Grant Newsome redshirt burned

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
Apparently this happened really early in the game as he was the 6th OL

Jack Miller is another perfect example of how a fifth year is not inevitable even if the player would be a starter that year.  He may not have been likely to be a pro player, but he also decided he had graduated and did not need to do it any longer.

When Taylor Lewan - who was good enough to go pro - decided to stay around for a fifth year, everyone was surprised at his choice.

There are many reasons to not count on that fifth year.  Let's hope that in Newsome's case it's because he is going to be good enough to be a high draft pick.

Message board speculation and all that but who knows...maybe Newsome just outperformed every other option and earned it (which IMO sends a pretty clear message to the rest of the team and recruits) or maybe the other options were/are injured. Or maybe Harbaugh screwed this up and is mortgaging the future of the Oline for short-term gain. No way to know from here..but if I had to bet that last one gets the long odds. Everything Harbaugh has done since returning to AA looks like he's building a program for the long haul.

His head and wonders what's up with his redshirt? Not a big fan of the move at all. Considering u have Dawson and others that could play. But it is what it is, but it's not a popular move by Coach.

Good God I hate checking the board sometimes. Until all of you naysayers have coached in a BCS game and the Super Bowl, shut the fuck up. It's JMFH, not John L. Smith. The dude abides by a system that has worked time and time again. If he feels Newsome is good enough to be out there, then put him the fuck out there. The way we're recruiting at O line, it's all going to work out just fine.

it should serve as a notice of what this coaching staff would think of the criticism Hoke has received on this site for his redshirting decisions.

If Newsome does not play, or only contributes 1-2 plays per game over the next 4 weeks, this is a bad decision. There is a reason 99% of freshman OL redshirt. Very puzzling decision by Harbaugh.

So what ARE the appropriate number of plays?

By the way, he played WAY more than 1-2 in this game. In fact, he was in on almost every non-3 and out drive at some point.

For whatever reason Drevno was obsessed with the 6-man OL tonight, I'm not sure what he saw or thought he saw, but it never really worked in the run game even though we tried over and over.

However, it worked wonders in the pass game and provided plenty of protection.

lol if Hoke did the same thing you "Smart Guys" would be crucifying him. At least I have coached the game, for almost 6 years now, unlike you "Blog Coaches". Anyone that questions anything is just wrong lol. Just funny. I'm excited about Grant's potential, as he will be a good player, but this decision is puzzling at this moment in time.

For the record, I've never complained about burned red shirts and I always think it's silly. If they guy can play, play him. Worry about 5 years from now 5 years from now. And you can't rely on hindsight to say whether something was a bad decision or not. The coaches are making decisions based on the info they have at the time. They feel, right now, that's it's worth it to play Newsome. Why fans doubt that is dumbfounding to me.

question can he redshirt next  year if he doesn't play at all? Anyway, my guess is Cole moves somewhere on the inside next season or Newsome beats out Magnusson.

He's obviously making progress and passing up other OL. He could in turn be passed by other players next year, but that would be unexpected. He's burnt his redshirt without winning a starting job, so I don't expect that will determine whether he redshirts next season.

My guess is the same as yours. He'll be tough to keep out of the starting lineup next year.

Ignore the "trust the coaches" arguments, because those are lazy.  But it is preposterous to me that anyone would find it UNACCEPTABLE to burn a redshirt in efforts to win a game which quite literally came down to inches.

The team wanted to win this game, the one they were playing, the one right in front of them that was back and forth all night with injuries all over, hanging in the balance on a knife edge with one play here or there potentially swinging the game.  You can't just throw away games that are winnable.

For all we know winning this game is the difference in perception to a top recruit of "program returning to dominance" vs. "program still in rebuilding".

Might have a better arm, but to say he's got better vision and is a better option than Rudock is ludicrous at this point. He looked good for approximately 1 of his 3 drives.

Luckily that was all he needed in the end, but I don't Rudock has to worry about his job getting taken away unless he's seriously injured.

He will probably be a 1st to 2nd round pick by his fourth year in the program. Also I see that Harbaugh does care about RS because I was for sure thinking Morris was coming out but he wouldn't put him out there.

Or Speight is better than Morris.
Some people are still in a dream world that Morris is going to be a wunderkid who gives us 2 good years as a starter  The Newsome example shows you Morris would be playing if he gave us the best chance to win tonight.  Period.

Morris is being rs as a favor IMO so he can immediately transfer and play (if he graduates early) somewhere else in 2016.

If Morris was better than Speight he'd have played tonight.  See: Newsome.

What is with the "Morris is awesome" people. Did they go to La Salle with him? Are they from his neighborhood. What has he done in football in the last 4 years that indicate he is the second coming of NFL Brady that some people seem to believe he is? He obviously needs work and IS NOT SECOND ON THE DEPTH CHART. I'm not quite sure where the disconnect is here.

I don't think there are any "Morris is awesome" people since last year. I think there are still "I hope Morris puts it together because he has the physical tools to be awesome" people. However, being passed by Speight at this point may put the first nail in the coffin on that one now.

Are you never happy WD? Seriously, we finally have a head coach he can lead us back to the glory days...something that seemed close to impossible after 10 plus years of garbage play, coaching, and player development. Now, you point out flaws in his coaching strategy, in particular the burning of redshirts, with some perverse glee. This is not a big deal so chill

ommeethatsees

The Team The Team The Team. Who gives a shit about redshirts. The objective is to win games over personal achievements. The fact that many on this board don't understands this baffles me.

Red shirting is important to teams who don't recruit at the top level and need more time to develop talented players (I.e. MSU in the past). It is way less important to teams that recruit at Michigans level. And there is absolutely no indication that Harbaugh won't be able to recruit with the best of them. Put the best team on the field.

Apply that logic to anything else and see if it make sense. 'I have a great job with lots of cash coming in every month, why should I save money?' Even 5 stars get better as they get older. Every RS is an insurance policy to have more experience on your roster down the road. Ever burned RS should be weighed against how much is that 5th year vs what they can contribute now. In Newsome's case, I'm fine with it because the 6th OL is an important position, especially in Harbaugh's offense. If he truly is the best 6th OL, then he needs to play. But what about RJS and Gedeon? You would rather underclass men play a lot of snaps at LB and Buck in the years to come? We're the hand full of snaps they got on special teams their freshman year worth it. The coaches have to think about The Team The Team The Team as well.

ommeethatsees

So I see your logic is to save all your cash and put it in the bank.  A lot of good that will do you if you don't live long enough to enjoy it.  The problem is we aren't talking about life and financial security.  We are talking about fielding the best team and winning football games.  Your insurance policy is Bredeson, Swenson, Onwenu, Hamilton and others. I guess it's a bitch we burned Mason Cole's redshirt too. You play your best players.  In most cases that is not true freshman.  When they are your best players you play them.

Winners field players based on the best talent they've recruited. Losers make their talent available based on the best they think they will be able to recruit.

Don

is based on the premise that the promising player is on the field for only a few snaps during an entire season; a classic example of this is Will Campbell. Including the bowl game, we've got five games left, so we cannot know how much Newsome is going to play. If he sits the rest of the season, then yeah, burning the red shirt seems questionable. If he's the backup and gets substantial snaps, then it doesn't. It's not like our starting OL is some juggernaut that's just mauling people on a consistent basis, so if the staff have concluded that Newsome is good enough to play, it's hardly a stretch to think Newsome will get decent playing time.

Too many of you clowns have never played football. Your best players play, regardless of all the crap thats talked about here.
This site is obsessed about having a full 22 of RS seniors for a title run. In todays CFB you dont need that and thats not how you get top talent. Its not 1994 anymore. Kids are gonna play and contribute as frosh and soph.
Look at MSU, theyre stacked with upperclassman and probably have their worst team in 3 years.

If we did it, then Harbaugh had a reason for it. We're a bit thin on the OL after our starters, so if it needed to happen then so be it. This is why Harbaugh is stockpiling on OL for this incoming class.
