GLI Championship Open Thread: Michigan vs. Michigan Tech

Submitted by gwkrlghl on

#10 Michigan (10-3-3) vs. Michigan Tech (11-6-2)

Michigan defeated Northern 3-2 yesterday while Tech overcame a 2-0 deficit to MSU in the 3rd and won in OT. Michigan is looking for their 6th GLI crown in the last 10 years while Tech is looking to add its 2nd since 1980 after breaking the seal again in 2012.

Speaking of which, MSU choked away another 3rd period lead tonight and lost in OT. Up 1-0 in the 3rd the Northerns scored with about 4:00 to go and then won it in OT. MSU finishes 4th. This is looking like it'll be Anastos' last season.

TV is FSD or BTN+. I have neither so it's radio for me.

Bob Mancini never stayed in one place for very long.

I remember those Tim Watters years. Oof. The records at the end of the tenure may be the same, but those teams were probably even worse than what Jamie Russell did there. That 1999-00 team would have struggled against D-III competition. Somehow they managed to beat LSSU twice that year, once at the GLI.

I believe at that time that they were financially pinched, and didn't want to eat the contract. That and he lived a little longer off of that winning season a few years earlier.

You have to realize that before last year, MTU had NOT been a national power since John MacInnes was still alive and coaching in the early 80s. And MTU was simply not putting up the necessary dollars to bring the program forward, on and off the ice.

how good is that guy?

I love that he's on the Wings and FA's will want to come to Detroit to skate with him, by the time the new arena opens, Detroit will be really back in the hunt soon.

If you check the posting times, I believe the first Michigan goal came right after Wolv/Iowa's companions told him to change channels.

EDIT:  Sorry, it was the tying goal.  But of course that was the more important one.
