Maryland Defense under Durkin?

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

How is Maryland's defense looking under Durkin? I can obviously look up the statistics, but I'm wondering if anybody has been watching them.

From a quick glance at their schedule it seems like it has been fairly bad, but that might be because they are still trying to become scheme-disciplined?

Basically, hoping for some intel on our next victim.

From the PSU POV --- Maryland is the 2nd worst defense that I've seen.  Better than Purdue, but also worse than the likes of Kent State.

Keep it simple.  Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball.  Do that and U-M will get 35 points pretty easily.

I watched Maryland-Penn State a few weeks ago. It was bad. PSU ran the spread with McSorley and Barkley and it was 8 yards every play, one way or the other. It had that UM-Indiana vibe from last year where you sit back and realize there is zero reason for the offense to ever throw.

PSU got the ball with 0:41 left in the 1st half, up 3 and at their own 30.  PSU was clearly content to try a couple running plays: doubtful to go the whole field but at least they would go into the half with a lead.

3 plays --- ALL RUNS --- later, PSU was in the end zone.

Their defense simply cannot stop the run.

I think they look much better than last year. They really suffer when there is no offensive consistency (i.e. Perry Hills is out). Still they just gave up 42 at Indiana after holding MSU to 3 points in the 2nd half the week before.

The talent isn't there and I am sure they will improve next year. They'll have a young defense and an experienced offense and should hit 7 or 8 wins.

for personal reasons. This obviously put DJ in a tough spot.

Buh was almost certainly not on the list when DJ was putting his staff together back in December.

With heavy player losses from last year's D front and limited players in the pipeline from the Edsall Experience DJ and company are playing a lot of true freshmen and working to lay a foundation for the future. CB J.C. Jackson is the best player on this defense. Many expect to see him play on Sundays in the future.

Are just better suited to coaching/recruiting top level talent than they are at getting maximum results from mediocre talent.

I'd rather have Mike Leach as opposed to Lane Kiffin coaching my offense if I'm Washington State. I'd rather have Lane if I'm Alabama.
