Rashan Gary’s Contract

Submitted by Blueblood80 on May 4th, 2019 at 10:02 AM

Rashan has endured a whole lot of unnecessary b.s. through the past year or so.  I think it’s fair to say he can give a big eff you to all the haters (Including Chris Frey). I am totally overjoyed for him AND his mom.  Here is his contract summary:

People are accountable for their actions and really don't affect me either way.  As long as they're held accountable, I'm good.  I don't personally feel people like Ted Kaczynski give MSU women's golf some sort of off the course victory.  Shrugs shoulders.

Good for him, but I’m much happier for Devin Bush. He earned his contract at Michigan.

The difference for me is it seems Bush had an outstanding mentor as a father where Gary wasn’t as fortunate. I could be wrong but I have only seen Gary’s mother involved in his life. I can only imagine he endured some tough ass times. Would love to know more of his story.

It’s seems like some criticize Gary for exactly what you said, not playing above his ranking.  He was rated higher than Nick Bosa and Ed Oliver, both of which were game changing players.

What these people don’t seem to consider is that ranking HS kids is far from being a science, they are not exact.  You also have to account for coaching, scheme and injuries.  I don’t think Gary was “incredible” or a game changer but he was a top 15 draft pick chosen by people who do that for a living.  I don’t get how anyone can say he didn’t earn his draft position or not celebrate a career that resulted in being a top 15 pick.

Who are you to decide that Rashan didn’t earn his contract? Green Bay obviously thinks he was worth that pick. Rashan didn’t steal that selection from someone else that Green Bay would’ve otherwise picked. Green Bay chose him, straight up, when they could’ve chosen anyone else still on the board.

No, Rashan didn’t have the dominant career here that all of us thought he would have. But a lot of first round picks are made based on the player’s potential, and regardless of his collegiate production, Gary has as much potential, if not more, than any other defensive lineman in this year's draft class.

Your initial comment implied that Bush earned his contract and Gary didn’t. You stopped just short of saying it directly. That’s what I disagreed with. If that’s not what you meant, then you worded your thoughts poorly.

I don’t disagree that Gary had an underwhelming career here, relative to expectations. But he earned he everything he got.

Clearly you have little to no understanding how talent benefits as it moves to higher levels of play. And just as clearly, GB has an idea about how to use Rashawn-and it was likely more than somewhat confirmed when they met and worked him out. My guess is that they plan to use him on the weakside to limit his in-space responsibilities and at the same time allow him to attack more. It should be interesting.

Criticism is unnecessary BS now? The reality is, yes, he was a good player at Michigan but was absolutely a disappointment given the expectations placed on him from the beginning, whether those expectations were fair or not.

Have you similarly posted on the Brandon Peters and Ben St Juste threads about how they never lived up to their potential here either? No? Strange. Why is it just this player we feel the need to disparage? Kids come and go but it’s like the board gets off on calling Gary a disappointment. Welcome to your opinion s but why it needs to brought up so often is mystifying.

Brandon Peters and BSJ weren't the consensus top overall recruit putting up NFL combine numbers out of HS.  Why it gets brought up so often, I don't know, but the reality is his Michigan career did not live up to what his recruiting profile suggested.  Not debating whether that's fair or right or something that should be hammered away constantly.

Congratulations, son. You've just pulled down more with your signing bonus than I've earned in my entire life so far. Here's to a good balance of enjoying life with fiscal responsibility.

I was with you until the Stephen Ross bit. I'm not saying that 9 million is insignificant to him, but he is worth close to 1,000 times that amount. Obviously, most even upper middle class may not see that amount in their lifetimes, but I don't think you realize just how much money the super-rich - like Ross - actually "earn. "

You do realize "rankings" are based on a players ability to be a first-round draft pick. Gary being a top 12 pick even with underwhelming production shows we got exactly what we were promised with his 5*s.

This is the down side to higher "ranked" players, sometimes they're just waiting for their draft, trying not to get an injury that will cost them millions of dollars.

And I don't blame them one bit.

I'm glad you're "totally overjoyed".  Looks as though he will be making lots of money.

It’s so typical that in this unfortunate mini-era, expressing an honest and reasonable opinion equates (to some) with being a “hater.” It’s simply a fact that Gary’s play at Michigan never matched the hype with which he arrived. To believe, based on his performance in college, that he’s not going to be a dominant NFL player is a perfectly reasonable opinion. We’ll see what happens, but no one is hating Gary. I blame participation trophies.

Don't give him ideas. We've had 20 such threads. We get the point some people are disappointed. But the fact remains, him doing well in the NFL only helps Michigan and if we ever want another #1 overall recruit we should be congratulating and cheering for Rashan.
