Bellomy over Morris?

Submitted by imdwalrus on
This has been bothering me since last night... ESPN said repeatedly in the broadcast that they'd been told by the coaching staff that Morris was ready to go and would back up Gardner if need be. He didn't. Morris never saw the field and Bellomy went in instead. This wouldn't have bothered me if ESPN hadn't made it crystal clear they were expecting Morris to go in. They almost seemed surprised he didn't. All I want to know is, what happened? Yet another injury? Did they lie about his status? Missing helmet? Given how Bellomy had played previously and did play last night, I can't imagine they thought he'd be more likely to contribute than Morris...

You can thank the media for Bellomy playing over Morris. The way they crucified our program for putting him back in last week, there was no way they we're putting him in and risking him getting hit in the head again.

I'm guessing that "cleared to play" for Morris doesn't mean "100% healthy".  He's probably still hurt, he's just not so hurt that he absolutely cannot play.

Which probably once again indicates he should have come out of that Minnesota game earlier strictly for the ankle injury, especially given his utter ineffectiveness and the score.   But that is another discussion.

While I know that Hoke loves nothing more than to stonewall and lie to the press, it might engender him some goodwill to try and give them the truth every once in a while.

I noticed yesterday in the pre game that Morris attempted far fewer throws than any other QB including Speight. The QBs came out and warmed up throwing short to long passes and then started throwing routes to receivers as coaches flipped them the ball. Morris did not participate in either of these drills until well after the other QBs were nearly done. Instead he stood off to the side and just watched. He did get some throws in when the receivers came out but not many and mostly after Speight and Cleary were about done. My guess is the coaches had already decided Morris was not going to go unless absolutely necessary.
