Good hire for the aqua mammals.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:32 PM ^
Terrible hire, one year OC experience and 3 as a run game coordinator but everyone knows Kyle runs the offense. He was an analytics guy that’s from Yale. Also this smells of I had to hire a biracial coach because I’m being sued.

I mean, I personally wouldn't have fired Flores in the first place, but everybody that has been in San Francisco the past few years has said McDaniel is wicked smart.
Everybody's on the wunderkind quant train right now. It's probably a fad, but if Miami was going to take this type, McDaniel was the best option out there. I give him a much higher probability of success than O'Connell, Daboll, or Hackett.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:55 PM ^
The only question, Vlad, is whether these wicked smart quants can relate to an NFL locker room. An OC, especially one who does not call plays, can bury himself in analytics ad come up with killer game plans but a head coach the boss. The face of the team to the public and the locker room. After one season I'm cautiously optimistic about Matt Campbell because he is plenty smart enough (though not Yale quant smart) and he understands pro football players in his bones.
February 6th, 2022 at 8:17 PM ^
Dan Campbell!
Matt Campbell is Iowa State's coach.
February 6th, 2022 at 8:34 PM ^
Ha! I'm an idiot.
February 6th, 2022 at 9:44 PM ^
Nothing personal, but I hear this sentiment a lot, and vehemently disagree. High-level athletes in any sport, especially the NFL, can relate to a coach who puts them in the best position to win. The coaches who do that, tend to be smart, quant based coaches who can study and scheme an advantage. That is 1st, 2nd and 3rd priority. Of course, it helps if that person is not a raging asshole, can communicate, relates to his / her players and treats them fairly --- but is definitely not required. The most successful coaches in the NFL -- Bellicheck, Reid, McVey, Shannahan, Zac Taylor* are very much in the mold of smart, analytics focused coaches. Dan (don't call me Matt) Campbell is very much an outlier, and a fairly unsuccessful one at that.
*only including him because he's in the super bowl
February 7th, 2022 at 3:02 PM ^
I don't think Bellichek and Reid use analytics as much as the other coaches you mentioned, and neither really does Arians, so you really have to go back to the Eagles who used analytics a lot for the last Super Bowl winner. There are a lot of coaches who also outthink themselves with analytics and missed the playoffs - Browns, Chargers among others.

....especially the knee caps.

What is the porpoise of this comment?
Sorry, been waiting years, YEARS to use that pun ?

Drinking helps. The bottle knows dolphin.

Gonna be interesting to see what happens to Ross with Flores’ accusations. Clearly, one of them is lying.
February 6th, 2022 at 6:54 PM ^
Flores had better have receipts or his NFL career is over. It still might be but at least he’d be financially set.
February 6th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
Totally agree. If you are gonna levy such accusations, you better have a pocket full of receipts.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:04 PM ^
Yeah. I've been wondering exactly how that set of transactions was supposed to happen. Small duffel full of hundreds left in his locker? Bonus pay shown on his year-end W2? A Flores family member being hired by a non-affiliated Ross company?
That's a very tricky transaction to do.
Inquiring minds want to know!
February 6th, 2022 at 7:23 PM ^
Flores is about to get passed over for the Texans job by Luke McCown whose only coaching experience is his son’s high school team. I think he’s got a pretty good case.
February 6th, 2022 at 8:23 PM ^
It's Josh McCown - Luke McCown's older brother - and this seems intentionally misleading.
You're making it sound like he's some random high school coach when in reality, he played quarterback in the NFL for 19 years and as recently as 2020.
His last few years in the league, he was signed by teams not so much for his on-field abilities anymore but because of his ability to help mentor young quarterbacks, essentially acting like another coach.
Josh McCown has long been a well-respected mind around the league, not just some random high school coach.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:30 PM ^
Its Ross, Ross is lying. It will be extremely difficult to prove in court though
February 7th, 2022 at 8:01 AM ^
Well, maybe Flores is the next Michigan DC. If anyone would make this hire it would be a Mr. Jim Harbaugh...because functionally, strategically it would be a great hire.
February 7th, 2022 at 9:25 AM ^
Why would it be a great hire? Just curious, all reports are he treated his players like shit. Told Tua he sucked and they should've went with someone else. Also curious why none of his players from Miami are coming out to bat for him like some of Raider's players did for their Interim coach.
I don't follow the Dolphins, so maybe his players did come out to support him and I missed it.
February 6th, 2022 at 6:53 PM ^
Forgot/Too lazy to google it: was McDaniel (NT McDaniel, perhaps?) the Vikings' preference before Harbaugh or after Harbaugh?
February 6th, 2022 at 6:54 PM ^
No that’s McConnell
February 6th, 2022 at 6:56 PM ^
No it’s actually O’Connell
February 6th, 2022 at 7:58 PM ^
All these Irish dudes. Fascinating tidbit...
Number of Head Coaches of Irish Descent:
McVay
McDermott
McCarthy
McDaniels
McDaniel
Shanahan
Carroll
O'Connell
and if he actually gets hired, McCown
Number of Head Coaches who are Black:
Tomlin
February 6th, 2022 at 9:17 PM ^
Tomlin must be black Irish.

And for those who may be waiting for another Jewish head coach in the NFL to join the previous four Jewish head coaches in NFL history (Allie Sherman, Al Davis, Marv Levy and Marc Trestman), there’s this:
February 6th, 2022 at 6:54 PM ^
I believe the Raiders went with Josh McDaniels... so maybe that was it?
February 6th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
wrong irish name - O'Connell is their leading candidate.
February 6th, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
McDaniel was thought to be the preference before Harbaugh was involved, then removed himself from consideration. Which led to Harbaugh being considered (maybe incorrectly) as the top candidate and leading to the interviews. O’Connell is their leading candidate post-Harbaugh, and is expected to become official after the Super Bowl
February 6th, 2022 at 7:32 PM ^
Demeco Ryans, the niners defensive coordinator, was considered the front runner before he backed out.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:36 PM ^
Yep. Too many coaching searches this year. I’m losing track. Add in Michigan searches and I’m lost at this point
February 6th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
Shout-out to Dan Soder....crackle crackle
February 6th, 2022 at 7:25 PM ^
Hopefully he finally took a dump
February 7th, 2022 at 10:41 AM ^
Love the bon fire! Shout out foxhole! Dan will be happy for his friend, but sad for his team.

Huge W for diversity hiring practices. Progress.

Sure is, MLK Jr would love it, were back to judging people by the color of their skin and not the content of their character....

The Irish (nationality) rule the NFL.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:32 PM ^
Pretty sure the nationality of all of these coaches is American.
February 6th, 2022 at 8:00 PM ^
I recommend bringing over some third tier Brit football coach.
February 6th, 2022 at 9:12 PM ^
The opposite worked (well kind of) on the Apple+ series Ted Lasso. Obviously, it’s not based on real life, but neither was your suggestion (that I know of). +1 for getting me to rewatch the show.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:43 PM ^
So does this officially rule out Harbaugh to the Dolphins?
February 6th, 2022 at 8:41 PM ^
Mike Jones?
February 6th, 2022 at 9:30 PM ^
I just want O Connell to sign with Minnesota so I know Jim isn't.
