Why is Charles Woodson's jersey not retired?

If you win the Heisman, you're instantly in the top 3 players ever to play at Michigan (in my opinion).

The only thing I can think of is that he didn't play for 4 years. Didn't Howard leave his Junior year? I can't remember and can't find anything about it, except that he earned his degree after he left.

It also bothers me that 1 isn't retired for Anthony Carter. I understand WHY they don't do that since we've had some other GREAT players that wore number 1 (Derrick Alexander is probably the most underrated Michigan receiver in history - at least in terms of current recogniation). But, this is a distant second to my confusion and dismay over number 2 not being retired.

If someone knows the answer to this, I'd love to hear it.

If he really hasn't finished his degree... A. Hope he does whenever he does hang em up and B. That shouldn't matter at all. The guy did great things for Michigan on the field and continues to do them with Mott.

As I said yesterday I don't like the retired numbers in football. Would prefer honoring it and issuing all the retired numbers. Only sports where it feels sorta sacred is hockey and basketball (maybe it's because the banners hang in the rafters)

Uummmm, they both fucking suck. Try Big L, Blackstar, early Nas, The Lox, Talib Kwali, Gangstar, Early Outkast, Alchemist, The Roots, Tribe, Wu Tang, early Common, early Jay Z, Binary Star, DJ Premier, Scarface, Beanie Siegal, Brother Ali, Atmosphere, Rhymefest, the list goes on and on. Drake isnt hard, doesnt have intelligent lyrics. Hes fake as they come, soft as they come. He's horrible.

Get on my level and get off my lawn!

I think I heard on WTKA this morning that they will be retiring Woodson's #2 along with re-retiring all of the other numbers during the Ohio game this year.

Personally I feel #1 and #2 shouldn't be retired.  I love seeing players get rewarded with the historic numbers for WR and DB.  I'd actually prefer only 48 and 98 retired.

Practically they're probably just waiting untill Woodson is retired and can make it to a game to have a deservedly enormous ceremony.

Before Rich Rod screwed up the prestige around the #1 jersey I always loved giving it to our stud receiver and I think it would really cool to use the #2 in the same way on defense.

No it shouldn't.  It was great coming to opening game last year and seeing the #1 back on the field.

Seeing players wearing #1, 2, 21, 77, 98 reminds everyone of the great things accomplished by the players in the past and connects the current players to the incredible legacy that is Michigan Football.

Until the numbers came out of retirement, how many people remembered the numbers that had been retired at Michigan outside of Harmon and Ford?  But when the numbers are in circulation, those former players are much better recognized.

The Legends numbers program wasn't administered well, but the concept has merit and should have been tweaked, not killed.

I'm not a fan of retiring any numbers. I think the players that wore the uniform and were great should be honored in some way, but not retiring numbers. Put them in the University Hall of Fame, build a statue somewhere on the grounds, etc...

If he's not hurt in 1991, two things probably happen.

#1 - Desmond does not win the Heisman.
#2 - We have another outside threat to stay in the FSU game and Rose Bowl beyond the first half.

Of all our wide receivers, he had arguably the best pro career.

In both the FSU game and UW game, we did not have a competent WR opposite Desmond.  So teams could focus on him because our other threats were too slow.  I'm not saying we win either game.  But I am saying that we probably stick the ball in the end zone or hold onto the ball longer with another All-American out there on the field.

I would prefer the #21, #1, #2....not be 'retired.' I just think those numbers need to be in circulation. Honestly, just put the patch on there and keep them in circulation. Put a statue up of Desmond, Charles, and AC....Those numbers are too popular to take out imo.

The number 1 jersey should never be retired. Its tradition for the best wide receiver. Desmond Howard's 21 was messing up that tradition the last couple years. Hell Braylon Edwards did the most damage with him wanting to help pick who gets to wear it over the last decade and a half.

I've asked him about this and he said he doesn't want his number retired. He wants his number representing Michigan on the field every Saturday for eternity. He also legitimately hates David Boston to this day. :)

Yeah football just doesn't have many numbers so a ring of honor is good thing to have. And to make some numbers special like number 1 for WR & DB should get number 2 which no one has gotten to wear it since Charles Woodson.
