Max UM reaching CFP: best scenario between PSU, Maryland & OSU playing each other?

Submitted by greymarch on October 2nd, 2023 at 1:25 PM

Before UM plays PSU, Maryland and OSU, All 3 of those teams will have already faced each other.

Yes, yes, yes...we all want OSU to lose every game from now to the end of time.  However, let's apply some logic to the scenario that best helps Michigan reach the CFP:

So when Maryland plays OSU, OSU plays PSU and Maryland plays PSU, for those three games, who does Michigan want to win each of those games, to maximize Michigan's chances of reaching the CFP?

We want Ohio State to lose to Maryland this weekend.  The Buckeyes are a fragile program right now with a fragile coach.  An upset like that will make them crack into shards like porcelain.

After 2016 Iowa I will never take a road conference game for granted.

Especially, once the weather starts changing.

Beat Minnesota.

Michigan just needs to win every game.  I think PSU has a real shot winning in columbus this year.  They look tougher than osu does and that can be a problem because if PSU finds a way to beat Michigan too then they're most likely going to Indy no matter what Michigan does the rest of the way.

As long as one of osu and psu are undefeated when we play and have 1 loss after we play, it doesn't really matter. That said, osu probably carries a bit more cachet, so osu over md and psu, psu over md.

It's difficult for fans to not look ahead given how the team has played thus far.  Being this good affords us the mental bandwidth to look past a team like Minnesota.  But I trust the Michigan players and coaches are fully locked in on preparing for Minny.

That said, we want OSU and PSU to win all their games before they play us.  We want to beat highly ranked squads to improve the SoS.

We need to win all of our games so who cares.  But I think it’s best if they are all unbeaten when we play them. So it’s a pick if Maryland or psu w loss.  I think Maryland is considered a lesser team by most so beating an unbeaten psu team is better.

Again, we need to win them all and if we do we will be in cfp.  So whatever.

The unstated assumption of the question is, what is the best scenario if we end up with one loss, because if we go undefeated there's no question that we're in. To me, the best alternate scenario is the inverse of last year: we lose to an undefeated tOSU and hope that that's enough. PSU and Md can't sneak past us, because they'd each have 2 or more losses.
