Suggestions for Autographed Items
I have a friend who will get me the autograph of one of our living Heisman trophy winners, so long as I provide the item to be autographed.
I think I'd prefer a helmet over a jersey, but I am looking for suggestions here.
Should I purchase one of the newer helmets (Schutt) or the traditional stand-by (Riddell)?
Also, any suggestions for a particular brand of marker and color that work best?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks and Go Blue!

Schutt looks dumb in replica helmets. Looks like a fish bowl. Riddell.
I'm very careful about buying things because of the issues with the color Maize and how there's 50 shades of them. The helmet on MDen's site look nothing like they do in person.
The wings are very glittery in person and it still has the highlighter adidas Maize.

New book "50 Shades of Maize". Where millionairre coach Jim Harbaugh abuses opponents. But its sexy.

Do a helmet rather than a ball. Balls deflate over time and the bladders go bad so you can't reinflate.
Jersey if you have the wall space. At least with helmets they can go on a shelf or a desk or whatever.

isn't 'whole milk carton' the permanent answer to this question now?
Rank: Jersey, Helmet, Ball

I realize he is a Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl participant (either as a champ or as an MVP), but how can you expect one man to sign the ENTIRE milk carton?

I have a mini helmet signed by Denard. The wife keeps removing it from its place as centerpiece of our dinner table.
Jerseys can be screwed into wall forever.

I also have a Desmond jersey signed and shadowboxed that I love (it now has a nice signed whole milk jug on the shelf next to it) but my only small complaint would be I wish he would have a larger signature. I feel like his is so damn small on that giant number. Just a random thought

I loved signed helmets. I have one from Woodson and Denard. Plus who doesn't love the look of the winged helmet? Jerseys look great as well when put in the right shadow box. I have a football signed, but it doesn't have the same great look as the helmets.

I try to have a wide variety of items, helmets, pictures, tickets, magazines, footballs. Others I know only collect one item. Also consider display space.
Ive never had any issues with bladders going bad in my footballs. Two of mine are each over 35 years old signed by the teams from '77 and '80 both still hold air and look great.
Tip for signing autograph balls (ones with the smooth leather not ribbed like game balls) have it signed with ball point pen as opposed to sharpie. The sharpie is absorbed into the leather and disappears after a while. Ball point pen never does unless left exposed to direct sunlight for many years.
Paint markers can be a good option but they also can be finicky and not write well or blast blobs of paint on the item or signer, and can be smeared easily. Best bet is to go to an art supply store and get a high end set of pens that are fade resistant. I always carry Blue, Silver, Maize, and Black for autographs depending on what item and where it's signed.

And if this sort of thing is not cool I apologize, just seemed fitting with the rest of the thread.

(An apocryphal story from way back.)
Gore Vidal and Truman Capote are dining at a relatively posh NY restaurant (Tavern on the Green?), when a woman recognizes Vidal. She asks him for an autograph, and when he asks for paper she hands him an eyeliner and says "autograph my breasts". Vidal obliges.
The woman's date is furious, and he approaches Capote. He pulls out his joint, and asks Capote if he would sign it - and the man glares defiantly at his date. Capote gives the man a bemused look, and says "well, I suppose I could initial it."

The Woodson Rose Bowl interception photo personalized and signed. I'd guess it's 24"x30" or so and is a great conversation piece. I bought the print itself off the AP website, and then a friend of a friend arranged for the signature. I'm sure you could have some great photos to choose from there or from other services.
If you do a photo, make sure you put it behind light resistant glass and try to keep it out of direct sunlight. I also have a Bo signed football and the signature has faded so I basically keep it in a dark place all the time, which kind of undermines the whole point of having a collectible. The photo has done fine after almost 10 years.

Jersies are great but you need a lot of wall space to display one and getting one mounted properly is expensive. A helmet is easy to move around, goes on almost any shelf, it easy to grab and take for another autograph and, frankly, the helmet is THE iconic Michigan item. Any of the jersies, except, arguably some of the oddball brandonized ones, are bland by comparison.
February 23rd, 2016 at 6:24 PM ^
Helmets are definitely easier to display, especially if you're a little short on space or want something that you can place just about anywhere. As someone with a small-ish ranch for a house (not sure of your situation, of course), that has been much better for space than jerseys, although I have a few of those signed as well.
