Lorenz: Dylan Crawford "Expected to Decide Jan 9th"

Submitted by alum96 on

With another 2 crystal ballz in today for Dylan Crawford the writing appears to be on the wall in regards to his ultimate decision; this leaves just one holdout out of anyone who has made a pick the past 4-5 months.  Lorenz is indicating today Crawford should be announcing at the Army AA game Jan 9th so you need not only watch for Nauta that day.

This now certainly looks like the guy Ahmir Mitchell hinted at as a 4th commitment "coming soon".  If UM can land Delance on the 2nd it could make for another heck of a week in recruiting with two top 125 kids.

Crawford, Gary, Long, Hill, and one offensive lineman is who I see us finishing out with. I could see a scenario where Long goes to Washington and Michigan picks up a linebacker commit as well.

If T. Davis is "trending" towards MD it may be because we've been stalling/slow playing him - why I do not know?!

I read here earlier in the week he was virtually the only high-profile lean our coaches didn't visit in-home before the "Dead Period" began.

So this leaves a few possibilities:

JH/Drev just don't like him as much as the "experts?"

They really believe the #s crunch on signees will preclude taking another OG (the case I've been making for weeks is take Davis & Delance - Onwenu can be a NT if the depth chart shakes out that way, I've always felt he has more upside there anyway.)

Or - he really is trending towards MD for whatever reason so they just didn't invest their time in visiting?

There're certainly folks on here with more knowledge than me, maybe they can provide further insight on why things with T. Davis "cooled"?

The Opening was a camp last Summer. If I'm not mistaken Onwenu has dropped in the rankings during his Senior season of actual play. His size, footwork & stamina may be part of the reason?

I'll posit that those things are less of an issue at a position of frequent substitution like DL. I'll go further and state that in my opinion being a "road grader" is more valuable in collapsing a pocket than in maintaining one...

We'll see how it plays out but I hope we take Davis & Delance. Davis is still a higher ranked prospect at guard than Onwenu anyway, for whatever that's worth?

This comment makes no sense. Usually, the best offensive lineman in high school plays tackle. And if you look at Rivals' rankings of offensive guards, that still holds true. The #1 OG, Patrick Hudson, plays tackle in high school. So does the #3 OG, Landon Dickerson. And #4, Ben Bredeson. I didn't bother to go any farther down the line.

Also, Michigan's two starting offensive guards (Ben Braden, Kyle Kalis) were tackles in high school.

If "playing out of position" hurts your rankings, then why do 3 of the top 4 offensive guards in the country play tackle in high school?

The good thing is that all three of the things you mentioned are fixable. He won't be playing for at least two years which allows him to get into the college weight room and nutrition program. Stamina is something that will come with him losing weight and working out at the next level. And footwork is different at tackle then at guard so the scouts were most likely judging him off of that. I really like the prospect of Onwenu playing next to Newsome on the left side.

I think it's as simple as we want an OT and Davis is an OG.  We were keeping in contact in case they missed out on the OTs out there and we still had room.

My guess is they know they are getting Delance so they let Davis know there was no longer room.  Made his choice easier

Or the flip side, we aren't getting Delance so we told Davis we have room for him so he is in a hurry to commit to us.

Or we have room for both and we gave Davis the green light to commit.

So really I have no idea, don't think we get shut out though.

Don't have the link but saw a video from yesterday of Lavert Hill working out in a Michigan hat saying " Go blue Baby, you already know what it is "

So this is good.....
