MBB v Illinois BTT Open Thread

Submitted by alum96 on

I only started one other MBB game thread this year and it was for Illinois and that one turned out well.  Hopefully twice is still a charm.

Made it a little tougher for Illinois to get buckets as the half went on.  They are getting open shots and looks, just need to keep hitting them.  I think Michigan responds wel in the 2nd half and coasts to a 10 point win.

I can see that. With his stache (which I don't know if he has one right now because I cant see any faces) he reminds me of a french butler from the 1930's. I am trying to think of who I am trying to compare him to. Also, Jim Furyk.

I'm A okay with this half...

We're never going to be a great defensive team, so those complaining about that should probably stop watching Michigan this season.

We're rotating guys like crazy - expected, Beilein likes to get a lot of rest in the first game.

We're executing on offense for the most part.

Can't ask for much more. Illinois is playing better, give them credit. It's not like we've got the worlds greatest defense. Illinois is attacking and making plays, more power to them. We're doing the same and we're up 5.

We can't let them hang around too long because the crowd will get in it and they always root for the underdog. But I expect us to be up 10-12, hold on to it at the end by 8-9 and get a "boring" W and go back to the hotel and rest for the remainder of the day. Nothing wrong with that.

There is a difference between not being a good defensive team and letting a team get to the basket at will.  Our guys are athletic, staying in front of their guys on defense is about playing intelligent and sound defense, doesn't have to be spectacular but what went on in the first half is inexcusable.

This would be a double digit lead, except that we haven't contested a shot since that Morgan block in the opening couple of minutes.  Guys are scoring inside way too easily, and there were even a couple short jumpers that were completely undefended.  I realize that we're a better offensive team than defensive, sure.  But just one example, when Walton got posted up at one point, his man just turned and put up a shot maybe eight feet from the basket and Derrick literally just stood there.  No jump, no hand in the air, just sort of casually turned his head and watched the ball drop through the net.  There were multiple possessions like that this half.  It's amazing how much better you can be defensively simply by putting effort into it.  I don't expect them to be elite, just you know.... look like you're working out there, at least.

I'm sure we'll tighten it up some this half.  These guys are competitors and want to win this game.

...just have to give Illinois some credit. They're making some great plays and some tough shots. I mean it is what it is. We're still up 5 and at no point in the half did it feel like they were in control or had momentum.

There are no style points. Just calmly win the game by 10 and move on.

I'll say this for Illinois:  They have made a concerted effort to get the ball inside.  They're not settling nearly as often as is typical for them.  They would have won a couple more games this year if they'd played this aggressively all the way through.

layups aren't tough shots

edited to add I know i've been negative in this thread and I think we win this game going away, but there is no way we beat any team we play in the sweet sixteen on playing this kind of defense.
