Smart Football on Brian Kelly
http://smartfootball.com/grab-bag/thoughts-on-brian-kelly-as-notre-dame…
Raises the key question (and one that Michigan has quasi-grappled with*):
"Which brings us to probably the scariest similarity with Weis: Kelly needs to find a good defensive coordinator, and I’m not sure who that will be."
*Quasi because numbers/experience clearly played a key role.

if you average 40 pts a game and are #1 in passing.

Just Guessing.

What if you win your first game 480-0 but lose all your others by a score of 0-43?
Ok yes it's unrealistic, but BOOM MATH'D
(edit: Ok fine, here. 63-39 win first game, 38-39 lose last 11 games)

it was only a guess.

What about Jon Tenuta? Wasn't he supposed to be Charlie's other half? (Or in this case, "Other tenth?")
And now, for my second point - I'm sick and tired of Brian Kelly already.

Another half to Weis? Yikes...
*Insert obligatory fat joke here*
December 11th, 2009 at 12:04 PM ^
Thats why I said "other tenth."
You see:
Charlie: 1800lbs
Tenuta: 200lbs
Total: 2000lbs of Charluta, 1/10th of which is contributed by Jon Tenuta.

There is waaaaay too much math in this thread.

we MGoBloggers go off on a tangent fairly often.

I do seem to remember some U of M fans foaming at the mouth when it was rumored that Tenuta would be joining the staff in AA IF Miles was the guy.

Eh, Tenuta's D are pretty high risk, high reward due to his aggressive playcalling and blitzing. Didn't work out too well for ND's defense as they got torched all season long. I was never sold on the guy.

Tenuta is a good defensive coordinator. Just like any DC, he needs time to install his system. And while Notre Dame has done great at pulling in offensive recruits in the past few years, the defensive recruiting hasn't been great.
December 11th, 2009 at 11:57 AM ^
And how long until his sytem is installed?
December 11th, 2009 at 12:17 PM ^
I'm thinking that both Gerg And Rich Rod have about 9 months to complete Installation of All Systemzz--
And they'd better get it right, no?

I'd be shocked if they were let go. But that's niether here nor there, we aren't going to suffer a complete meltdown...
December 11th, 2009 at 12:18 PM ^
Yes he is, and next year is the answer!
December 11th, 2009 at 1:49 PM ^
I remember the line on GERG being that he makes a good defense with good talent and a bad defense with bad/inexperienced talent. So... I don't think that qualifies him for great. It's probably a bad idea to switch right now though.

This year ND has recruited (according to Rivals) equal numbers on the Offensive and Defensive side of the ball.
9 offense / 9 defense.
2009: they recruited only 5 defensive players (4 linebackers).
13 offense / 5 defense.
2008: 10 defensive recruits, including another 4 linebackers.
13 offense / 10 defense.
2007: Another very weak defensive recruiting class.
13 offense / 5 defense.
I had never actually looked at the numbers before but it's pretty easy to see that Charlie neglected the defense at a pretty alarming rate. I can not see their defense getting any better (except the linebackers) until they start recruiting that side of the ball with more regularity.

Bo Pelini wasted little time turning the Nebraska defense around. It shouldn't take long for Gerg to install his system if indeed he is a great defensive mind. I have faith.
December 11th, 2009 at 12:50 PM ^
I have very little, at least with the rest of the staff he has around him.
December 11th, 2009 at 12:32 PM ^
It's easier to turn a defense around when you have a bad azz space eater in the middle. Let's hope Martin and/or Campbell can be our "Suh" next year.
