Winter Classic Open Thread
Winter Classic starting up soon in the Big House on NBC
On first glance, certainly looks like they're going to crush our record. There were some gaps in the upper bowl for the Big Chill, none that I see so far today
Puck drop upcoming

Glendening is going to get minutes today. I would love to see him get his 1st career goal in this game.

Only 2min?!?!

Cross check right into the side of Eaves neck.

Toronto fans go out of their way to defend Dion Phaneuf. He wouldn't be a top pair defensemen on any cup contender in this league, and they still extended him for 7 million a year.

But I can't find her attractive knowing that she was with Sean Avery.
January 1st, 2014 at 4:45 PM ^
Srsly.
Guy is doing 25 a night against the top lines from opponents and is plus 13.
I think they overpaid but his numbers certainly don't bear out your analysis.
smh
January 1st, 2014 at 5:08 PM ^
+/- is a terrible indicator of preformance. Phaneuf goes against the top lines and plays like crap. He isn't a #1 defensemen and they're paying him like he's elite.
Can you watch this guy play and honestly tell me that he's as good or better than Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Chara, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang? Those are the other 7 million a year defensemen in the league.
January 1st, 2014 at 7:36 PM ^
I'll take him over Karlsson and Letang but not over Doughty, Chara or Keith.
January 1st, 2014 at 8:09 PM ^
Toronto fans are so afraid of him walking they will defend his mistakes and refuse to admit he's not that good. It's like Stockholm Syndrome.
His pinching is terrible. His decision making in the neutral zone is equally terrible, and one-on-one he's average.
Phaneuf would be great as the #3 defensemen or as a compliment to a #1 like Brent Seabrook. You don't pay that guy 49 million.
January 1st, 2014 at 8:29 PM ^
Okay. Well, my anecdotal opinion differs.
Glad you clarified.
January 1st, 2014 at 8:50 PM ^
Thank you for making my point defending an overrated player by providing no argument besides a +/- stat.
January 2nd, 2014 at 12:16 AM ^
Versus your anecdotal data on your perception of his play.
I'm just saying I am not convinced by your argument. Not at all.
I am guessing you are not a Leaf fan. Too bad as your bias plays out. Anyway, here are some metrics better than your gut feeling.
extraskater.com ranks Phaneuf's minutes as the most difficult in the league in terms of player quality competition. Check it out. Plays 25 per night against that competition and more than 28 versus the Wings today. Phaneuf is plus 15 after today. He handled the Wings top line at the Big House.
Other interesting facts: dating to the 2011/12 season Phaneuf is top 10 among defensemen in goals (7th with 25), ppg goals (10 for 8th) and games played (169 for second). Second on the team in hits with 102 and blocked shots with 76.
The guy is willing to fight as opposed to several of the defensemen you listed (Karlsson I'm looking at you).
In summary, your arguments are limited to your gut feeling and not much more. Given the cap moves up next year substantially 7 mil per season for a 25-28 minute a night player is not bad given the metrics above.

Wow, replay shows how huge that toe save was by Howard.
January 1st, 2014 at 2:50 PM ^
Listed as questionable, but I doubt he will be back
January 1st, 2014 at 2:56 PM ^
Toronto goalie took a chance there, but we couldn't capitalize.

Alfredsson! 1-0 WINGS!
January 1st, 2014 at 3:05 PM ^
B-E-A-utiful.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:05 PM ^
But that wasn't a kick in any way.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:06 PM ^
Looks like it deflected off Toronto stick.

PP Wings.

Judging by the international success of this event, this will ultimately pave the way for a WrestleMania at Michigan Stadium in the future.
Too big a pay day to pass up. People come in from all around the world for that. They did one at MetLife last year and it had 80K+. The Silverdome still holds the record with 93K+.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:10 PM ^
Glendening and Paul Ranger have been going at it all game.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:10 PM ^
Look, NBC, I know you're using about 82 cameras. We don't need you showing off every fucking one of them in the middle of a key power play.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:14 PM ^
Howard shuts the door, Kindl to the box.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:19 PM ^
Damn, Kindl didn't close his hand on the puck!
January 1st, 2014 at 3:20 PM ^
Another big save by Howard!
January 1st, 2014 at 3:21 PM ^
Fuck, they score. 1-1.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:44 PM ^
Wings alumni won their games, but this one is for points, so c'mon, Wings, let's win this!
January 1st, 2014 at 3:58 PM ^
....but look at the talent on the Wings alumni teams versus the Leafs. Not even in the same league.
Sundin is about the only Leafs guy that could hang with Detroit's best.

January 1st, 2014 at 3:50 PM ^
Well, the fans there don't have to worry about their beer being cold. #HALOL

I've worked Adrian College's womens' hockey games the past couple years. Some of the girls that play hockey are real smokeshows.

Shit. They score, 2-1 them.
January 1st, 2014 at 3:56 PM ^
Fuck.
