I want FSU to win next week against Louisville.  If GA handles Alabama and we take care of Iowa, it will be
1. GA
2. UM
3. FSU
4. Oregon

or

1. GA

2. UM

3. Washington

4. FSU

We would probably play FSU in rose bowl… a very good matchup for us.

If Washington beats Oregon, then they will be 3rd and we would play them.
Wouldn’t be great to play a west coast team in rose bowl.

Either way, we are most likely playing semifinals in Pasadena.  Best case scenario would be if Oregon wins (they would be 4th and play Georgia) and FSU wins (and plays us in a two versus three matchup)

if FSU loses, then Texas will be 4 and we will play winner of Oregon- Washington in pasadena

Assuming TX and FSU wins, what happens if bama beats GA? I would actually think GA wouldn’t be in…

right now you realistically have:

sec champ

M

pac 12 champ

either FSU or TX (assuming they both win)

If Bama, Texas, FSU, Washington and Michigan win:  Michigan and Washington in, seems like Texas is in and would be ahead of Bama based on head to head win.  One loss Bama v. Undefeated FSU is interesting for last spot.

Becomes even more interesting if Oregon, Bama, Texas, FSU and Michigan win:  Texas and Michigan in.  Take 2 of, Oregon, Bama or FSU.

Total chaos scenario ( please no):  Oregon, Bama, Texas and FSU win and Michigan losses:  Texas in.  Take 3 of Michigan, Oregon, Bama or FSU.

Michigan make the playoffs first and foremost.
But after that, anything that keeps Alabama out. Those assholes and Nick Saban have won 7 times cheating 100 times worse than anything Michigan and Jim Harbaugh didn’t even know about in this whole “scandal” and no one ever says boo about it. Screw them and screw all the SEC slappies.

How about

Michigan (beat Iowa)

Washington

FSU

Texas

I mean if Alabama beats Georgia and everyone else above wins out, this would happen, right?  I’m sure fair and partial ESPN and NCAA wouldn’t stand in the way of their SEC darlings being legitimately left out of the playoffs for 3 undefeated teams and a team that won its conference and head to head against the SEC champ

After all the comments about Michigan's weak SOS, Georgia's is somehow even worse. All the arguments about Michigan needing to be undefeated should apply to Georgia as well.

I agree with you that Georgia is going to get the job done, and I'm kind of hoping they do. I don't want an Alabama upset to screw up the rankings and spoil a Big 10 vs. Pac 12 Rose Bowl.

That said, it would be excellent if the SEC finally got left out.

I want three things:

  • Beat Iowa. Obviously.
  • Then, any scenario that keeps OSU out of the playoff.
  • Then, I want us to take the next step and treat our playoff opponents like we do OSU -- I want scheme to beat them and practice focused on that, not just for repping what we do well. We have to assume that our plan A will be stopped, and to carry that assumption into the game, building flexibility into the gameplan rather than just execution.

That being said, Michigan versus Washington in the Rose Bowl would be pretty great.

-Did you watch Bama today? Next weekend GA defeats Bama by 2 TDs.  Why even discuss this?

-In many ways, the UW vs OR game is irrelevant.  OSU drops out of the top 5.  UW wins, they naturally go to the CFP because UW is undefeated.  Due to OSU losing today, OR will move up to the #5 spot.  If OR defeats UW, Oregon takes UW's place in the top 4 CFP.

In other words, the Pac-12 championship is a play-in game for the CFP.

Let's get down to the brass tax.  The scenario we all dont want to happen: does Ohio State make the CFP if Alabama, Texas and FSU all lose?  Given that scenario, the CFP could vote this way:

1) GA

2 UM

3) UW/OR

4) Ohio State

Texas must lose, FSU must lose, and Alabama must lose for OSU to back into the CFP once again.  Less likely than last year.  Yet, still not impossible.

I think if Oregon was the PAC12 champ, Washington would be ahead of OSU so as not to punish Washington for playing in an extra championship game and the Huskies would get the 4th spot.  But obviously, if Oregon loses, they fall to 2 losses, and OSU gets in.  So I think OSU needs 3 underdogs and one favorite to come through for them.

I was thinking the same thing. If Oregon and Washington are both 12-1 and 1-1 to each other, are their resumes really that different? Oregon would have the conference championship and better eye test, so they would make the CFP team if there was only 1 slot for a 1-loss team. However, if there's 2 slots, I think those two would be the most deserving.

Arguably there is only 1 combination of championship game results that gets Ohio State in:

Georgia beats Alabama (ensure there is only 1 SEC team)

Michigan beats Iowa (we may be in with a loss, but I can't imagine 2 conference losers from the same conference making the playoffs)

Washington beats Oregon (ensure there is only 1 PAC 12 team)

Louisville beats FSU (no ACC team)

The real OSU beats Texas (no Pac 12 team)

We want Washington and FSU in. They’re both very beatable. Oregon would give us problems. Worst case scenario is Bama beats Georgia and UGA still gets in as the 4th seed.

It ought to be UM, Texas and Oregon/UW and Georgia/Alabama winner. No reason at all the SEC or B10 should get 2 teams with this many real contenders.

The Alabama/Georgia loser absolutely doesn’t deserve it. Georgia will have beaten no great teams. And Alabama already lost at home to Texas. So head-to-head eliminates them.

Georgia's ranked opponents so far have been a 10th ranked Missouri team, a 12th ranked Ole Miss team, and #25 Tennessee.

Alabama is currently #8.

Michigan has beaten second-ranked Ohio State and #7 ranked Penn State. I'd argue that Michigan currently has the most impressive win, and a roughly equal resume as things stand today. It wouldn't be irrational to argue Michigan should be #1 on Tuesday.

Of course, all that changes based on the conference championships, but it's an intriguing possibility, and it might be worth asking what's so impressive about Georgia this season?

It's an interesting question.

Another question I have is why all the argument about who we'd rather play in the playoff if we beat Iowa (let's not get cocky!), Last year the general consensus in the sports world was that Michigan had the easier draw against TCU. We saw how that went. Didn't mean shit what everyone thought.

The teams discussed all have a chance of beating anyone else in the playoffs. The odds may be longer or shorter, but these are all going to be very good football teams, all playing styles the other teams aren't necessarily used to. For me, that's what makes the playoffs so interesting.
