The Harbaugh effect: A Big Blue boom, all the way down to the parking lots

Washington Post article on trickle-down economics of hiring a great football coach.
Some Maryland fan comments LOL.

So, I check 11W maybe once a month, just to see the Michigan-related threads. There is one about the possibility of Harbaugh's going to Miami next season, which is just simply ludicrous. Granted, some of the people replying to the thread are saying there is no chance that happens, but there are some saying things like, "In two or three years, then yes, there is a high chance."
I just cannot see Jim's leaving this job. Maybe I'm just a homer, but I have a feeling (if he is successful, which I believe everyone thinks he will be) he will coach Michigan for the next fifteen or so years and then retire.

My money is on RCMB. I mean, just look at the "rock bottom" thread and in particular, how many replies and views it has.
That's another site I view maybe once a month; again, just to see the Michigan-related content. I really don't give a fuck about their opinions of their own teams, which is why I don't open any threads that are not related to our teams.

You'd think somewhere in those 500 pages, they'd actually decide where "rock bottom" is...

I love the coverage, but it isn't surprising. WashPo is a national newspaper.
October 8th, 2015 at 12:16 AM ^
And Michigan was just in town vs. Maryland.
October 7th, 2015 at 2:51 PM ^
sports media is going to go Harbaugh-insane to the point of being insuffrable.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
After suffering through the self-destruction years, the media going "Harbaugh-insane" is not going to be anything remotely resembling "insufferable." If Michigan wins the next two games, I think "ecstatic" is going to be a much better description for the aftermath.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:32 PM ^
I mean, I'm already "Harbaugh-insane" and have been for over a year now so the national media is just catching up with us...
October 7th, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
Did you like it better when we made national headlines for playing a concussed quarterback?
I'll take some positive press about our coach and program all day.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:47 PM ^
I seriously don't get this whole aversion to positive publicity. Everytime someone posts a good article on our program, someone's all "MAKE IT STOP!" Why, because we want to exist in obscurity?
If the press is lining up to fawn all over Michigan, that's great.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:52 PM ^
While I don't disagree and am as HARBAUGH hyped as anyone, the media tends to have a certain saturation point. Typically "X" is the absolute best thing ever, there will be huge stories about X, the media becomes oversaturated with "X" and a backlash starts.
The most recent thing I can think of in sports is Tim Tebow. By all accounts Tim's a good guy, was a pretty good college QB (although he won the Heisman thanks to Dixon's injury in 2007) and in no way, shape, or form should have been an NFL QB. The Broncos won in spite of Tebow, not because of him. But HOT DAMN did the media jump all over this white christian dude. To the point of backlash and over exposure.
If you weren't a Michigan fan the saturation point is approaching if not here already.
As a Michigan fan... HARBAUGH!
October 7th, 2015 at 4:10 PM ^
But I am a Michigan fan, so I'm nowhere near the saturation point on Harbaugh coverage. Actually, the fact that non-Michigan fans are fed up of the coverage makes me enjoy it all the more.
October 7th, 2015 at 2:52 PM ^
It bothers me that the media (and fans of other teams) insist on referring to Michigan as "Big Blue," even though that is the semi-official moniker used by Kentucky and its fans. Get off my lawn.
October 7th, 2015 at 2:56 PM ^
You're not the only one, mate. I, too, cannot stand it. I recall seeing an interview with RR during his first spring practice at Michigan and he called Michigan "Big Blue." I cringed...badly.

Burroughs still exists! Focused on ATM services, cash registers, adding machines (what I remembered them for growing up), check processing, etc. Apparently bought out of Unisys in 2010 by PE or hedges, and currently focusing on "cash processing" (ATM, check processing, etc.).
Still based in Plymouth - hopefully with the same brick headquarters and iconic clock and smokestack.

The big computer companies were IBM and the "BUNCH":
- Burroughs
- Univac
- NCR
- Control Data
- Honeywell
That was a long time ago. The BUNCH are all mostly still around in some form, but not much in computers.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:31 PM ^
In this case I assume that "Big" is describing the "Boom" as opposed to "Big Blue".
But maybe that's me reading what I want to be reading.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:49 PM ^
The fact that the headline only capitalizes "Big Blue" suggests otherwise IMO.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:53 PM ^
Like Harbaugh, I'm more of a "fill the glass up all the way" kind of guy.

No comment on your qualitative assessment, but I do agree this isn't an example of "trickle down economics".

Ain't nothing "micro" about Harbaugh.
He's a macro dude. :-)
October 7th, 2015 at 3:04 PM ^
Markovits continued, citing a greeting from a dean at American: “ ‘Andy, great to have you! Welcome. So, Harbaugh: What’s gonna happen?’ ” The person helping with his photo ID: “ ‘So, you’re from Michigan? So, what do you think Harbaugh will do?’ ” The person helping with the parking sticker asked similarly about Harbaugh.
This happens even I have spoken to folks at work, at least those who don't already know me - since the beginning of the year, whenever it comes up that I went to Michigan or I am a fan, the second or third question has been Harbaugh-related, regardless of the fan affiliations of the other person. Nearly everyone definitely has "Harbaugh on the mind", even if they are casual fans.
Great article, OP.
October 7th, 2015 at 3:19 PM ^
Same. Same. I think casual out of state fans of different teams (not OSU/MSU) remember a time when Michigan football was semi-dominant. Folks seem almost nostalgic. The Harbaugh Effect may be reawakening positive memories among non-Michigan fans.

Its IP holding company is domiciled in Livonia, Michigan. It is producing job opportunities in Michigan. Now all we need to do is corner the khaki manufacturing and distribution business and keep it in Michigan. Merely another aspect of Harbaugh-eee-ing economics.
And although I tend not to eat at Cracker Barrel restaurants, I do hereby certify my status as a Wolverine cracker. Next.

UFR. Where art thou?
October 7th, 2015 at 4:14 PM ^
2015 would indeed make a great a case-study in Harbugh-centered externalities.
Here is one related question that I have been thinking about since reading all of the posts here during the weeks of the Shane-Cussion incident and the Brandon E-mail-Gate last fall:
Does Mgoblog see greater user-activity, more clicks and presumably a better advertising-dollar calculus when the team is doing poorly or when the team is doing well. Just curious.
