Saban (sort of) replicating “Michigan Method”

Submitted by MGoOhNo on August 28th, 2023 at 4:44 PM

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…

When Satan (sp?) starts copying Harbaugh philosophies about players competing for starting time even during initial games, you may be doing something right.

No news on satellite camps, and Saban has  been paying players for years (so Harbs still has some catching up to do).

I mean there was that long internet thread with all the Alabama players of the DaShawn Hand era with all their brand spanking new cars and trucks.  Must have been 20 to 30 images of players with Chargers, Challengers, Camaros, Mustangs, various trucks, etc.  Each player had his own high end motor vehicle.  This was 8 to 10 years ago so definitely pre-NIL.  How does a college student pay for a brand new car without getting paid under the table?  Especially considering the backgrounds some of those kids came from.

You've already been banned so its kind of pointless for me to write this but I figured I should give at least one fact since you so clearly desired to be wrong.  Sheesh...

EDIT: Here is the thread from 24/7:  https://247sports.com/college/usc/Board/29/Contents/alabamas-recruiting-dominance-continues-wow-50860219/

It's from 2017.  I see multiple BMWs, Chevy Avalanches, Challengers, Mustangs, Camaros, etc.  As a Chevy salesman I can tell you that Bo Scarbrough's red Camaro was at least a 2016 or newer.  That's when that body style came out.  He has a v8 SS.  You can tell by the hood.  Eddie Jackson appears to have multiple high-end vehicles including a 2014 or newer Corvette.  Also multiple players are flashing money in these pictures, not just cars.

Anyways……..while there is no doubt Saban is a really good coach, there is ample proof that the majority of his success has been because of the talent advantages his teams have had. Which goes back to just how those teams have garnered those talent advantages.

Dear Michigan Realist,

This comes from a place of realism.

I have been a long time lurker here, and just recently began to engage .  From my short experience, I find the board to be (for the most part) full of rational/intelligent individuals welcoming all types of opinions and perspectives.  May not always agree, but still pleasant.

Disagreements aren't the issue here; but, your consistent terrible hot takes are.  Your insistence on being an unconditional contrarian, especially towards our beloved school is tiresome and quite frankly, waste energy and time.  Your comments such as "I hope Benjamin or Cole steals snaps from Donovan" and "I predict Roman will lose snaps to some youngsters this season" are examples of your outlandish hot takes that demonstrate your inability to be a "Realist."  Please think before you hit "send."

Let's eliminate this bad energy.  We have a lot to look forward to this year.

Proof that Nick is the most innovative coach is evidenced by how he has enriched the lives of the talent he has been forced to work with.

Those that would question the sudden desire to work with football's Michaelangelo by endless streams of top five recruiting classes clearly are inferior fans. A true Michigan FB fan would never not bow down to St. Nick.

If only a true Michigan fan would appear that could set wayward Michigan fans straight on the purity of Nick's majesty.

Alas...

How correct you are!   Since the 2011 signing class - Nick and Bama have faltered in extreme ways - almost intolerable.

Did you realize that Bama's 2018 signing class was actually ranked fifth?   My apologies for calling you out on that.   In 2020 and 2022, Bama's class was ranked second.

In the other ten years - Nick was stuck signing the top ranked class.  The dearth of talent he's been forced to work with is beyond comprehension.

Saban isn't a bad guy. He is relentless and made that program achieve it's fullest.  Imagine had RR taken that job he turned down.

Saban also called it as it is when coaching MSU. He said he left because the spotlight shone too brightly on Michigan and couldn't compete with it.  That's truth.

If I may - Michigan Realist is "calling me out" - on a comment I shared earlier in this thread.  So, if I may clarify - or add a bit of detail - to a few items.

Michigan fans are great - and, you don't need to be an alum or associated with the university to support it.  This includes athletics and academics.  The principles and standards of the school are high - and, it's earned global recognition and respect for its contributions.

In my personal case - since "Mr. Realist" is noting my comments:

  1. I am a Michigan alum,
  2. Both my siblings are Michigan alums,
  3. My children are currently enrolled at Michigan,
  4. I held season tickets from my graduation until my children were born - and, renewed my season tickets after they were offered (and accepted) admission.   I've been around Michigan athletics - for quite a while.

Regarding other sports - I personally know current and past coaches at both the collegiate and professional levels - and, that includes the University of Alabama.   What does "personal" mean?   If I see them after a game - I'll address them by name - and they'll do the same to me.   I'm not a huge booster - but, support the athletics and academics.

Do I claim "sour grapes" about Michigan recruiting when a prospect commits to another school?  No, I do not.  I hope the student athlete has made the best decision for themselves and their family.  And, since you're a Bama fan - there's more than one player that both Michigan and Bama pursued who committed to / played for Bama - those include Tua Tagavailoa and Najee Harris, IIRC.

I notice that you did not make any remark about:

  1. The NCAA adjusting their policy about teams conducting camps around the country.  The Southeastern US, as we all know - is deep in football talent - and, IMO, prohibiting a team like Michigan - or other schools - from hosting camps in different parts of the country - decreases the visibility of those programs, restricts the opportunity to introduce prospects to their program / school, and - most importantly - reduces the opportunities that might be available to talented student athletes.   The NCAA said - "No, you can't conduct / host camps that are further away from your school."   Please share with me your perspective - doesn't this decision clearly favor schools located in the southeast?   Schools that are members of the SEC and ACC?
  2. Bama's approach of using former athletes who did not make NFL rosters to participate in practices against the current Alabama roster.   Were you even aware they did this until the NCAA prohibited it?
  3. The "parking lot" and the vehicles driven by student athletes - at Mal Moore, Bryant Hall, or the Hank Crisp facilities.   This has been a site of "power cars" for almost 15 years.  Do you know where those facilities are?   Have you ever seen the parking lots there?

Saban is a solid coach - and he's recruited exceptionally well almost since the day he arrived in Tuscaloosa.

This will be an interesting year for Bama - a new QB is one thing - facing LSU in Bryant Denny will be another.

Going back a few years to 2011 - do you think it was "fair" for Bama to have been given an opportunity to play LSU for the national championship?  I'm referring to a "second bite of the apple".   That season - Bama hosted LSU in Tuscaloosa - and lost - the final score was 9-6.  Many Bama fans talked about "we missed field goals" and other things.   My view is - Bama shouldn't have been given a second bite of the apple - Bama should have made their field goals - and - defeated LSU on Bama's home turf - Bama had their chance and lost.   LSU earned their way to the NC game - they defeated Bama - and shouldn't have had to face them again.

Long time lurker, love the board, find it irreverent and educational.  Amazinblu's response is pointed, well stated, believable and well presented.  I've read many Michigan Realist posts and can only conclude the poster is anything but a realist.  Upvote Amazinblu, downvote Michigan Realist infinity.
