OT - Lochte fabricated story of robbery
According to ABC News.

Anyone really that surprised?

That one word bothered me from the beginning when this story broke. I can guaren-fucking -tee you that if somebody put a cocked gun to my head my first response would NOT be whatever. "Yes sir, no sir three bags full" and "please, please, please dont murder me" maybe.
Even Lochte, as mind-numbingly stupid as he is reported to be, would understand that taking a bullet to the brain is bad and would not say "whatever".
August 18th, 2016 at 12:41 PM ^
the Mrs. rolled her eyes on that one as well.
August 18th, 2016 at 12:37 PM ^
Let's say Lochte and co. and making this all up.
Why?
What do they have to gain by making all of this up? What are they trying to cover up? That Lochte lost his wallet? That they were out late? I mean these aren't douchy teenagers looking for publicity. What could they possibility be trying to get out of making this story up?
If they really just made up an armed robbery story for the hell of it, they are f'ing idiots.
August 18th, 2016 at 12:46 PM ^
While its still a developing story, it looks like the swimmers caused some property damage at this now infamous gas station and either were met by "cops" who responded to the vadalism or in some other way were confronted about it.
I don't know ... a woman I worked with fabricated an entire story about sexual harassment because she knew she was going to be in trouble for sleeping through a couple meetings. Instead of taking the heat for her laziness, she implicated a company officer in very serious charges that were patently false, on face.
I think Lochte is stupid and though 32yrs old or whatever, still acts like a 17yr old entitled athlete.
August 18th, 2016 at 12:58 PM ^
It could be a scam the gas station runs. Drunk people come in late at night, are told they damaged the bathroom and a security guard on site demands money. If someone complains to the cops the manager shows them an already slightly damaged bathroom and of course there is no footage inside the bathroom so who are the cops going to believe? Stuff like this happens in 3rd world countries all the time.

August 18th, 2016 at 1:03 PM ^
The latest is that the fight with the attendant started when he told them to use the bathroom and they instead peed on the wall of the gas station.

Insert "that's how the water in the Olympic pool turned green" jokes here.
August 18th, 2016 at 1:08 PM ^
If the security guard confronted them outside the gas station demanding money in portuguese then I could see how 4 really drunk Americans would think they are being robbed. That would also explain why their cell phones weren't taken.

They were trying to make it semi-legit by saying that the money was for vandalism. If someone does in fact vandalize a gas station the security guard can't stick a gun in your face and demand you pay for it. That's robbery. They can call the police and have you arrested and the courts will sort out the damages later.
August 18th, 2016 at 2:59 PM ^
If that was what happend, Lochte had no reason to lie. But he just made shit up about getting pulled over by a fake police officer while IN THE CAB. Among other lies.
Thats not minor difference, that huge.
August 18th, 2016 at 1:19 PM ^
The video shows them being told to sit down, I assume under threat of death from a gun, and robbed. Even if they supposedly did damage to a bathroom or peed on a wall a rent-a-cop can't take money from you. They detain you and call the police in normal countries but this is Brazil we are talking about. By the way, peeing on a brick wall is not vandalism, it's where you are supposed to pee if you are out on the street and can't find a bathroom.

ya big silly. Apparently Rio has cracked down on pubic urination in the past
August 18th, 2016 at 12:43 PM ^
other than for tampons or possibly maxipads, this whole affair likely won't parlay into many endorsement deals for Mr Lochte
August 18th, 2016 at 1:01 PM ^
Shocking. Not shocking.
Bomani Jones called this from second 1 and I instantly agreed.
You don't get robbed at gunpoint and leave with your effing watch and $1,000 shoes. It just doesn't work like that.
Unless you're getting robbed by Michael Jordan or Phil Knight, I just don't believe you're going to have someone shove a gun in your face in Rio say "give me all of your money, but you can keep your sweet watch and your $1,000 shoes." The story just played into the fears of too many people and grew like a wildfire.
It was always a made up story. It was just a matter of how far they were going to ride it out or if someone could prove them wrong. Problem is when you're shitfaced at 6am...you're usually not thinking of the best plan to cover your tracks.

I bribed the cops in Mexico for Spring Break. They just asked me for all of the cash in my wallett or I'd go to "jail". Yes, I was drinking in the street and was in the wong, so I call it a bribe, but maybe Lochte calls that robbed?

Doesn't mean Lochte isn't lying, just that I'd need some actual proof before believing them.
August 18th, 2016 at 1:53 PM ^
A rent a cop at the gas station pointed a gun at them and demanded hundreds of dollars in Portuguese for supposedly peeing on the wall or kicking a door. I would call that armed robbery.

the alleged video is from a Brazilian source shown to ABC News. Where is this video? Did the judge see it?
Also, assuming the video is 100% accurate, doesn't mean Lochte wasn't robbed later.
August 18th, 2016 at 11:00 PM ^
So his teammates are lying on him? Give me a break.
Again...who gets robbed in Rio and gets to keep their $1,000 sneakers and there sweet watch that he clearly put in the bin when he was checking back into the Olympic Village after everything (laughing and joking)?
Who?
That would have to be the dumbest robber in the history of robbers...give your credit card that you're going to cancel and can track and get video of me trying to buy stuff. But keep your jewlery, your expensive shoes, everything else.
Or no. He fucked up. Paid for the door he broke and came up with some bullshit story.

Right up there with Harding.

A Brazilian police source told ABC News that "one of the swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard" on the night of the reported incident.
I will say that if I were a visitor in a foreign land, it would seem only natural to want to barge into a barhroom and pick a fight with security. That's how I always envisioned my trip to the developing world too.
Kind of interested to see how or if the authorities in Brazil would go after Lochte now, seeing as he made it back here. That seems like it would be al lengthy, messy process. I wonder if any of the MGoLawyers have ever been involved in extradition hearings.
August 18th, 2016 at 2:13 PM ^
Still doesn't give the rent-a-cop the right to stick a gun in your face and demand money. That's called armed robbery. The police would have to come and make an arrest and damages would be sorted out in court and they would not be $400 for peeing on a wall (turn on the hose) or breaking down a bathroom door. A sturdy, steel door is impossible to break with your fists and feet anyway so it might have needed a paint touch up which is $5.

the arrogant, ignorant American tourist stereotype.

Lochte didn't lie.
http://www.tmz.com/2016/08/18/ryan-lochte-robbery-lie-rio/
Video shows them peeing on a wall (not vandalism, no damages) and then ordered to sit on the ground. The gas station edited the part where they were ordered to get out of the car because there was probably a gun.
If there was a gun it's armed robbery.
Free Lochte.

Weapons and corruption at a gas station in the middle of the night in Rio? No way!
August 18th, 2016 at 2:40 PM ^
Can happen with a lot of alcohol and being out past 2:00 AM......I think that one account (the security tape) had them arriving at the Athletes Village at about 4:30 AM.

If you are in a foreign country, especially where English is not spoken, getting shit faced and wandering around late at night might not be a great idea. Breaking into someplace so you can pee while shit faced in said foreign country is also not good.
However, getting the hell out of that country before your buddies can book a flight might be a good idea, especially if you lied to the cops about the whole thing.
August 18th, 2016 at 3:38 PM ^
Brazilian authorities just admitted guns were pointed, money was demanded, money was given, but it wasn't armed robbery. Ok Brazil.
August 18th, 2016 at 4:44 PM ^
Why did anyone believe Brazil for even 1 second? I would trust a drug dealer in the US before I trusted the police in Brazil.
Not that Lochte's story is 100% correct, but if someone with a uniform pointed a gun at him and demanded money, that's enough for me to say he wasn't just completely making the whole thing up, even if he wasn't being completely forthcoming about the full extent of the situation. Rent-A-Cops don't get to draw their weapons on you and demand cash because you broke the bathroom door or peed on the wall.
Amazing tha the gas station edited out the part of the video where the weapon was drawn.
August 18th, 2016 at 4:42 PM ^
Amazing. The police chief of Rio admits that there was a gun pulled on the swimmers, admits that they paid money, yet says that this parting with cash/credit cards was voluntary and does not constitute robbery. And they want an apology? Sure, apologize for peeing on the gas station and being drunken assholes-- that's fine. But if I were the swimmers, I wouldn't apologize for saying tthey were robbed; THEY WERE.
Also, Lochte claims the video was edited, which actually jives with what the Rio police chief just said. Links: http://www.tmz.com/2016/08/18/ryan-lochte-robbery-lie-rio/ (Lochte saying edits); http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-37115778?post_id=10106737871922473_10106922971471493#_=_ (BBC discussing the public statement of the Rio police chief made this afternoon).

Always look for motive. What possible motive would Lochte and company have to make up a story about someone pulling a gun on them and demanding money?
Now, I can see the motive for them leaving out the part about them peeing on the wall. And I'm guessing that when they told the story originally, they never expected it to be blown up into world news like this. But there was NO MOTIVE for them to just make up a story about guns being drawn and money being demanded. Lochte is already semi-famous. He's been on TV a ton of times. He doesn't need attention like this. He would have to have a mental-illness level of pathological hatred for Brazil/Rio to need to make up some story like this as a negative PR-strunt.
You would only make up a crazy story like this if it got you out of trouble somehow, and there was no trouble for them to be getting out of. The story only CAUSED trouble for them. It made no sense that they just made the whole thing up.

First thing I was taught by the long time, country wise PA in our county was apply Occaams Razor. Too many assumptions and it's probably not the answer. In this case, it just makes sense that these guys got shaken down one way or the other. For thse athletes no matter how drunk or stupid to just make up the story made zero sense.

Are you watching The Night of on HBO? Quietly the best how on TV IMO.

this was response to JamieH below.
Also, the Brazilian dude in my office said from the first second that this happens every day, every minute in Brazil. There is some serious dislike in Brazil for 'Murica these days. Except for all the the ladies looking to escape their third world existence and get to the US or wherever which leads us to why these chaps were out in the first place.
By the way this reminds me of the boy in the balloon media frenzy about 10 years ago. You knew from the get go that the facts did not add up.
