Cade's performance (Utah St. at Iowa)

Submitted by RealElonMusk on September 5th, 2023 at 10:23 AM

Here is what I saw watching Cade in his first start for Iowa:

  • Looked like 2020 Cade-  very good placement on short throws
  • QBR 35.9   his receivers had 3 or 4 drops
  • Deep ball placement was ok-  overthrew 3 balls, made 4 DO throws
  • First touchdown his receiver was open by 15 yards, defender fell down.  I was surprised it was ruled a catch because receiver trapped it against ground without his hand underneath
  • Cade looked less mobile or maybe I'm forgetting how mobile he was
  • Iowa's offensive line is bad-  Cade took a lot of hits -  I'll be surprised if he makes it through the season if they continue this level of play
  • Erick All only had 1 catch for 7 yards - three targets, Lachey seems to be the preferred target

Disagree low reward.  Iowa has several wins the last decade against top ten conference teams.  A win at Kinnick is impressive given the top teams that walked in to Kinnick with an undefeated record and walked out with a loss.  I do think most of the country recognizes a win over Iowa is no easy task but a win @Kinnick is a valuable win period.

The only ones that dismiss a win over Iowa and then build up a loss to Iowa are sec honk fans and media, espn..

I figured Iowa would run it up against the cream puffs in order to pad their 25ppg bogey, so I bet Iowa over 33.5 for the game. I felt pretty good after they scored 14 halfway thru the 1st quarter. So of course they score just 10 points the rest of the game. Absurd.

To be fair, scoring 24 points in one game IS running up the score by Iowa standards.

As a reminder, the team last year averaged 17.7 ppg and exceeded the 25 point bogey just 3 times (33, 27, 27). The offense scored 186 points total for a 14.2 ppg average (taking out the PAT's associated with defensive TDs). The defense averaged 3.5 ppg.

Granted, Utah State isn't an objectively terrible team, but it's not going to get much easier. They have what looks like is going to be a pretty bad Northwestern and maybe a bad WMU. Otherwise? I don't know, good luck, man.

That's about the kind of performance I'd expect. He's not the kind of QB that will typically light up the scoreboard on his own, and Iowa will never ask him to do that, anyway.

I'll never begrudge Cade for moving on. He lost his job because he got beat out by someone who's just better than him, and there's no shame in that. If he still thinks he's still good enough to play, then he owes it to himself to find a place that'll give him that opportunity. I hope he makes the most of the opportunity that Iowa provides him.

Still, the way he handled his exit, and then walking out before the season ended.....I'm not a member of that team so I have no skin in the game, but if I was, I think I'd feel a little slighted. I don't know what exactly was said between him and McCarthy, how he really approached the competition, but I'm not sure it would've killed him to say something like this on the way out instead:

"I've loved my time at Michigan. They had to make a decision they felt was best for the program, and while I respect that decision, I believe my best days of football are still ahead of me. I'm looking forward to the next chapter and finding a school where I can compete to be a starter and win a championship."

Doesn't burn any bridges, but displays the confidence in saying "Hey, I know I can still play, looking forward to going somewhere that will afford me that opportunity."

I typically take a peek at former UM players and how they and they teams are doing, whether they left on friendly or whiny terms.

I talked with a few fans both at the game and after the game and the general consensus is gratitude for his leading the team to a 12-1 season, including a big win over Ohio and an underrated performance vs. PSU that saved the day for our B1G title chances. Everyone knows about the riff he made going out the door, but it just shows that some people in their early 20s who've been stars all their life don't react well to being forced to prove themselves day after day. Give it a few years, when he's either working a day job or finds a role in football coaching for him to reflect back on his exit and make some conciliatory remarks.

I watched much of the replay of the Ohio Snow Bowl (2021 version) - other than the one really bad pass at the goal line, when he had Edwards running open to his right, the guy delivered the goods. The long strike to C-John that set up the go-ahead score in the 2nd was a great throw and catch.

His biggest test is this coming week at ISU. I don't think he will win at PSU but may be able to upset Wisky. They have the schedule to go 10-2 and win the West.

His injury, as Ferentz mentioned, maybe the kind where he will have to live with the pain and limited mobility for the season. He was never one to scramble out of the pocket and make a play, like we saw last Saturday with JJ.

Iowa fans everywhere are sickened by this new-fangled explosion in offensive production. "Scoring touchdowns?!" "Scoring passing touchdowns?!" "We"re practically a Big12 school now!" "The punter is half-asleep sitting on the sidelines!" Fans were overhead saying before vomiting uncontrollably.

I wish him well because of what he brought to Michigan football, but I won't be paying much attention to his season stats or details unless Michigan faces Iowa in the Big 10 championship or elsewhere.

I for one have no ill will towards Cade.  I thank him for the 21 season and the same for Erik All. That was a special season for many of us and to think that Cade whom we all consider to be a flawed qb led this team to a win over osu in a resounding win after that decade of blah is something I'll always appreciate.  And before anyone goes on about it was the oline and run game, of course it was, but you can't ignore how well Cade played in that game and hitting timely pass after timely pass that forced osu's defense to stay honest and hold the safeties back.  Every time they started bringing them up, Cade hit another pass right behind them or on the sidelines where the corner didn't have any help.

Cade instilled leadership and confidence to a team that needed it and built as that season went on.  And while it's clear he melted down in 22, we don't have to live in that thought of him as JJ became the starter and leader of this team.  So appreciate Cade for his contribution and let the rest go.
