OT: C-USA/Mountain West Merger Called Off, Both Conferences Expanding Though
Didn't see this posted anywhere.
The following will take place in 2013-
Conference USA will expand to 14 by adding Florida International, Louisianna Tech, North Texas, UT-San Antonio (program begins this season), UNC-Charlotte (program begins in 2013) and Old Dominion (FCS School).
The Mountain West will expand to 10 by adding Utah State and San Jose State.
Texas State, who is a FCS school and originally headed for the WAC, will join the Sun Belt.
This seems to be the end of the WAC, since this would leave them with two members.
New Backronym for WAC. Wanting an Athletic Conference. In other words those two teams will be independent real soon.
What conference would take NMSU and Idaho?
Maybe the MWC to get to 12 members for a conference championship game.
that they may be forced to drop back to FCS even though that is not their preference. But at least they'll get a playoff.
I'd like to see NMSU and Idaho play each other 9 times. First one to 5 wins is the conference champion.
Interesting to see that the state of Idaho didn't make Boise State and Idaho a package deal in the same way that the state of Oklahoma made OU and OSU a package deal when they were involved in expansion talks.
In other words, it's interesting to see that the state of Oklahoma cares infinitely more about college football than the state of Idaho?
Idaho to the Big East? LOL, they might have taken them.
Let's be honest... nobody wants to watch NMSU and Idaho play each other. Ever.
Even in those circumstances, neither team could win that many games.
Come on now, show a little compassion. Take Montana and Eastern Washington too ... do they still have that red turf?
This seems more sane
Dear Big East: Please put all your new toy football teams back where you found them and go away. Sincerely, everyone who likes geographical sanity.
(let's face it: CUSA spanning from Norfolk to El Paso isn't exactly geographical sanity. ODU is horribly out of place when they ought to be playing hoops with GMU, W&M, VCU, etc.)
Honestly, after looking at this map of the Big East schools they really need to change the name of their conference. The Big All-Over-the-Fucking-Place would be suitable.
I think that I read somewhere that the WAC will get the University Of Denver, Seattle University and UT - Arlington, but I don't think any of them field a football team, so it really does seem that it will be Idaho and NMSU going at it for nine weeks and a bye thrown in there. The predicted cumulative in-conference record will be 2-16 (both teams going 1-8) with neither team going to a bowl.
Here is an interesting little note. App State is considering a jump to FBS. Only thing putting the jump off was what league they could/would eventually be in.
They now have two openings in the Sun Belt. If app moves to FBS by the time Michigan plays them in 2014, their payout is increased to $1 million.
Wonder if the conference shuffling will die down in the next couple of years- this is getting absurd...
