OT- Rec Sports
I am getting fat. The girlfriend is starting to make jokes about my belly and it’s making me upset. Time to find some recreation!
Rec sports are always fun, and many people on here are active. The problem I always have is finding a league and a team. So, let’s make a table or a spreadsheet sticky thingy! …but we don’t so….
If you are interested in playing Flag Football this spring and summer, please post! Depending on how many people respond, I can either organize a team or a league. There are two places that run games, High Velocity Sports in Canton and Total Sports in Wixom. In a week, I will have registration PDF’s and have further instructions.
Thanks.
This is unorganized, but maybe with some help from everyone, we can get this ball rolling!

You probably won't lose weight playing rec sports... the problem with rec sports is the 500 or so calories you burn during a game will be offset by the 4+ beers that you drink afterwards.

While the energy expended during flag football or basketball can be beneficial to losing weight, modifying your diet will be more impactful. That's not to say those activities won't help, they will, but breaking poor eating habits which you may have developed shouldn't be disregarded. Download a calorie counting app for your phone so you can easily track your macronutrients.
Rules to eat by: MOAR protein, cut out as much sugar as possible (i.e. read food labels), get your carbs from nutrient and fiber dense sources, DON'T go-fat free on the foods. Give yourself a "cheat day" once a week. Weekly calories in<weekly calories burned = PROFIT

I prefer to eat whatever I want to while working out for 3-5 hours a day.

and I'll throw in a few that I've discovered over the last few years:
Quinoa is a great substitute for rice and much better for you. Plain Greek yogurt is a great substitute for sour cream. Hummus is great on a sammich instead of mayo, mustard is good too. 2-3 pieces of fruit in your lunch help keep you from snacking on bad stuff. Whole wheat tortillas are good for breakfast tacos or lunch wrap. Avacadoes are great on almost everything and are very good for you. Eggs are a great way to get moar protien. Try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible.
The wife and I have tried going vegetarian 1-2 times a week and there's lots of ways to do so without thinking you're missing a lot. We have a cookbook called Vegan for Carnivores.
Small changes every day, don't try to do it all overnight. Think today with the goal in mind.

If anyone is interested, google it. It's basically just 4 meals/day of protein/veggies/legumes. Eat as much as you want of only those, don't drink calories, and go crazy one day a week. No guilt and you'll lose a ton of weight and feel exponentially better. Obviously you can lose weight a million ways, but this was a super simple way for me to drop 3lbs a week while never feeling hungry.

but that is a sport. The real way to drop extra pounds is through exercise over a sustained period of time. Train. Then the sports will become easier.

and not suggesting that you shouldn't do football. Sometimes a rec sport is a catalyst to other things. But whether its a sport or a workout, start slow. You didn't get out of shape overnight, you won't get back into shape overnight either.

Wait, switching to beerless tailgates won't even keep the pounds off?
There's no hope gentleman.

Have you considered joining one of the club sports? Organized workouts; coaching provided; scheduled competition. I played with the water polo club while in law school, and it was a big reason I was able to hold on to a shred of my sanity (such as it was and what there was of it).

for exercise? Cross country skiing is very good for burning calories.
Me? I'm doing some downhill skiing this weekend, which isn't nearly as effective in exercise-value, but a lot more thrilling and fun.
