Report: The Dumbest Fanbases...
Fox Sports has taken the time to provide us with an in depth analysis of the dumbest fan bases in American sports.
1. Alabama
2. Kentucky
3. The Ohio State University
4. Arkansas
5. Notre Dame
My personal favorite line: "Ohio State is the most SEC-like fanbase in the country that's not actually in the SEC."

I'd rank our own fanbase fairly high. To be honest, the thing I dislike the most about michigan is its fanbase. I know I'm not the only Michigan alumnus that feels this way.

I hate anyone that acts like an uneducated idiot and/or lets college athletics seriously affect their lives to the point that they cannot respect that sports are games.
That goes for fellow alumni and non-alumni.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:12 PM ^
That thinks they are better than non alums .
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:20 PM ^
Agreed.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:15 PM ^
with a Sparty who was completely irrational about UM. He literally hates Michigan.
I'm thinking"Why? It's sports". Nothing more.
Too many people attaching their self-worth to the college they attended. It's like a micro version of nationalism. Irrational..nay, zealous, pride in their school. It's really, really, weird.
Be proud of your accomplishment and that of your school, but it should never define who you are.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:28 PM ^
I agree - but to me it is weirdest when that irrationaly guy didn't even attend whatever school he went to. Now, he's poorly representing an institution that he doesn't have an association with. Accordingly, people with actual associations to that school have their reputation suffer.
It happens in all fan bases.
Look at OSU. Everyone likes to make fun of them and whatnot, but I've had the chance to go to Columbus for a bunch of stuff and have even made some friends down there. People at the school are great, respectful, intelligent and nice. However, idiots in their fanbase hurt their reputation.
And if you are not actually tied to the university, you're less likely to care about how you're affecting that University's reputation (and the reputation of anyone that has OSU on their resume).
So, my stance would be: I love all fans of Michigan (alum or otherwise) that are respectful humans. I hate all fans of Michigan (alums or otherwise) that are not respectful of other schools, teams, people. That simple.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:52 PM ^
All due respect, my friend, but who cares what these jerks have to say? Michigan's reputation has been sullied as much by it's "arrogant alumni" as by obnoxious Walverines. But that has not made one iota of a difference in how UM is perceived as an academic institution.Michigan is too big and outstanding of a place for it's name to be blackened or besmirched by juvenile comments made by fans of it's football program.
Michigan is resented because of perceived arrogance more so than the dumb hicks who make stupid comments about MSU's academics. The reason MSU fans hate Michigan so much is because of UM's alums, not the Walverines. Walverines are easily dismissed because as you point out they have no real connection to the school. But alums are extension of the school and how they act or speak DOES carry weight.
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:05 PM ^
"The reason MSU fans hate Michigan so much is because of UM's alums, not the Walverines. "
That statement is patently false.
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:14 PM ^
Talk to MSU fans/alums and you'll find the arrogance of Michigan to be the greatest source of their irritation.
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:38 PM ^
That might be true for Ohio State fans but not MSU ones. Their go-to insult is "Walverine" or "Walvie."
January 3rd, 2015 at 11:02 PM ^
but from my experience MSU fans have a major inferiority complex and a lot of that is due to UM being proud of their academic and athletic excellence.
I grew up with some of these idiots and just got into it with one on another site. It's astounding how envious and thinskinned Spartans are.
Ironically, an uncle of mine, who is a MSU fans(but who didn't attend the school) sent disparaging emails about UM to me and my father last year. He hates UM.
January 4th, 2015 at 11:31 AM ^
Well, I realize I can speak only from my own experience, but I'm a UM alumnus, and I've found most MSU fans and alumni despise all of the Walmart Wolverines and seem to have no problem with actual UM students and alumni.
January 4th, 2015 at 4:30 PM ^
Your experience mirrors mine.
January 4th, 2015 at 11:30 PM ^
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:06 PM ^
Now this is getting ridiculous. In back to back sentences you say that "arrogant alumni" have sullied UM's reputation and then say that UM is too big and outstanding a place for its name to be blackened by fans of football program.
Which is it?
Michigan is resented? Ok. Don't fucking care. Like you said, Michigan isn't hurting because of this imaginary resentment. Is it arrogant of me to say that?
I now live in Ann Arbor, 4 years after graduating. I came to UM from the rural nowhere of Michigan. All my friends, people I work with that went to UM are great people. None are arrogant about going to UM because we all realize that great higher education is about what you do with it. Some of the most impressive people I know and work with went to other schools. I don't think less of them for that. I do think less of people that make blanket statements like "Michigan students are arrogant assholes."
Michigan has the largest alumni base in the world. The world. There are obviously going to be idiots in there. They may be well-educated idiots, but idiots, nonetheless. The vast majority of the alum base does great things in society. Let's stop painting with a broad brush by using terms like "arrogant assholes" and "walverines."
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:11 PM ^
Obviously, UM alums and students are not all the same. I explicitly used qualifiers.
January 4th, 2015 at 11:19 PM ^
We're not arrogant... we're just better.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:07 PM ^
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:09 PM ^
Are you insinuating something?
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:11 PM ^
Yes.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:13 PM ^
As an alumnus myself I don't find anything wrong with people who grew up around Michigan to be Michigan fans.
I do hate bandwagon fans though... ie all the random Sparty fans that suddenly sprouted out of nowhere in the past 6 years.
smh

College education does not preclude one from being evil, stupid, or irrational.
The adminstrative branch of the SS(RSHA) was populated with college graduates with fully one-third having Ph.D's. Mao was college educated as was Joseph Goebbels(four degrees in fact) and Lenin. Many of the Americans who have ran our empire have been college-educated.
Education only provides you with knowledge. What you do with that depends on you. The quality of a person is best measured by how they treat others, not by the names on their degrees(if they even have one) or how much money they possess.
You have managed to be arrogantly ignorant. That is a remarkable feat. I have to congratulate you on this rather unique achievement.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:33 PM ^
You seem very invested in this topic.
Quite the rant...
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:55 PM ^
With all due respect your post was an incoherent rant. If that's what you call thinking I want no part of it.
However, I have to give you props for managing to bring up Mao Zedong, Stalin, and Nazi Germany in a post about dumb fanbases. Quite the feat.
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:03 PM ^
Based on your posts I'd say you were on some sort of laxative for all that keeps coming out of your mind is shit.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:41 PM ^
The quality of the person is best measured by how they treat others? This is rich from the guy who does nothing but criticize posts and other members of this blog.

who generally contributes nothing to everything.

Look, I don't mean to be an ass - but there's a small difference with SOME non-alum fans. Not all. SOME,
Everyone (99%) on this site is an awesome fan I am proud to be in a community with, whether they are alums or not.
However, we've all run into fans in our lives who have no other connection to the University that say or do things that are embarrassing. To me, this comes from the misguided notion that other schools are inherently lesser or don't derserve respect for some reason. Of course, at times we all joke about this. However, when I'm out and wearing M gear and someone comes up to me and starts telling me how much MSU sucks at life and they are pathetic and Dantonio is [insert inflammatory name], I shake my head and think "what the fuck is wrong with you?"
Plus, some fans are fans of only the football team and, in a way, that's disappointing because the University and Ann Arbor, to me, are so amazing that I feel like some people are totally missing out on what is truly great about UM.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:43 PM ^
fucking assholes.Do you really think Dave Brandon is a rare speciman? My dad spent 25 years delivering packages in Ann Arbor and he was all too often treated like shit by UM students and grads. This for a guy who actually went to UMAA for year before having to drop out to raise me, was a bitter pill to swallow.
Too many people who have gone to UM think they are special because they went there. Uh, excuse me, no. Michigan is a great school, but that doesn't make it's graduates great. Greatness comes from what YOU achieve, not what others did. Jim Harbaugh is great because of what he accomplished on the field of play and not simply because he played for Michigan.
Yeah, Walverines are embarrassments. So too are many UM alums. This goes for all fanbases.Assholes are assholes regardless of who they cheer for.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:50 PM ^
We all know this.
The point is, the UM alum asshole is fairly tarnishing the UM reputation whereas the non-alum asshole that purports to be a fan of the university but degrades it's reputation with his/her actions is unfairly tarnishing the UM reputation.
And, sorry, graduating from UM is a great and special accomplishment. It was the hardest thing I ever did, the hardest I have ever worked. I'm even more proud that I did it myself, with little financial help. That is great and that is special. And Michigan is immensely special to me because of all those connections I made.
Furthermore, because of that great education I received and earned, I can recognize that people attending other great universities can say the same thing. People doing other great work in life outside of academia can say the same things. People serving our country are doing a great and special thing.
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:16 PM ^
I don't think it is. Millions have graduated from UM. That alone does not make it special.
Special to me is going to the Moon or writing an speech that defines a war or inspires millions to take up the cause of Civil Rights. THAT is special.
Raoul Wallenberg was special not because he graduated from UM, but because he saved tens of thousands of people from being killed.
What is special for you individually is not special for society. I am not saying that you should not be proud. I am not diminishing your personal achievement.

we non-alumni muggle types apologize for dumbing down your fanbase.
January 3rd, 2015 at 10:46 PM ^
After all the fucking whining about he said/she said and who did what to whom on Twitter and the interwebs during the coaching search, I whole heartedly agree with you. The fact you have -13 (at the time of this writing) proves your point exactly.
January 3rd, 2015 at 9:07 PM ^
I think you're using the word "report" rather loosely here.
