OT -- Best Beers in Michigan

Submitted by BoiseBlue on
As I'm celebrating a successful signing day with a cold brew, I was curious as to the favorite microbrews of the MGoBoard. Having gone to college in Grand Rapids, I'm partial to the West Michigan microbreweries such as Bells, Founders, New Holland, and Arcadia. What are your favorite beers? My top 3: 1. Bells Oberon 2. Founders Centennial IPA 3. Bells Winter White

Yup, $15 bucks here in MI as well for a six pack. I don't buy it often because of that, but if it's on tap anywhere (Ashley's in A2), it's the first thing I order. I'm betting it'd be a pretty hard to find on tap out of state, so if you're a fan of that style, give the sixer a try. Its definitely worth it to me and is one where you'd be smart to ration that six pack out over time. Not exactly a session beer. It's quite malty and chewy. Packs a lot of punch in both flavors and alcohol. Has that barelywine smell to it. You can get more descriptions and opinions about it at Beeradvocate: Third Coast Old Ale

If I may I'd like to give some beer props to Original Gravity in Milan. Owner/Brewer Brad is a UM grad and does a hell of a job making some tasty brews. Living on the West side I have a nice selection from Bell's, Dark Horse, and Founders to choose from, but I always try to make my way down to OG when I'm in the area. 1. OG - Vanilla Java Porter 2. Dark Horse - Reserve Special Black Ale 3. Bell's - Brown Ale 4. Founders - Dirty Bastard If you ever get to Grand Rapids, I recommend hitting HopCat. There you will find beer tap heaven. http://hopcatgr.com/main/BeerList.aspx

You'd probably have to go THERE to get it, though they're supposed to ship out now: English IPA and Red Sky in the Morning from Frankenmuth Brewing Co. are both excellent.

Oberon was the best beer on earth about 4 or 5 years ago. The past couple years I have been disappointed that late spring day when I go to Bell's for the Oberon release party and find an over carbonated light colored beer that I can see right through. What happened to my sweet, heavy, nectar of the Gods that was so thick I couldn't see my hand on the other side of the glass. I miss you Oberon. Also Bell's Pale Ale is a very underrated brew.

At Bell's Eccentric Cafe they often have "Poolside" in the summertime, which is almost like a cherry Oberon. It's absolutely ridiculous. They did a small batch run that I bought at Siciliano's in GR without realizing it was a pretty exclusive product - a Double IPA called The Oracle. I'm sorry you guys missed it, because I am hereby naming it The Greatest Beer of All Time.

Anyone interested in microbrews and on the west side of the state near Grand Haven, should check out my friends bar they are opening up. It will be the only micro brew in Grand haven and should be opening mid march? They are shooting for st patricks day, but are unsure yet. Depending on how much brew they can make by that time. If you have facebook, look it up Oddside Ales. I have been taste testing a lot of their beers and they are all pretty solid

Watered down is how I'd describe it too. The way it used to be, Oberon was so orange and hazy with unfiltered goodness that you could hardly see through the glass. Now, it's almost clear and seems over-carbonated. Still good, but not nearly as good as it used to be.

Is it just me or is Oberon entirely overplayed now? For some reason I don't like it nearly as much as I used to. And don't get me started on places that serve it with an orange slice.

1. Bell's Two Hearted IPA

2. Arbor Brewing's Phat Abbott Trippel

3. Short's Pandemonium Pale Ale

4. New Holland's The Poet Oatmeal Stout

5. Short's Huma Lupa Luscious

6. New Holland's Dragon's Milk.

2-5 are pretty much interchangeable to me, depending on mood. Nothing beats Two-Hearted Ale. I've been really into the stuff from Short's lately. Haven't had a single beer of theirs that wasn't fantastical.
