Which Part Of This Story Rankles You Most?

Submitted by UNCWolverine on August 21st, 2023 at 6:41 PM

The part that really bothers me is that our hater fanbases (ND/MSU/OSU) and national schadenfreude fanbases (everyone else) can/will now point to Harbaugh/Michigan in the same sentence as the Self/Kansas's of the world from a cheating standpoint but without a fucking ounce of the advantages that comes with actually being a cheating program. I understand that some of you don't give a shit, but I do.

I have friends/acquaintances across the country that are fans of just about every team. I am always so proud of not being mentioned in the same category as the SEC teams, OSU, Kansas, etc while still be a very successful program. So now this "admission of guilt" for buying cheeseburgers will place us into the same category as Bill $elf/L$U bball coach/etc. literally paying players to come to play for KU.

Again, you don't have to care, I do care. I will be fucking annoyed and possibly triggered now when someone references this fucking bullshit going forward, especially if we win it all. Of course they will just be messing with me, they won't really care, but I fucking hate that I will have to even hear that bullshit.

In a way it's kinda how I felt when Obama took office from a foreign policy standpoint. I love when the rest of the world likes us. I loved watching the ROW celebrate when he was elected. (Not trying to make this a political post, it's just the best analogy I could think of wrt this situation. Please don't go down any political path).

I really enjoy or take pride in the rest of college football world knowing deep down that we are not some rogue sack of shit program like SEC/OSU/KU. Welp, now the majority will just see the headline and throw us into category instead of understand this is over cheeseburgers. THAT'S what fucking pisses me off about all of this.

The only other part that actually annoys me is Dudek being able to take some fictional victory lap in his head over this bullshit.

Responding emotionally to others’ words is a choice. If you spend your whole life pursuing the approval of others you will likely miss out on things that actually make you happy.

The thing is that nobody believes Harbaugh did anything wrong here. Of course other fanbases will troll and make fun of us. That’s why we all love sports.

If you don’t believe me, out of my many friends, only one has reached out to ask is this true? Over a burger? Check out the Reddit CFB forum. Most of those guys think this is all a joke.

Lastly, use the most Michigan of Michigan replies when your buddies make fun of you. SCOREBOARD!

Give me a break. Harbaugh admits he does something (something small) wrong, and the school self-imposes a small penalty, and you see this as a sign that we're now wholly corrupt?

Like ... I mean, I know that George Washington and the apple tree story is bullshit, but ... wasn't that story told for over a century to indicate how honorable Washington was? He did something wrong, and he owned up to it and accepted a penalty? Hell, this penalty was even self-imposed!

I dunno, man. I feel like people are truly truly overreacting to this. Relax. Harbaugh did something wrong, and is offering to pay a not really enormous penalty for it. And people are hyperventilating. Jesus.

Haha, learn to control your adrenaline, bud.  That will easily solve this nonsensical anxiety you have with others talking shit about sports and, more importantly, how to handle real life situations.

They were cheeseburgers.. not hamburgers… huge difference.

And, I don’t know if I should say this - since it could be very damaging to the team I cheer for - I’ve heard that it may have actually been Cheddar - not American- cheese.

What rankles me is this doesn’t put anything to bed. Unless the ncaa says, “we’re good” this BS is gonna be talked about the entire season with a pending outcome narrative.

Newsflash - the rest of the cfb world didn't like us before this. We aren't a shining beacon of hope to them. If anything your post reinforces the stereotype of Michigan fans being out of touch and delusional about our place in cfb.

Nothing about rankles me. So he's "suspended" for 3 meaningless games that will be about as competitive as a varsity vs. middle-schoolers scrimmage.

Don't let a tiny vocal minority of opposing fans get on your nerves. The vast, vast majority of the country doesn't even know about it, let alone cares, and even among other college football fans this is a complete nothing-burger.

OSU fan here, I think all of this is bogus.  I think the NCAA occupies its time with focusing on these menial things to look busy while ignoring the larger issues because they have to protect their cash cows.

However, I must take this moment to point out how these were actual rules broken, rules put in place to monitor every program and level the playing field (I know what a joke right?).

But 4 years ago, people on this website wanted Chase Young suspended for the rest of a season for accepting a plane ticket for his girlfriend to fly to a bowl game (which he paid back before the story even broke).

A lot of handwringing about how minor these rules are that Harbaugh "lied" about (which I don't think is the case).  I just find it ironic that people wanted a player benched for the rest of a season for something like what Young was accused of.

It wasn’t just cheeseburgers, there were some other infractions alleged as well, such as contact during a dead period and having analysts playing an impermissible role. Self-imposing a meaningless 3-game suspension seems appropriate. I don’t for a moment believe Harbaugh lied but do think the minor violations probably occurred.

And you obviously didn’t think very hard when you chose the Obama analogy, and you definitely took it down a political path, so you have no basis for complaint when others point that out.

There were three infractions listed in the NOI: improper contact (the cheeseburger incident), coach(s) overseeing practice using zoom or something like it, and an analyst performing coaching duties.  The latter two were self-reported, the first conceded, and all were L2 violations.

Three L2 violations, three games suspended.  Is that a far more strict punishment than the NCAA gives for L2 violations?  Yes.  But Michigan is the "Leaders and Best" and can hold themselves to a higher standard.

What rankles me? That you brought in politics. No reason for that. Not gonna downvote though, because it's a decent topic for OT season.

Back to your question, it's upsetting because (in no particular order):

  • Often when a member of the Michigan program leaves, they trash us. In this case, Dudek. I don't hear of this in other programs. In this case too, Dudek took it to the next level and ratted us out.
  • In the same vein, other teams seem to get support from media and other entities, including their conference, while ours have actively tried to submarine the program in a number of ways (stretchgate, 2016 OSU officiating, etc)
  • the NCAA itself seems to have it out for Michigan/Harbaugh (satellite camps, appointing a known Michigan hater to the cheeseburger case)
  • We have an AD that seems to still be scared of the NCAA, while the majority of other programs tell them to fuck off, even to the point of having backing from the state legislatures.
  • We actually have broken rules (cheeseburgers, contact, back to stretchgate) but we do so in stupid ways that don't confer much of an advantage but do gave the entities mentioned above justification to screw Michigan.

It all blows, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. We're going to grind most teams into dust, field a dominant defense (outside of CB2), and the season will come down to beating PSU (road) and OSU (home). We'll be fine.

TL;DR it doesn't rankle that much.

I’m one of the ones that couldn’t care less. You might want to considering talking to someone.

Cussing throughout a post is usually an anger issue thing.

Don’t give yourself a stroke over something so trivial.
