Klatt's Take - Agrees in Principle with Ono

Submitted by smotheringD on November 6th, 2023 at 10:08 AM

Klatt's common sense, 9-minute, summary is a refreshing break from what Brian aptly phrased, "all the bullshit".  Nothing new or revelatory, just lucidity.

"Let's step back and assess:

  1. Wants rules to be upheld.  Rule-breakers punished
  2. We must allow investigative processes to run their course
  3. Institutions don’t lead or govern based on sentiment or narrative but on facts. Period.
  4. Some “facts” have been leaked into social media which may or may not be true.  This has caused a mob mentality reaction.
  5. A narrative and a mob cannot be allowed to force the action of the NCAA or B1G.
  6. Other B1G coaches “victims” want action/justice NOW!
  7. There is nothing to act on now.  There is action within investigative processes.
  8. Patience, to the outside observer, be viewed as apathy, but this is not the case.  It is just part of the process."

It's also important to note that acting now to punish UM will forever result in the lost support of the conference's most powerful brand for the commish - and after all is settled and done seriously diminish his support from the other schools as they fully process this guy is easily influenced and bends to mob mentality and their rights and interests are therefore not safe either.

And of course, this guy is not protecting TV money.

That's why going after Harbaugh and UofM now would be career suicide. He'd lose TV authority for not protecting their interests. And he'd lose conference authority for not defending due process.

This talk of a move against Harbaugh now is PR jibberish. Pettiti did not get where he is by acting a fool and he's not going to commit career suicide now.

I like Klatt - and, perhaps I'm being nitpicky - not on the whole signs issue, but on the Michigan - Purdue game.

Klatt said that Michigan dominated Purdue in the trenches.  And, while I agree that Michigan's DL was very strong against Purdue's OL, it seemed to me that Purdue's DL played solidly and made it very challenging for Michigan's ground game.  Perhaps that's a credit to Purdue's game plan - their focus on shutting down the run - DE's applying pressure, with a few very timely sacks.

As for Due Diligence - Discovery - etc. - yes, absolutely give it time to conduct a thorough investigation, etc.   The scope of this Discovery should be extensive.

Finally - I think the real root cause of the "sign thing" is - the lack of helmet communications.   Perhaps, the B1G will recommend that helmet communications will be permitted in conference games - since, those communications are allowed not only at the professional level, but also the high school level.

Joel Klatt is one of the few national sports podcasts I listen because he typically doesn't give in to the hysteria of whatever the current thing is, but he does usually pump up how great Team X is that he just did a broadcast with on the previous Saturday. Outside of that he's about the most level-headed national guy out there.

Most are buying into the hysteria and not asking the questions. Who benefits from this? Who hired the PI? Did Jim or any other coaches actually see or use the information? Did Jim or any other coaches have access to the videos? Why do the B1G coaches want to specifically punish Jim and not the program? Michigan could still be guilty and these questions should still be asked and answered IMO.

He agrees in principle with rationality.

He articulated it very well.

To act now would be to bastardize your own bylaws.  Now you have the B1G backtracking a little bit.

I still think OSU wants Harbaugh gone, so the B1G will go with their 2 game ban, then a indefinite ban until  the NCAA investigation concludes. I just hope the M lawyers can get an injunction and hold off this ban on Harbaugh!

I agree.  Of course the Buckeyes want Harbaugh gone.   They continue to have a "great level of talent" than Michigan - and, have been handed solid losses the past two seasons.   The powers that be in Columbus are looking out at November 25th - and anticipating what's going on.

Do you think there's another coach in the college game that could have led this turnaround?

I love Michigan - I'm an alum - my children are students there - etc.   It's not easy to manage the environment - academics / athletics / alumni / etc. - it's a very delicate balance.   And, IMO, Jim does it very, very well.

When this all broke, someone in here detailed the actual rules and concluded that technically no rules were actually violated....is that true from what WE KNOW currently?

I've seen posts from a couple of people (one mgoposter, and one somewhere in buckeyeland) who've offered comprehensive breakdowns of relevant bylaw (and subsections thereof) language and came to the following conclusions:

- a 2013 rule change appears to have green-lit 3rd party scouting.

- 3rd party filming is legal

IF those interpretations of the language are correct, then the only potential violation would appear to be if its determined that CS was in fact on the sideline at CMU, and was not there at the behest of CMU, but was instead 'scouting' for M.

For what it's worth, I have not seen any interpretations of the bylaw language which explicitly conflict with the above interpretation, only interpretations of the bylaws that exempt the subsections that lead to the above interpretations.

What I have not done is looked to see if there is any sort of vetting/credentialing process that must be satisfied to make an individual/entity eligible to be considered a 3rd party "scout", likewise with someone taking video footage.

Joel Klatt has become my go to guy for anything college football. He’s fair and doesn’t play the hype game at all. Like many, I take Cowherd with a salt block, but Klatt’s pieces with him are pretty entertaining and informative

Joel Klatt is the adult in the room.

For those of you who bitch about the Gus / Klatt broadcast team . . . could you imagine Gus without Klatt?  Yikes.

Punishing Michigan now would have the same effect as Jim Joyce's wrong call in the Andres Galarraga perfect game. It will be forever tainted. Once all the facts are out and Michigan is exonerated, it'll have the same effect as vacating Louisville's 2013 basketball championship.
