Parker (Iowa DC) is Your Broyles Award Winner

Beat Sherrone + OC's at Oregon/FSU/Georgia.  Sherrone did a lot more; can't argue with what Parker was able to do at Iowa.   Great speech from Sherrone.

Any time there's a subjective vote, there's going to be someone people think would be a better choice, but at least in this case it's impossible to argue that Parker wasn't deserving.  That D was not only incredibly successful and the heart of the Iowa team's success, but they were also visibly incredibly well coached, not just talented.

It's funny that this is a common question, though it makes sense given how the profession typically works. But when you consider just how many hot/talented assistants flame out as HCs (probably the vast majority), putting them on a carousel of instability and job hopping, you have to give props to someone that's happy staying put where they are...

This must have been a "best at his specific assistant role" versus "so good at his specific role that he can also just straight-up be the head coach and win three top-tier games" type of decision.

To be that good defensively despite an absolutely dire offense is very difficult. Your margin for error is so low, and your offense isn't going to keep you off the field and give you a break. And it isn't like he does it with a bunch of 4 and 5 star uberrecruits.

Sherrone would've been deserving but I have no problem with Parker winning the Broyles.  Sherrone may have outcoached both Frames and Cyan, but he was buttressed by an elite defense and special teams, whereas Phil Parker was sandbagged with, well, you all saw that game.

Iowa won 10 games despite having the worst offense in the country in terms of yardage (240.2 yards per game) and the fourth-worst scoring offense (16.6 ppg).  Yeah, Parker is really good.

Ive had a feeling this whole time that Sherrone wouldn't win and its because his one game suspension earlier in the year and all the sign gate bullshit would be held against him. Dont know if thats actually true but that's my working theory.

Sherrone rocks and all.  Did amazing stuff.  But after Saturday, it's hard to say anyone does more with less than Parker.  How many of those guys will get drafted?  Can you imagine him at OSU?

I don't have a huge issue with this, since I think Parker is a very deserving coach to be at the top tier of consideration for this award and we saw how difficult his defense is to go against.  However, it does feel a little like a lifetime achievement award.  On pure defense, you can argue that Minter should have been there.

  • In total defense: Michigan was #2 and Iowa was #5
  • In scoring defense: Michigan was #1 and Iowa was #4
  • In 4th down defense (aka "man up"): Michigan was #7 and Iowa was #82
  • In defensive touchdowns: Michigan was #1(t) and Iowa was #62
  • In turnovers gained: Michigan was #7 and Iowa was #85
  • In fewest first downs ceded: Michigan was #2 and Iowa was #16

I get that we're going to be better with a functional offense, but we also didn't play in the B1G West division.

Personally, I think what Sherrone did with the OL, OC, and HC duties was unmatched.  One could argue he had more on his plate as an assistant this year than just about any coach in history.  He should have won...but if he was going to lose, Parker is the only one I would handicap as a worthy opponent.  Kudos to him.

Sherrone EASILY should have won.

There will NEVER be another coach to beat Penn St. and osu within weeks of each other to remain undefeated and win a game for a school's 1000th victory all time.

BIASED / Anti-Michigan award again.

Iowa's defensive stats are especially amazing given how bad its offense was. We have a top D in part because our O moves the ball and dominates TOP. So our D isn't on the field nearly as much as the Hawkeye D because its offense can't sustain a drive.

If a cursory search is correct, Iowa's defense was on the field for 896 plays, which is more than anyone except Washington (929) Utah State (902) and New Mexico State (899 in 14 games).  Michigan's defense, by comparison, faced only 728 plays.

Despite being on the field that much, Iowa's defense was 2nd in YPP at 3.99 (Michigan 4.27) behind only Penn State.

Impressive stuff.

As far as “wins above replacement” I think Parker is probably a better *assistant* coach than Sherrone. Let’s be honest, we mostly want Sherrone to win because of the job he did holding down the HC job in Harbaugh’s absence, which I could see the award crew not totally wanting to highlight.

If we’re purely looking at the performance of the unit they are directly responsible for, Minter would win the Michigan coach award this year.

The fanbase on the forum has really become too tribalistic and defensive, although I understand some of it with the general public's massive overreaction to the advanced scouting garbage.

Sherrone is awesome, but Phil Parker did more with way less. Our offense was also stymied by the three teams with a pulse, whereas the Iowa defense played really well against PSU and Michigan. It's okay to admit that.
