Fields, Jones, Lance, other--if you were the 49ers who would you take #3?
Mac Jones has been the name most draft "experts" have been saying. But in the last 2 weeks Justin Fields and Trey Lance have been talked about the most. Trey Lance has "the highest ceiling" they say, but as of now he is a big work in progress. Justin Fields has running abilities all day and night long compared to Mac Jones, but not as good as Lance. But Fields did not run a passing game as complex as Jones did at Alabama. And Jones ran it very well: 41 TDs, only 4 INTs.
I would take Mac Jones. There's no way I'd give up two first round picks for a QB that is a work in progress as is the case with Lance--especially as (a Michigan fan) I'm fresh off seeing another work in progress QB not work out. Also seeing how most Super Bowl winning QBs in the last 25 years have been pocket passers, I'd be wrong to pass up taking a QB who has already run a pro type offense from the pocket.
I'd take Mac Jones.
What about you?
Mac jones didnt run a complex offense he literally led the qbs in screens and why are you talking about his 41 tds to 4 int like thats impressive compared to the others ???? Fields had 51 tds to 3 int 2019 while trey lance had 42 tds to 0 int. Fields had talent around him and lance played in a weak league but no one had multiple 1st round receivers one being a heisman, multiple 1st round line men , 1st round running back ,1st round defensive back and the greatest college coach in history . Also dont like how he sucked at his two pro days throwing against air . Im not sure what drugs you would have to take to like mac jones as third. And while pocket passers have dominated the league you would have to be blind to not see the shift from pocket passers to duel threat if not at least qbs who can move a little out the pocket in recent drafts.
That 'shift' has been happening for a long time. Vince Young was in that shift along time ago.
Mac Jones was awesome in the National Championship. Playing that good in the biggest of games is one of the most important 'intangibles'.
Tim Tebow must be setting the word on fire then with ur logic .
Tim Tebow..... And why?
Well ur using mac jones winning a championship as a big plus so tim tebow must me really good then
I'm using how he played on the biggest stage as a key factor. He was fantastic in that game.
My grandma would be fantastic with the weapons Alabama had against a horrible Ohio state defense.

Horrible OSU defense - LOL. That defense gave up 30+ points last season (Indiana & Alabama). I keep saying this, but when you play elite offenses that move at pace -- you are going to give up points PERIOD

This is funny... but doesn't Jones have like a 77% completion rate ? That cannot be undervalued.
I haven't listened to all the prognosticators, but of the the ones I have, no one has mentioned Mac Jones going that high. He is the least mobile of every QB in the draft, and not very big.

Please dont take this the wrong way but you must not have listened to ANY of the prognosticators because virtually every single mock draft I've seen over the past two weeks has the Niners taking Jones at #3.
Now, to your credit none of the prognosticators think it's a smart pick and seemingly 99% of the 49'er fans absolutely hate the idea but for reasons nobody else can see Shanahan is locked in on the guy. I guess the fact that he was playing with up to five other 1st round draft picks last year hasnt registered yet in their evaluation of his play.
To answer the OP's question I would take Fields all day long. He's big, got a cannon for an arm and extremely mobile. I predict he's going to be the QB in a few years like Watson is today where everybody overthought the player and talked themselves out of a great QB. And I think Mac Jones is going to be Blane Gabbert 2.0 - below average arm talent, not terribly mobile who will end being a massively overdrafted mediocre QB
Oh, and as a Browns fan I cannot begin to tell you how fucking NICE it is to not have to fret today over our pick, our QB, our HC or our GM. It's been a long time.

I would only take an ohio state qb early in a draft after one, any one, turns out to be anything other than a college system qb. Is it Fields? Who knows, but it's risky putting a top 10 pick on an OSU qb until proven otherwise.

Mac Jones = Drew Brees.
Fields had 51 tds to 3 int 2019 while trey lance had 42 tds to 0 int.
You're saying they would have gotten these numbers if the had been the QB at Alabama this past season?
Um yes ? Why the hell would they not . Literally a upgrade at every position.
You're making a guess, an assumption. I'm goi g by what has happened.
And why exactly do you think of Mac Jones what you think of him? And what round would you draft him?
And lance and fields stats were better so who honestly cares . Late first round is the best he deserves.
Andre Ware had other worldly stats in college. To say they were gawdy would be an understatement.
Its only about stats?
Then how about you dont bring up mac jones stats like they are all that next time ?
It was to point out his TD to INT ratio. 41 to 4 in from aQ B that played mostly in the SEC is fantastic
Trey Lance, 42 TDs, that was over 2 years, and 16 were Rushing TDs.
Mac Jones, 42 TDs this season, 41 passing, 1 rushing.
Lance had 3 less int with mac having a pick six as one of them . Not including mac literally having 1st round talent at every level . Lance stats are better when you include all those factors.
Would the chances of Trey Lance throwing interceptions have gone up if he played in the SEC?
Have you ever even watched a North Dakota game?
Would mac jones playing on North Dakota lower his stats also if you wanna play the guessing game . No longer being able to sit in the pocket for five hours.
With his accuracy I don't think Trey Lance would have even started at Alabama.
And I don't think mac would have even been drafted if he played in the place of lance
Mac Jones was very good in high school. That's why Nick Saban wanted him at Alabama. I don't see the point youre making. You mean if he wasnt as good as good as he is he would have ended up at a school that is not as good as Alabama?
Just take the L man. You got murdered on this one
Disagree, bleed blue isn't making any sense.

Pls tell me how I'm not making sense go ahead I'll wait guarantee ur gling to give the same dumb answer as the op

Here's yours. 'L'
Lol! Bleed blue is the one that needs to take the L
Because I'm using facts ??? No wonder every one thought joe milton was going to light it up if they think mac jones is worth a 3rd pick .

Actually he was taken as a back up to tua because he was in the same class . Literally only started because tua got injured and there was no competition.
To be fair, North Dakota State has the FCS equivalent of 1st round talent. Lance/NDSU vs the FCS field is probably pretty comparable to Mac/Bama vs the SEC field.
Noting the talent gap between Bama and NDSU isn’t really helpful without noting the talent gap against the teams they actually play against. NDSU regularly does Bama-like things at the FCS level.
No doubt if you’re comparing NDSU and Bama head to head, that Bama is more talented. But NDSU also plays a much weaker slate of teams while being the premier program at their level, making it easier for them to put up great stats as well.
I didn’t know Kyle Shanahan had an MGoBlog account.
If I were the 49ers I'd draft Joey Harrington and an 8ball
The trend is your friend. Stay away from any QB from OSU. They are great in a college scheme but can't cut it in a pro one. But same could be said about Alabama. Regardless, I'd go Mac Jones all day long.
....
You could say the same thing about Texas Tech QBs, but then that Mahomes guy turned out alright.
Honestly, if the worst thing you can say about Fields is that he went to OSU (and it is), you're just asking for a bad draft.
The tape doesn't lie. Fields is legit, and I think the Watson comparison is apt. More than one team will regret not taking him tonight.
I also think Lance will be good, but he's going to have to sit a year. He just hasn't had enough reps to walk in as a day one starter.
As for Jones, he'll be fine somewhere like SF or NE, where he'll have the necessary coaching support. But, if we're being honest, he's Garropolo 2.0, minus the injury history.
The tape also says Fields needs work processing more quickly and was the beneficiary of the talent disparity between OSU and most of their opponents.
I was pretty sure Haskins was the truth until he wasn't. He had good measurables and looked like a QB. I'm not going to bet against a streak.
Btw, Joel Klatt did a great analysis of why Haskins was fool's gold as a prospect in hindsight and how Fields is nothing like him. A significant % of Haskins' passing yardage came after the catch (i.e. things like short crossing routes that killed us) whereas a historically high % of Fields' passing yardage came before the catch, which indicates killer downfield passing ability. Fields easily led the nation in yards before the catch. This matches the eye test which has me scarred by visions of him connecting with Olave down the field.
Unfortunately, I truly do think Fields is a dynamite prospect.

The difference is Haskins was dumb as a bag of rocks. Fields is intelligent. The difference in their interviews is noticeable.
Even Meyer said Haskins wasn't ready. He had 9 starts, Fields has had 22.
Meyer also said Fields is as mentally prepared as any player he's ever coached. He prepped harder than anyone else and lead by example.
Jay Gruden didn't even want Haskins. He was forced on him be Dan Snyder. Then Haskins didn't learn the playbook, showed up late for meetings and embarrassed the team by partying maskless after a loss.
How bad did Haskins have to be to get fired a week before a playoff game and get replaced by a former backup QB for the XFL's St. Louis BattleHawks?
Justin fields, by all accounts, is anything but Haskins 2.0
All 3 will be busts I believe. Take Pitts and pair him with Kittle. Roll with G.
Pitts is the best player in the draft outside of Lawrence. Whoever gets him after the run of "shot in the dark" QBs will be getting the steal of the draft.
