Two things I guess that help explain it. 1) Might as well do it now. No point in waiting around for the bowl game. And 2) so many blue-chip recruits, only so many snaps. So it is tempting to point at that cesspool and say 'Ha! Told you so'. But in reality they recruit assuming they'll see this kind of attrition I'd think.

This seems like a poor take.

  • Our DL returns a bunch, and who knows what last year's development looks like at the position.
  • OL...again, I'm not real sure until we know who may be returning. We were pretty deep this year and have a bunch of guys that have seen PT (Persi, El Hadi, Crippen, Gentry, etc.).
  • Maybe they take a LB or CB, but Hausman and Rolder are back with Colson as guys that played this year and have experience, and McBurrows, Waller, Walker, Hill should all be expected to take a leap forward.

I'm not suggesting that the defense won't take a small step back, but the cupboards are far from empty and I don't see a need to "run to the portal asap."

Keep talking about our superior/family culture.

I'm sure we're building it and I love it. But winning is everything. It validates assumptions about culture and family values etc.

Watch what happens when we lose in the future and players need to consider their pro prospects vs a simple bowl game or a shot to play somewhere else as cracks form and people argue over a flawed culture due to a loss or two.

I love and believe in M's Culture. But that culture always was, always is, and always will be validated or doubted based upon wins and losses.

That's the nature of sports.

As much as people might want to spin this into a "the walls are crashing in," situation, most of it has to do with the fact that osu recruits at a very high level. Their roster is riddled with 4* players that are buried on the depth chart, and them entering the portal makes plenty of sense in today's college football landscape.

McCord is the concerning one, if you're a buckeye fan. It screams arrogance and disillusion.

Not surprising to see very low numbers for the playoff teams, but that will change some after the season is over. Seeing Mizzou with a larger number was kind of surprising to me, although I know nothing about the caliber of player they are losing.

IMHO and I am not some self proclaimed college football wizard but you will not turn the tide in THE GAME by losing players who have lived the pain. Those are the people you have to keep to drive yourself to be better. I love they are wandering in the wilderness. The margins are so small in college football its hard to just win with pure talent anymore. You have to have an established culture that passes down the generations of your program. How we got to this with where we were in 2020 is mind boggling but I am loving what Harbaugh has established. Its a fickle thing and a few bad apples can sour the whole bunch but we seem to be just taking people and forming them to our team culture which is undeniably why we have seen so much success! Great comment.  And, this is one reason why I hold Hutch in such high regard.  IMO, he was a catalyst - and, helped crystallize the focus of the team.

Everyone deserves credit - it’s a team thing - and the coaches / staff - every player - were instrumental in the change / culture taking root.

Most of those guys got very little playing time.

They are likely to lose all of their offensive starters this year, and most of their defense. They could be truly rebuilding, pending some draft decisions.

"starters who are moving onto the next level. Marv, EE, Stover, Trey, and Miyan are all headed to the NFL. Kyle left via portal, so did Fleming. That's not even addressing the swiss army knife X exhausting eligibility nor the O line. Those are all skill position players that will need to be replaced is all. On defense The entire starting Dline is draft eligible, Both Steele and Tommy have exhausted eligiblity as  starting LB's and Burke is assuredly off to the NFL. I wasn't even referring to transfer players. I'm not entirely positive but I believe both Proctor and Ransom have exhausted eligibility as well.

I just named 16 players that will be gone or potentially gone next year.

Wow.  I don't care who you collect up from the Portal, having that kind of circus of all new players who never played together is not conducive to winning a championship nor The Game.

Day is on borrowed time.  He can't flub around next year and tell everybody to wait another year for his players to gel.  It's win or die.  If that were me, I would not want to face that with all new players, no matter how talented.

I wonder if Day is already out the door and so it does not matter to him.

Took a peek over at 11 waywardsouls website to soak up some schadenfreude, and holy cow they have gone full-blown "WHO IS PEPE SILVIA" over there re: Connor Stalions. No need to see for yourself, just reporting back. That is all.
