Michigan Insider Podcast: Newsome to TE coach, Jay to defense

Submitted by SanDiegoWolverine on February 8th, 2022 at 2:22 AM

I was listening to the free insider podcast with Zach Shaw and Steve Lorentz and they dropped the nugget that Grant Newsome was moving from analyst to TE coach and Jay was moving to the defense. They were quite positive about the moves and spoke of them as some deals.

Had anyone heard this reported anywhere else? What position would be available for Jay to coach on D? Hope he holds onto coaching special teams, that wasn't mentioned.

The number of experts who can only see gloom and doom behind every hire that has not personally not played the specific position to an All-American level and then went on to win a dozen titles as a coach first prior to coaching a position is nauseating.

You can be a great coach without having played that position - you need to be able to teach, learn and instill confidence/inspire young men to play to their highest levels.  Jay has done well in every position group, is one of the better recruiters since he has been at Michigan, and has an unbelievable support system in place for him to learn from.

Newsome by all accounts is intelligent, passionate and should be a homerun in connecting with recruits based upon the interviews and snippets I have seen on him.

Maybe, just maybe a few people see that they can get better without needing to bring in a retread and maybe, just maybe keeping some internal continuity and excitement is a good thing?

I find the news of Newsome surprising and a little disappointing, but not because of anything football related.  Everything I’ve read about the guy is that he is highly talented at anything he does.  He was pursuing a post grad degree from the Ford School of Public Policy.  I thought he might have a great career as a public servant, maybe even an elected one.  I have plenty of gratitude for him wanting to advance a career in coaching at Michigan, but c’mon Grant, you can do so much more!

Ah yes, because being in politics is so noble and wonderful! Maybe he realized going down the public servant career path was not for him. MAYBE he realized he wanted to something in his life that made HIM happy. Since, you know, it’s his life. Life you said he is a smart guy, I am sure he put some thought into this whole career thing.

You should probably reach out to him though and explain how disappointed you are and how he could be doing so much more with HIS life.

Its wild to me that people think its weird to question this move because Jay has been successful coaching other positions. If we went and hired Iowa's tight ends coach to be our safety coach would the reaction be that it makes sense and is a good hire because the guy is successful at coaching tight ends?

It is because it is too difficult to distinguish between Jaybaugh haters and legitimate concern over this move. This is partly a result of the persistent of the baseless critiques of Jaybaugh but also why would we question it? He has been successful and the people who know him best think he is capable.

Why not?  Jay’s held about every coaching position on the team with success except for Head Coach and Coordinator.

He will be a Head Coach someday somewhere and I would not bet against him.

Just curious, why is he moving around so much? I don't have a problem with it, but is it common for younger guys like this? Is it to give them exposure to every area of the game so they are a more well-rounded candidate for higher level coaching jobs in the future?

That was my thought. Maybe Jay walked into Jim's office at some point and said I want to be sitting in the head coach's seat one day and Jim said "Okay great, but we need to get you exposure to coaching a lot of different position groups so you can have the necessary experience."

Am I the only one wondering if Jaybaugh is about five years away from taking over for his dad as HC? I'm not for or against it, but it seems that he's getting a lot of experience with different positions. Special teams were great last year and his uncle John was ST coach before he became HC of the Ravens.
