M Lacrosse beats Bellarmine 16-9(!) in season opener

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

At Oosterbaan Field House, Michigan Lacrosse which is in its 4th season as a program, trailed 7-5 at halftime.

That was about it for Bellarmine. Halftime adjustments? Uh, yeah.

Michigan came out and scored 5 unanswered to take a 10-7 lead, and eventually went on a long scoring run.

Two Wolverines had hat tricks today. Mikie Schlosser and David McCormack both had 4 goals apiece.

Keep in mind, Bellarmine was a team Michigan beat last year in OT for their lone ECAC win. Seeing this result against them is very encouraging.

This is the first win in program history for Michigan in a season opener.

Next up for M Lax is in-state rival Detroit. The two played a CLASSIC last season at Pontiac'c Ultimate Soccer Arena where Michigan won 14-13 in OT in what was essentially a road game.

Michigan takes on Detroit next Saturday at 1pm inside Oosterbaan Field House.

Should be a very interesting season. See between 6-8 games that should be wins or a toss up Michigan should be in contention to keep the game close and how knows they could steal a win or two.

Still a few years away from competing against the big boys but definitely become a decent middle of the pack team.

This was a big win for this team. Great job pulling away in the second half and winning the 3rd quarter. Scoring from quite a few different guys and a nice improvement over last year. I'm excited for the UDM game next week. Taking my wife on Valentine's day. And what a huge win for them today too, beating Ohio state. This might be a pretty evenly matched game next week.

Our son played freshman year in St Louis and then for a tremendous team in D2 in Texas, Hillcrest high from Dallas. Won state championship his first year here. Love the sport but have a hard time visualizing indoors! The joy of warm winters here in TX. Not quite the level of play across the board down here as the East Coast but some really talented players down here. I hope the coaches are attending camps down here and reviewing tapes from TX kids! The kids we knew are very education focused too. A big plus for UM

I was there in person, and a few things stood out:

1. McCormack is a force. Four goals, with a nice mix of dodges and finishes on the crease.

2. Kyle Jackson didn't have a huge game, but he had a really good goal. I couldn't see very well as I was on the other end, but it looked like he caught the ball on the crease with his back turned (over the shoulder), then turned and scored. He also had a good dodging goal as well after a half box fake

3. Logan settled down in net and then stood on his head for a few. Wasn't challenged much in the second

4. Faceoffs were once again dominated by Michigan. The wings looked better this year. Lott won nearly every clamp, still needs to work on controlling the ball. BU was bad last year and will be bad again, so caveat applied

5. BU just didn't have the horses to stay even in the second half. There were some back-breaking runs after the first half was largely even. I should note that UM hit FIVE pipes in the first ten minutes. A few more of those fall and this wouldn't have been close the whole way through

Michigan looks to be moving up another tier. They have to this year, with the Big Ten schedule they have to play. I think 5-6 wins may be might still be where my expectations are, even with the improvement I saw today.

Michigan lax should be able to step up to a new level of play this year, given the recruiting curve of the last few years.  The roster is finally looking like a real D1 roster.  Michigan had the IL #19 recruiting class this year, reeling in a few top 100 recruits.  Still quite a distance from the tourney - B1G having a lax conference has probably pushed that eventuality off by a few years, as it would likely take an at-large bid until OSU, PSU, Rutgers and Michigan can challenge Hopkins and Maryland regularly.  But the tradeoff will be worth it, as recruiting will definitely turn up a notch getting to play in the mid-Atlantic lax hotbeds every year.  Should be exciting, and I just can't wait for Hopkins to come to town! (it has been a smart move by Coach Paul to play Hopkins in Baltimore for the last three years - M needed the exposure.)

JP and the staff have done a great job recruiting.  We are starting to pull guys who got offers from the big boys - UVA, Duke, Syracuse, etc - in future classes. The best kids are getting recruited in 8th and 9th grade by the best teams.  Doing the math, kids who were in 9th grade when Michigan went D1 are graduating this year. I believe next year will be the first year when Michigan has no guys left from the club team and a full roster of D1 recruits (maybe that's this year already).

Very much agree that making the tournament is a few years off at best (see math above) but making the B1G tournament this year, and beating Ohio State, are not out of the realm of possibilities.

Great to see lacrosse threads on MGoBlog!

Good win- Bellarmine is turning into a legit program and they were actually kinda good the last two seasons.

Maybe this team is finally turning the corner .  They have a ton of home games this year so they need to get out to a hot start...

In defeating Bellarmine by a score of 16-9 this past Saturday, Team 4 of Michigan men’s lacrosse won the season opener for the first time and signaled hope of a much improved squad this season.  The Wolverines defeated Bellarmine last year 11-10, but finished the season at 5-11 ranked #39 nationally while the Knights went 7-5 and finished ranked #34.  While there is still basically the entire season to play, this early strong performance shows the possibility of the Wolverines fielding a top-25 team in 2015, the inaugural season of B1G lacrosse.

Next Game: Saturday 2/14 vs. University of Detroit Titans.  Detroit earned an upset win over Ohio State in their season opener.  The Titans finished last season at 6-8 ranked #58 nationally, the Buckeyes finished at 6-8 and ranked #24. The Wolverines will face a confident Detroit team, and will need to continue to work hard to extend their win streak after last season’s 14-13 overtime win against the Titans.  Michigan is 1-1 against Detroit all-time.  Detroit carries a chip on its shoulder and circles the Michigan game each year eager to prove a point – their rise to varsity preceded Michigan’s and went largely unnoticed while the Wolverine’s leap to D1 was heralded nationwide as the biggest development in college lacrosse since Notre Dame went varsity in 1981.  The game will be at Oosterbaan at 7pm so come out and support if you’re in Ann Arbor.

The Buckeyes come to Ann Arbor on April 12 in a game at the Big House that will be televised on ESPNU.
