OT - Bobby Hull passes away

Submitted by Amazinblu on January 30th, 2023 at 11:02 AM

A lot of hockey fans here - and, there's something special about "Original Six.

Any Red Wings fan appreciates hockey's tradition.   Unfortunately, one of hockey's historical stars has passed away.   Bobby Hull, the "Golden Jet" of Chicago Blackhawks, was 84.

Hoping he rests in peace with thoughts and prayers for him and to his family.

The infamous 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the USSR ---- Bobby Hull was banned from the tournament simply because he jumped to the WHA (Winnipeg).  That always seemed absurd to me, the NHL owners were just being jag-offs.

Hull and Orr BOTH missed that series (Orr because of injury): Russia put up a great fight but those 2 absences rarely are pointed out when people talk about '72.

Anyway --- Bobby was not a great guy (as others have noted), but that's for God to sort out now, I suppose.  RIP and prayers to the family.

no, a thousand times no.  he doesn't get to rest in peace.  he was an unrepentant nazi, racist, wife beating piece of shit.  he's gone, and the world is a better place for his passing.

i'd also note - prayers for his family aren't necessary.  they all hated his guts.

The racist/nazi stuff is shaky at best… we’re talking about something reported by only one source which happens to be a Russian newspaper in the 90’s.  It was a big event he was at, and yet no one else has corroborated the rant.  Now, it’s still entirely possible he said it considering he was a raging alcoholic most of his life.  No arguments regarding his wife beater status… he was a monster with the physical and verbal abuse he subjected his family to.

Yes, he did a lot of shitty things during his life and has lots to be repentant for.  But how do you he wasn’t later in life?  My only experience is the one time I met him with my dad and son at a hockey tournament about 6 years ago.  The keeper of the cup was there with every NHL trophy set up in a room for all to tour. Before they started signing, I watched as Brett led his father around (helping carry his weight) alone on a tour of the trophy room… slowly looking and talking about each trophy (much like my dad and I did)… likely pointing out each others names on each of the trophies.  I don’t know the current family dynamic, I don’t know what kind of person Bobby was before his death, but from a far it was a beautiful moment and didn’t appear as though Brett hates his dad.

Maybe --- but (1) the population is also increasing (that's indisputable), and (2) I think the "number of people per capita who are famous/well known" has ALSO been increasing over the last several decades (this is IMO, I can't prove it but I feel it's right).

Which means, there will be more and more deaths of notable people over time.

There's some lore in my family, a story that my father loved to tell. Apparently he and Bobby Hull were vying for the same woman at some point and my father did not win that battle. It's a bit of a murky story and my father is now gone so I can't get more information from him, but he did love to tell that story, always with a laugh. My father was all of 5'5" without an athletic bone in his body so imagining him and Bobby Hull going after the same woman is hilarious. (The woman would've been better off with my father, who did not beat women).

RIP??!!  Seriously?  F that guy.

Big deal he could put a puck in a net.  He was a well-known nazi sympathizer, wife-beater, and overall POS.

If you believe we're all judged when we pass, then I hope this prick gets what's coming to him this week.
