Open practice reaction thread

Submitted by go16blue on

It won't be over for a few hours still, but I figured I may as well start this thread now. I'm there currently. It's tough to take much from a practice like this, but I can give an impression of the depth chart. Sorry for the disorganization.

Rudock at QB, Smith at RB, Harris/Perry/Chesson at WR (haven't seen much Darboh now that I think of it). Line is as it was reported previously. LBs were solidly Ross/Bolden/Morgan (now wearing #3), and CBs saw a lot of LewisClark (thanks Qmatic), Stribling, and a couple others. Hill and Wilson played with the 1s at S, and of course Jabril played every snap. Butt obviously started at TE. Isaac was first off the bench at RB, Morris at QB. I'll try to update with further impressions as possible. I'd love to see other attendees corroborate the above, and add more details. They came down on phones pretty hard so this is all from memory.

There really are people who still believe in this BS?  The team doesn't know "how to win"?

I mean, they might finish 7-5 because they don't not know how to form tackle, they don't know how to cut on a curl route, they can't reach block,  they can't turn their hips on a sluggo.   But I thought most people have arrived at a point where they understand attributes like "grit" and "heart" and "he just knows how to win games" are just sportswriter drivel narrative.

I bet NHL trade deadline week just drives you crazy, huh?

That said though, against PSU two years ago when a certain freshman UM defensive back had as bad a drive as you'll see at the end of regulation, the "how to win" narrative may have been appropriate.

Also, I think the new "darker" maize looks bad in the Big House...

I'll probably get negged for this, but personal opinions on which shade is better aside, the jerseys do not match the Block M on the field or the end zone letters AT ALL. It's not a good look. I don't really care which they stick with long term, but they need to match.

Also, the jersey maize does not match our cheer or dance teams. Or the band's t-shirts. Everything was "lighter" maize except the jerseys.

I don't mind the plain white away uniforms.  The home uniforms will be simplified jerseys, but we will work toward the traditional maize (orange-yellow) color with Nike.

Of course, if Brandon were still here, he might be tempted to have a special uniform with Khaki uniform-pants and blue jerseys with some medaliion to commemorate something like the 4 for Coach Harbaugh's old uniform.

The small M is less bravado and hubris.  Also the white away uniforms are retro simple football.  Less flash and more classic style.  They remind me of Penn State or the old San Diego Chargers uniforms.

I like the small M Sweatshirt (even have one order from MDen).  If anything else, don't give Dantonio any motivation to justify the chip on his shoulder.  Be humble, dress classically, and improve everyday until you can carry the Ax home.

He didn't play in the scrimmage as far as I remember, so don't think he's pushing those two. Rudock was well separated from the pack and the only guy to move the offensive consistently at all. Obviously, he had the most talent surrounding him, but definitely the best.

This is a lot of speculation on my part, but Drake Johnson could be that guy on offense (if he can stay healthy). It doesn't sound like anyone is separating at RB yet, disappointing with two 5 stars. The door may be wide open for Drake when he's ready. Hope he still has that explosive burst.

He dominated the State Championship game his Jr year against Big Ten caliber secondary recruits. “Drake is a smooth kid who has always been able to go up and win jump balls,” Scout.com Midwest Regional Manager Allen Trieu said. “I went back recently and watched some of the high school championship game he played in as a junior I think people forget how good he was in that game and he did that against double coverage with two future Big Ten guys in the opposing secondary. " "Having been more of a basketball player early on, he has just started to focus on football and injuries hampered some of that development. I think as long as his game has been refined and he has gotten stronger from high school, I see no reason he shouldn't be able to contribute because he has top-flight athleticism and some of the best ball skills I had seen.” http://www.scout.com/college/michigan/story/1576621-michigan-camp-buzz-…

yea seriously people need to stop posting his highlights if you don't know who he actually played against..

Awesome Division 3 footage..  a 6'4'' WR going up to catch a bunch of jump balls against scrubs

Offensively, it may be Harris, it may not be.

Defensively though, I like what Wormley and Charlton bring as pass rushers from the middle and edge.  That's part of the reason why I soured so badly on the previous coaching staff, their defensive line rotations made little sense to me at times.

Attenndance- clicker usher at gate said about 700 students when asked at exiting  so maybe 1000 w/ band,  cheerleaders, ushers. Goalposts are not maize but definitely hi-vis yellow. During Oklahoma drill Harbaugh was up and down the shoots running the drill --very hands on--all whistle no clapping. Ist string O-line Lto R--Cole Dawson Glasgow Kalis Bars for scrimmage. Order of backs appearing  1-Smith , 2-Isaac, 3-Green (Johnson did drills but no scrimmage) First group of wide receivers did include Grant Perry and Drake Harris, Butt is THE man at TE. Kickers looked ok Seychel(??) and Allen both made and missed some from 36  but both made 55 yarders. Ist TD ruddock to Perry, 2nd Td ruddock to Butt , 3rd Td ruddock to Hill. As others have stated cellphones were NOT to be used (even Harbaugh made a garbled message about it ) so my info was jotted down on a receipt in my pocket but tried to be as accurate as possible . Concentrated on offense so no defensive notes. Sorry. Ruddock definitely had most time under center and after him Speight impressed me over Morris. Also weather was perfect. When done all the players , coaches  and staff came to the corner of the endzone and sang the Victors with the band and students--nice touch. Ruddock had two good scrambles , cant remember any for Morris or Speight.
