OT Victor Martinez to DL
Doesn't seem like this board is overly excited about the Tigers, so sorry for another baseball thread.
Victor was placed on the DL today. They're calling it the 15 day, but it sounds like 60 day may be in play. He rushed back and since he aggravated it vs Chicago (I think), he's been bad.
Sad to say it but this will help the Tigers (possibly a lot) in the short run. Hopefully he comes back strong. He was #2 in MVP voting last year.
The Tigers need a new trainer, not that it matters. The window on Detroit's title chances has closed.
Yes, or message their injury updates better. In media reports they sound like they have no idea what they are doing or are using 1950's-style sports medicine.

40 games in, they have a +12 run differential, are six games over .500, and a half-game up on the Twins. They are behind a hot-starting Royals team with a +58 that went to the World Series last year.
Don't let that whatever-and-0 start fool you. The data so far are a long way from clear. I don't think I'd bet on them making the playoffs right now.
In related news, Anibel Sanchez forgot how to pitch.
For me, his performance to date is the biggest dissapointment.
just gave up back to back to back homers. Wow. He's already given up 2x as many homers as he did all of last year.
No you didn't. You knew right away it was Victor Martinez.
I eventually figured out it had something to do with baseball, because I was pretty sure we didn't have an O-lineman named Victor Martinez.
I just saw a headline referring to the Securities & Exchange commission and thought it was about ESPN's favorite conference. We need more letters in our alphabet.

This team is frustratingly inconsistent. They take 2 of 3 from St. Louis and look pretty darn good then they do...this

just seems out-of-sync for the Tigers more often than not this season, and a lot of that seems to be Martinez-related, as neither Victor nor JD has hit anywhere near the clip they did last season.
I'm not as worried about those two individuals as much, though as I'm worried about the complete lack of depth on this team---the Tigers have no bench to speak of. Hernan Perez has no more business being on the roster than I do, yet Ausmus allows him to bat and kill potential rallies on a fairly frequent basis. Romine, Holaday and the odd-man out each day in the outfield (usually either Gose or Davis) are OK but more valuable as defensive subs or pinch-runners than pinch-hitters---none of them has a lick of power. And now we see Tyler Collins (who has never impressed me) being brought up (instead of Stephen Moya) from the minors as a replacement for V-Mart? As much as anything else, that shows how devoid of MLB-ready talent the Tiger farm system is.
I hope Collins proves me wrong, but what the Tigers really need is someone that can provide some offense that makes a difference, someone who can occasionally jack one out but also can hit some up the huge gaps in the spacious Comerica outfield. DD better be working the phones looking for a stick, even if it's just a one-year rental---more and more, it's looking to me like the window of opportunity for bringing a title home expires this season.
I hear ya regarding the offense. Might as well throw Castellanos in there too as a guy who seems to be underperforming.
help the tigers out? we can't hit our way out of a paper bag most of the last 5 weeks. after a 9-1 start, we've underachieved in epic fashion.
I totally clicked on this thinking that there was some freshman offensive lineman switching to the D-line.
However, as a non-Tigers fan, I am very pleased you labeled this OT.
wheelchair to Victor Martinez.
Other than Sanchez, the starting pitching hasn't been too bad. Green and Simon have had a few hiccups but overall ok. Lobstein has been respectable holding down the fort.
Once they've figured out Alburqurque and Chamberlin are nothing more than inning eaters and not to be used in close games, the bullpen has been ok. Hopefully Rondon can help bolster that area too.
I haven't been impressed by their offense. On paper it should be one of the better in baseball but their not clicking for the most part and now V-mart will be absent for a while.
I feel like they have potential and possibly go deep into the playoffs. But they will have to have a lot go right for them. They need everyone to be healthy. They're not deep enough to overcome one or two key player losses. Green and Simon have to hold up throughout the season. That batting lineup has to get hot. If they can manage to do these things, I like their chances.
Also, can this team stop striking out and hitting into double plays? They are killing rally's.
