Sam Webb has a new "gut feeling" re: D-line starters

Submitted by SAMgO on

His ever-reliable "gut feeling" on Week 1 starters as it stands:

Ones: Gary - Wormley - Glasgow - Taco

Twos: Marshall - Hurst - Mone - Winovich

If you're right when we take the field for the first time then you can "tell me so". I'm all aboard the Gary hype train, but believing this before he's even practiced with the team is a bit much for me. I hope he starts because I know if he does then he's earned it. Harbaugh is running a meritocracy. I don't care how highly rated you are coming out of high school, you're going to earn PT under this staff.

but we don't know how Gary will seal the edge against college OL, how fast he will learn all the calls, will he stay home on misdirection plays, can he diagnose screens, etc. If all he has to do is rush the passer then ok but there is more to DE than just rushing the passer.

I'm totally on board with Gary because he's the consensus #1.  But, he's a true freshman who hasn't even reported to school yet, put on a UM uniform, practiced a snap or drill yet, etc.  How can you give someone a starting job before earning it?  Maybe he'll have enough time, reps, and shows enough ability to prove it during fall camp, but to make that call now seems a little strange.

I hear what you're saying, but I don't think it should be the expectation before he proves it.  That's sorta the whole point of the coaches not guranteeing it.  Everyone has to prove it first and why I'd personally be surprised if he's a starter in game #1.  Maybe a few games down the road, and maybe he proves it in fall camp, but until such time I personally would not be putting that expectation out there.  It's also not fair to him IMO.

Talking about starters is one of the dumbest conversations in sports.  A player can play 99% of the game, including the most important plays at the END of the game, but because he wasn't in the game for the first play he's not a starter.  I'd be more willing to bet that the coaches let the young players get used to the Big House and sit them the first series which will probably be a 3 and out.

We are playing Hawaii.  Settle down.  It doesn't matter who starts.

It matters to the players, and to the coaches.  They're all hyper competitive, and they all want to start.

If you say "given the amount of rotation this line has, it's not as important who's in the first series, because the second guy can be just as productive in terms tackles, TFL, sacks, etc", that's one thing.  But you don't understand this level of football if you think they don't care who starts, or that a (presumed) coach's opinion of who will start is not a statement on one player being better than another.  They do and it is.

Gord has a point to some extent, but yeah, this is absolutely true.

From a distance, especially in the age of advanced stats, it's easy to forget the huge role that personalities and psychology play. Nothing wrong with advanced stats at all. But there's a reason coaches read motivation and psych books too.

It's interesting that, even with all the excitement about him, manny here are still underestimating Rashan Gary. Those returning are excellent. Gary is a generational talent. Not only will he be a starter, he'll also be the best player on the team in 2016.

The coaches (Tuiotti and Partridge) at last night's camp were raving about Rashan obviously. Not that we should care, but I think Nate Johnson will be Rashan's roommate. I overheard that conversation between Nate, Partridge, and Jedd Fisch.

Could mean Gary is that much of a beast or that our defensive line isn't as strong as we thought it was. It's odd for a true freshman to start right away like that at that position. Guess we will find out.

I have no inside info whatsoever, but Sam has a good track record of not stepping on the program's toes. To me, announcing this could easily be stepping on the program's toes - unless a coach told Sam it was ok or even asked Sam to post it in the first place.

All guesswork on my part, but it seems to me like he wouldn't post this with the 'gut feeling' label on it unless a coach wanted it leaked.

So - why did the coaches want this leaked? Whom are they trying to motivate? Godin's not on the list; maybe him. Mone to get back to where he was? Hurst to crack the starting lineup?

Just my thoughts.

Yeah, maybe. Submarine and all that. Definitely guesswork on my part, as I said.

But whether the coaches want it to be that way or not, the players will read what's said about them. Or a friend will, and it will get back to them.

If I'm not mistaken, the coaches can't have contact with the players on the roster right now. So it seems that this might be an ideal way for certain types of motivation to be communicated to the players.

But... who knows?

I think the starters and at which spot could really change from game to game. My only expectation is that Wormley will finish the year, if all are healthy, with the most snaps. Depending on match-ups he should be able to move inside and out almost equal amounts of success. I think when we play MSU I'd like to see Mone and Glas on the field at the same time with Wormley on the edge. Actually if they are both doing well I'd like to see those big guys play a lot together. They remind me of more of a late 90's, early 2000's NFL line the beat teams with power and limited the runs on the inside while making it easy for our LBs to run free.

holding up at the point is my concern for Hurst. If he doesn't get closer to 300 he might have to come off the bench because he won't be able to play the lions share of snaps that I am sure the staff is hoping for.

They play different positions. Mone and Glasgow are both nose tackles, and having them both on the field would make our defensive tackle position very stout but somewhat slow. We have enough good defensive linemen that not all of them can start. No matter who's on the second string, there's going to be someone saying the exact same thing as you, just about a different player.

Yea I probably should have made it clear, I'm not looking for Mone and Glasgow to play a ton but I do think at times, against teams that want to run inside or that are run heavy, those guys inside with Worm on the edge is a very stout front...

In the same mindset I'd like to a "Nascar" type package like what the Giants ran during their super bowl runs with something like a Taco/Worm/Gary on the inside with a speed rush from a Winovich and Marshall... Maybe even McCray if he has pass rushing skills...

I love multiple fronts and multiple looks but it is easier said than done. Part of what Peppers so special is he is smart enough to play all over and know what he is supposed to do and he doesn't slow do to think. Most guys can't do that. Would love if we could.

Gary has not come in yet.
Any depth chart he is on is pure speculation. he has not ever repped with experienced college players.
gary might perform in practice and earn it this fall.

Mone our #3 overall player going into the season last year before injury is a two!? Man. Speaks volumes about our DLine this year.

I'll be more interested in what lineup plays in big time moments at end of games. It will most likely depend on matchups / who is playing well that day but to me it's between these 2 lineups in current completely speculative offseason land:

Wormley - Hurst - Glasgow - Taco

Gary - Wormley - Glasgow - Taco

Gary is a foot-BAWL player. He is a freak, high motor, competitive, violent guy - does that sound like another guy on the team who happens to be from NJ? Besides his high upside, it's also a good idea to play him with the most disciplined, solid platoon so he can turn it loose with less downside. Plus he will face fewer double teams if the other three are stronger - he basically has mentors on the field. The second platoon is just as reliable.
