It's a part of it. Recognition of the shot, getting out from under the basket, and a lot of "want to" plays a big role, too.

Boxing out is a lost art in basketball these days, similar to defense. AAU basketball puts an emphasis on the offensive side of things and kids are not worried about defense or reboudning. To answer your questions, no (IMO) its not hard to teach, but its not being taught to kids early on.
