Mike & Mike sounds off on the missed targeting call
October 20th, 2015 at 9:57 AM ^
I also don't want to hear about it. Bad call? Yeah, it's football. Move on.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:01 AM ^
I definitely want to hear about it. I want to hear about it and make Big Ten hear about it till they fix whatever ails their replay officials. I want people to talk about it till Big Ten doesn't screw up anyone else' game/season.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:07 AM ^
It's a terrible rule to begin with, but to look at it on replay and still hold up the call is an embarrassment to the sport.
October 20th, 2015 at 11:12 AM ^
We're playing football. Part of that game is to tackle/hit other players in order to gain possession of the ball.
Now maybe I'm a moron, but isn't EVERY HIT targeting?
October 20th, 2015 at 11:24 AM ^
October 20th, 2015 at 11:44 AM ^
Targeting is sometimes called spearing. It's leading with the crown of your helmet into another player, particularly into the head and neck region.
October 20th, 2015 at 11:54 AM ^
The only spear I have seen this year was the one on Ruddock. Ross didnt spear and hit with the face mask nor did he launch.
Bolden was thrown and his face mask hit the player. Morgan was the closest to a spear and he was the target of the flag.
Frankly I am surprised that the idiot crew didnt call two on that play just because
Spearing and launching was how I understood it as well but it is not. What has changed is that they count anyone catching a pass or attempting to catch a pass as defenseless whether you lead with a crown or not.
What officials look for are what the rulebook calls targeting elements: crouching and hitting with an upward thrust; launching into a player to hit them in the head; contact above the shoulders on a defenseless player; leading with the crown of the helmet.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:04 PM ^
This is a stupid fucking rule that should be abolished post haste.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:37 PM ^
the rule has a completely legitimate purpose, take it from a long-time player who is still coaching. the problem is the ridiculous, illogical, non-sensical fashion it was applied to us on saturday. what makes it even worse was the one the week before they reversed that was called against maryland when we played them. that was a legitimate call. those two decisions can't be reconciled.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:52 PM ^
The rule in and of itself is not stupid - you need to protect defenessless players from getting their heads ripped off. But, the key is the implementation and the review. Sometimes in real speed things can look much more sinister than they really are, hence the entire point of the replay. But when the replay gets that call wrong, I mean.. they need to go to "targeting school"
October 20th, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
Clear helmet to helmet WITH a late hit as well!
Seriously, how bad can the replay officials be when they miss this? We get screwed two weeks in a row on this "rule" that the B1G replay officials cannot get right. WTF???
October 20th, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
wrong team. my bad. excellent gif. 2 separate head shots and 2 separate late hits. of course this should be....reversed.
October 20th, 2015 at 4:20 PM ^
and asking them to clarify how the NW call is not targeting, but the Bolden call is.
For that matter, they should ask how the hell did they completely pick up the flag in the NW game; there were TWO penalties there.
They are either incompetent or they have an agenda, or both.

October 20th, 2015 at 11:23 AM ^
Couldn't agree more.
This is their JOB.
Despite VIDEO REPLAY, and as MUCH TIME as they need, they couldn't get this right???
Unfortunately the game's visual-ending, and subsequent fallout (i.e.spectacle) is getting all the attention, while more important issues (key: that affect future games/playcalling) are going unaddressed.
Nevermind as well, this terribly blown call ruined our starting Senior Captain's last game against MSU. Which he handled with complete class, unlike other players I've seen. These players work so hard and love the game so much, and for 99% it will be their last time ever playing football, and to throw them out of these competitions that they've dedicated themselves, prepared, studied to play in, due to terribly incompetent officiating, is heart-wrecking.
It's preventable. It shouldn't happen again. It can be fixed. I'd like to hear more about it.

no point in arguing. Post deleted.
October 20th, 2015 at 11:06 AM ^
25% of all the targeting calls I've seen in the last two seasons have been BS.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:25 PM ^
It's a shit rule because it's impossible to enforce properly...just like the NHL headshot rules. It's all the more amplified because the teams I root for generally are on the wrong side of the bad calls...in football, I can accept Ross' targeting, but how the NW player got away with hitting Rudock on the head on purpose while Bolden gets thrown out for barely touching Cook and being shoved into him is beyond me. By that same token, my Red Wings have seen Weber literally slam Zettetberg's head into the fucking glass, on purpose, with only a fucking fine.. While Kronwall as a guy with no history lays a borderline hit (was not his cleanest attempt, admittedly), and naturally the NHL feels the need to use THAT hit to set a precedent by suspending him for game 7.
I hate the rules because it's impossible to enforce consistently.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:37 PM ^
Didn't you know that the more people cry about it the greater the chance the B1G will let us replay the last 10 seconds of the game?
October 20th, 2015 at 1:02 PM ^
It's not at all about the sour grapes. It's about trying to make sure it doesn't happen again in future. Not to Michigan. Not to someone else. Well meaning rule enforced in a random manner. That's the problem.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:32 AM ^
It's not like this was your run-of-the-mill bad call in football. The main point of Golic's argument was that a player had to miss half the game because of it, and not just a player, but a captain and a leader of the team. So the refs better make damn sure they get a call like that right, and in this case, they didn't.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:47 AM ^
Then I guess that settles things. In this instance I agree with Golic, it is not only a blown call it was a travesity that a rule like that is in place. A rule that apparently can be called on the whim of an ref. And I say whim because if a ref looks at that play and determines there was intent or malice, then I think you lose credibility as an offical.
So what we have is Bolden getting tossed from a big game cause he got pushed down by an opposing player and landed on the QB. Makes a lot of sense to me.
October 20th, 2015 at 3:30 PM ^
I think we're thinking about this the wrong way. Our next big game we need to pick up a few of the opponent's key defenders and use them like ram rods so that they hit our ball carrier helmet to helmet. Said defenders get tossed.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:12 PM ^
Dear Mr. TennBlue:
I have seen numerous responses from you taking this tenor.
You may not want to hear about it, but what I find fascinating is that you feel somebody else is forcing you to to so, and that you take the time to tell them that the bad call does not merit discussion.
As you should be able to tell from the posts, not all Michigan fans feel as you do, and not all sports fans feel as you do, ergo the discussion on Mike and Mike.
If by some chance it has escaped you, and it evidently has, may I make a suggestion? DON'T CLICK ON A THREAD THAT INVITES DISCUSSION ABOUT THE BAD TARGETING CALL.
In other words, if you want to move on, then do so. If you feel that it is in the others' best interest to follow your lead, you might want want to articulate that a tad better than "I don't want to hear about it."
You also might keep in mind that this forum invites people to discuss Michigan sports, and that call played a significant role in the game in that our leading tackler was prevented from playing in the second half, not to mention the 15 yards.
Attitudes like yours are what kept refereeing in the stone age when replay was available but not used.
If they are going to use replay, is it too much to ask that the replay official either not require eye examination, rules explanations, or institutionalization?
If you do not talk about it, nothing ever changes.
October 20th, 2015 at 12:33 PM ^
All he ever does is either post that .gif of the monkey riding the dog or whatever it is or tell people that they shouldn't be talking about whatever they are talking about.
October 20th, 2015 at 3:34 PM ^
Posting the .gif of the monkey rodeo or telling people they shouldn't be talking about whatever they are talking about actually sounds like two tricks.

October 20th, 2015 at 9:57 AM ^
Why not summarize it?
October 20th, 2015 at 9:59 AM ^
Without even watching. They say it was a bad call, shouldn't have been targeting, talk about how hard it is to call but it's meant to protect players, might need revision in the offseason, but this wasn't the reason we lost the game, not by a longshot.
Did I nail it?
October 20th, 2015 at 10:04 AM ^
Close. Golic wants the rule abolished because it is ridiculous.

Ive always rooted for MSU except when they play Michigan. I can remember being at Dooleys watching the State Kansas Tourney game and the entire bar was rooting for State. The last 7 years have made that impossible. State fans are as vile as OSU fans. And for each fanbase I want nothing but pain and tears. That means Im always looking for State to get crushed by every opponent they play.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:21 AM ^
Had he actually connected with Cook but he didn't. Bolden was horse shit. This is coming from a Buckeye fan.
I have a huge problem with the targeting rule. An OSU player, Cam Williams, was ejected vs PSU and that one was legit. However, I can think of 2 targeting calls, Roby a couple years ago and Smith vs Wisky last year that were horseshit.
Hell I think I saw a targeting call on Saturday, can't remember who, where the player wrapped up the ball carrier and brought him down. But, because he lowered his helmet, WHICH DID NOT HIT THE OTHER PLAYERS HELMET, he was ejected. Just ridiculous. Unless you blatantly helme to helmet someone, a wrap up tackle should never result in targeting.
I also hate when they come back and say the targeting is not upheld, so there fore the hit is legal, but they still uphold the 15 yd penalty. It drives me nuts.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:31 AM ^
Last week when Jake slid and was hit helmet to helmet they not only did not uphold the penalty but did not even issue a late hit penalty, despite a second player hitting Jake afer the play.
Need three educational videos.
HOW TARGETING WORKS, A Primer for officials.
Shane getting hit last ;year (NOT TARGETING),
Jake hit last week (NOT TARGETING)
Bolden getting pulled into the player (TARGETING)

But sometimes the personal foul is directly due to the supposed targeting.
When that is squashed they should kill the penalty too.
October 20th, 2015 at 10:51 AM ^
with the majority of Sparty fans.
More than once, actually, quite a few times, heard Sparty smack talk from a fan who didn't even watch the game. OSU fan base is a bit better than that, they can discuss the actual game.
I asked a Sparty yesterday if they watched the game. The answer? Quote: "No, but we've beaten you what 7 of the last 8"?
You just gotta walk away.
