MY (EX) ROOMMATE IS OLYMPIC CHAMPION!
A little context on the thread title:
Sorry for the spoiler for those who were waiting to watch the replay tonight, but I think that at this point, if you were interested in the Olympic Ice Dancing outcome, then you probably already know.
Congrats Charlie and Meryl on 1st place. They've really pushed the envelope in this sport. I have to admit, although I've been good friends with them since I was 9 years old, I never had a true appreciation for what they do until I started training with them in 2005. I know it's an old cliché, but they really do put 110% into everything they do, from on-ice, off-ice, weight training, dance training, diet, etc.
A skating coach about 10 years ago once told me "That Charlie White is going to be a champion one day." I looked at her and said, he already is...he's won 3 junior championships in the U.S. already. She said, no...he'll be a World Champion one day. Well, here he and Meryl are. 6-time National Champs, 2-time World Champs, and now, Olympic Champs.
Congrats guys.
Also congratulations to my other (ex) roommates, Evan Bates and Alex Shibutani, along with their partners, Madison Chock and Maia Shibutani. They finished 8th and 9th today. It was one hell of a time living with them all on Oakland and on Michigan Ave. back in 2009-2010.
Also, for those of you who don't know, they all read this blog on the daily (maybe not for the last couple of weeks, though) and Charlie has posted a few times as well. They're the biggest Michigan sports fans you can find out there.
Go Blue.

Stellar performance from 2 of UM's finest! I actually came home from work today to see them skate live. Super proud of Charlie and Meryl. Forever gold medalists, and forever Wolverines.

So who is the odd one out of you four?
But seriously, congrats to all of them. And I am sure you have at least some skill if you lived/trained with all of them

Probably still celebrating out in Mother Russia.
But as OP said, Charlie has posted here a few times.. Make yourself known Charlie, let us shower you in all the glory that is fake internet poiints.
Congrats again and Go (Red, White and) Blue!

What's really cool is that they are currently Michigan students, not just someone who used to go to Michigan. When they come back from their year off, they'll be taking classes and going to games and going out on the town in A2 just like everyone else.
Except for that gold medal thing.

have been gushed about too, as the young teams to watch, the heirs to Charlie & Meryl.
Here's the MGoBlue.com pre-Olympics feature on the Shib Sibs (safe for sports blog: no sequins):

EDIT: and, inspired by post below:

I felt that MGoBlog was not providing enough props for these athletes. The concept of the guys picking up and holding the ladies above their heads while skating is fabulous.
But please answer a question: "Is Evan Bates the great grandson of Dean Henry Bates?" The legendary Dean Bates was Dean of UM Law School from 1910 to 1939. My wife met Evan's mother a few years ago and assumed the answer was yes, but that may be a stretch for a better than even UM connection.

and we'll just have a posbang to commemorate that there are mgobloggers who are olympic champions.
Meanwhile, the 11W forum is still marveling at how creative it is to leave the 'M' out of words

I don't know much about ice dancing but their skating always appears to be absolutely flawless. Go blue!!!
