to coach and you can't teach vision, instinct, or heart which are 3 of a RBS most important attributes. Anyone with a basic understanding of the game can teach ball security. So that leaves blitz pickup as the RB coaches primary responsibility. Obviously the backs have struggled with blitz pickups this year, but they weren't good at it last year either. Deveon was the best last year and he seemed to regress last year from the year before.

It's too bad Harbaugh/What didn't seem 100% simpatico for whatever reason. Still great we got him back in AA for a bit and pretty cool he got to coach these guys and spend that time with his son. Speculation: I bet Harbaugh hires the best WR or RB offensive position coach available this offseason and the staff shuffles to accommodate either way. If Drevno gets a head coaching he wants, I bet they hire at both of those spots.

Why should we be in on top recruits? The state of Michigan is relatively mediocre recruiting grounds, the only midwest state with consisten talent has ohio state picking off the top kids and for high schoolers out of the region the last decade of Michigan football has been one long pile of shit.  Sure Harbaugh brings excitement but he was never really known as an elite recruiter, good recruiter yes but he wasn't bringing in top 50 guys to stanford he was turning low 4 stars into great players.

I've wondered if there is a cultural fit obstacle for some.  Harbaugh and UM expect our student athletes to be students and athletes, and generally model citizens to boot.  I don't get the sense that UM is designing majors and fluff no-show courses for athletes to sleep through before practice.  UM's type of culture really appeals to a recruit like Rashan Gary, it seems.  But maybe not everyone.

Also, Ann Arbor can get cooooollld in ways that Bama never will.  That actually matters to some.

When your other choice is to go to an SEC school, sit the bench for a while, party all week without much scrutiny, pass all your nonexistent survey classes, and get a $100 handshake every so often that you then give back to the campus police officer who busts you with an escort in a car, and momma's rent paid for 4 years.

2018

Higdon > Evans > Walker > Samuels

3rd cow out of the barn usually gets 2-6 carries a game, not sure how he is going to be a "factor".  Here is to hoping you're right and he turns into Bo Scarabough. Nonetheless, he was in Wheatley dog house, and coach didn't recruit him.  He was a gift, and one we had to accept.  Not sure how any of this proves your point about our RB recruitment and how bad we are missing coach Wheatley.

You can't expect a clean slate for all 85 but the boys do a solid job off the field. Most come from really good families and really good dudes. Gary is one of the best I'll add. Great dude. That's telling when your biggest stars take time out to help kids and be respectful to strangers just because. Regarding Walker, I think he gets it now. In 2018 he will be a problem for the B1G

Alot of folks seem to believe that most top recruits are lazy and dumb if they choose to go anywhere but Michigan. On top of that - we recruit (and sometimes land) guys who wouldn't be able to academically hack it at UM if they were enrolled as an average student and not a footballer.

Than Meyer. I heard rumors that Urban pulled an offer from a 5* wr commit because of character concerns... There's certainly coaches out there that will take a talented kid no matter what though (pastor dabo and tricky Nick, etc). Harbaugh will start landing the elite talent if he continues to win big games. Edit: I'm assuming that Urban learned his recruiting lesson from his time in Florida.

For whatever reason we are usuallly late to the game in either offering for putting the full court press on top guys. By the time we start recruiting them in earnest, we are playing catch up to other top programs. Then you have the questionable practice of not contacting kids regularly (I.e., recruiting throughout the cycle) and we are left too many times nabbing kids that there is not a lot of competition for. The accepted narrative is that Harbaugh offers are issued only after careful scrutiny and evaluation akin to a NASA launch protocol, but Doyle's offer coming off his ESPN High School game telecast brings that into question.
