Hoops recruiting: U-M no longer pursuing Jalen Coleman

Submitted by Raoul on

On today's recruiting roundup, Sam Webb said that in his opinion, Michigan is "pretty much done" with 2015 recruiting following Duncan Robinson's decision to transfer to U-M. He said that he didn't think Michigan would be mentioned in connection with Jalen Coleman or Eric Davis for much longer. This is looking like a good call, with this news from Kyle Bogenschutz:

Following commit of transfer Duncan Robinson, #Michigan no longer pursuing 2015 La Lumiere 4-star SG Jalen Coleman http://t.co/CwqznDJVbo

Sam said that he thinks that for Michigan 2015 recruiting now boils down to possible big-time "difference makers," such as Caleb Swanigan or P. J. Dozier. Other than that, it's on to 2016.

Is ND bound most likely. Very disappointed we didn't get this kid. He is a flat out player. With that said if we can hit 16 and get Thorton Leaf Towns to go along with Teske. Plug whatever wing you want with that crew and we will be thinking final four. Not in the least point disappointed with Eric Davis. I hope he goes elsewhere. I compare that recruitment with Valentine. I was hoping so hard Valentine picked state. Just didn't think we needed him. Same goes for Davis.

I believe Dozier is scheduled for a visit sometime in late September, if I remember the known schedule from UMHoops correctly. Also in the same article, Dylan mentioned that Dozier's top five where Michigan, Louisville, North Carolina, Georgetown and South Carolina. Rivals actually considers him somewhat underranked in their own evaluation - from their piece via UMHoops:

“A tall and skilled guard, Dozier looks to be pretty close to 100 percent with the rehab of his surgically repaired knee. He found great confidence in July as both a playmaker and scorer. Given the tools and skill he has to go with his size, he is currently under-ranked.”

The kid had his chance. Coleman was supposed to be a Michigan lean ever since last year. Yet he kept dragging it out. Oh well. The moral of the story is you need to commit when offered. You snooze you lose. I think Robinson will be just as good if not better so I am not at all worried. Adios Jalen (named after Jalen Rose) Coleman...

especially with what Yeezus posted above.  I could be wrong of course, but it appears the coaches started to bail on a lot of the big targets in the 2015 class a while back.  That may explain the late additions to the 2014 class and intense recruiting effort paid to what appears to be a loaded 2016 class.  Robinson looks like a very good alternative to Coleman, though obviously not as athletic.  Hopefully, they can pull in at least one of the guys mentioned in the article though.

So far, 2015 basketball recruiting has been a huge disappointment. We haven't landed a single elite recruit despite pursuing and offering several. Unless we land one of the top 50 guards we've offered, it will be a failure. Given Michigan's unparalleled success in grooming guards for the NBA in the past several years and elite results on the court, it's shocking. That being said, Robinson is a very promising transfer. Also, there is still plenty of time left in 2015 recruiting. And Beiliein is the absolute best at both finding underrated recruits and turning them into champions.

I find it odd too that Beilein can't land the 5 star kids considering his track record of winning and NBA players. Yes, yes I know we aren't Kentucky, and Beilein doesn't want one and dones. But it's still shocking that top 100 guys don't find Michigan appealing enough to commit.

By all accounts, Beilein is a great guy and a great coach to play for. He shows real dedication to his players - as shown by being the last one in the green room waiting for Morgan to get picked. And his results in terms of player development and on the court success are the best in the country. Yet he struggles to land elite recruits. The team that made the Championship game had only one player who was ranked in the top 50 when he committed to Michigan (McGary). Since then, he did land two top 50 recruits in the 2013 class and it looked like he was finally recruiting at an elite level. But in 2014, he whiffed on about 9 elite recruits before landing Chatman. Ironically, Chatman was better ranked than many of their previous top targets. This year, he's pursued multiple top 50 guards including Kennard, Grandstaff, Coleman, Brunson, Davis, Dozier and Ali without success so far. He's such an amazing talent evaluator that it may not matter. And I don't fault Beilein. He cobbles together great teams without the highest rated recruiting classes. But you have to wonder about the judgement of players turning down a chance to play for Beilein. I would think that any of the above guards would leap at a chance to play for him.

These are fair statements.  It is disappointing to me as well - coach B deserves to have landed a few of the first choice guys he wanted.  It is puzzling we are not doing better.  Yes we can make hay out of lower ranked players - we see that and that is great.  But maybe 3-4 teams have had the same level of success as UM the past 36 months and you'd think it would be translating more in recruiting.  Chatman is the only top 50 recruit in these 2 classes.

I'll bet anyone who wants it any amount of MGoBucks that Duncan Robinson scores more points in his career at Michigan than Jalen Brunson scores for whatever school he plays.

Webb has been saying that it was between Michigan/ND and he was probably a ND lean. I'm sorry but if a kid wants to go to ND to play basketball over Michigan, God bless him. We'll be ok.

Last week there was word that Brunson had set up the last of his five official visits, and Michigan wasn't among the five. Although that article says Brunson "is also considering" Michigan, he's off the 2015 board according to Sam Webb.
