Sparty uniforms for game vs. Michigan
Ugh! http://www.msuspartans.com/view.gal?id=101374
EDIT: Here is a link to an online column by Grinczel from the site: http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/091311aac.html.
Love this line:
"Unveiled Tuesday morning by Nike, the uniforms are stylishly understated compared to many contemporary alternative uniforms seen these days throughout sports, though beyond hip for today's techno-savvy college football player."
"If an iPad were a football uniform, it would look like this."
September 13th, 2011 at 10:12 AM ^
Even this guy thinks those look bad......
September 13th, 2011 at 10:17 AM ^
"Hip" is a word used by people who are definitely not, to describe something they think "the young kids will like."
September 13th, 2011 at 10:17 AM ^
There is a big mohawk trend begining with helmets lately, and I dont like it one bit.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:19 AM ^
I don't think they look too bad, at least not any worse than their usual jerseys (the font is still awful). I understand the whole gold <-> 300 <-> spartan <-> history or whatever it is they are doing because they think it's awesome, but it's still the most stupid part. Your colors are green and white, yet these are black, green, and gold. Wear your damn school colors if you're so proud of them rather than wearing meh Baylor jerseys.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:30 AM ^
Go Green....Go White...Derp!
September 13th, 2011 at 10:23 AM ^
So they're still going with the 300 Spartans hot gates King Leonidas thing? They have Greek letters that say "Molon Labe" on the front of the helmet in the stripe.
Aparrently it's a quote from Leonidas to the Persians that is the ancient Greek equivalent of "Come at me bro".
September 13th, 2011 at 11:51 AM ^
"Molon Labe" roughly translates to "come and take them" and was supposedly the response of the Spartans when ordered by the Persians to give up their weapons.
Fun facts about Thermopylae:
1) There were 300 Spartans, but as many as 7000 total Greeks involved
2) All the Spartans died
3) After the battle, the Persians rampaged through Greece and burned Athens to the ground
4) The tide of the invasion was not turned until the Persians were defeated in a naval battle at Salamis by a primarily Athenian fleet
5) << 1% of the "Spartans" in East Lansing actually know any of this
6) "Molon Labe" will be hilariously ironic when Sparty loses 5 fumbles
September 13th, 2011 at 10:26 AM ^
For an alternate uniform, these aren;t so bad. Little things could be imporoved, IMHO, but I kind of like the bronze and the green Spartan. Don't kill me.
September 14th, 2011 at 4:50 PM ^
I agree. I think they look really good, apart from the fact that they aren't the true school colors
Also, I could say something about people in "glass Big Houses", i.e. Sparty's alternative unis look way better than our's in the ND game.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:29 AM ^
"The new Sparty uniforms also actually feature the quote Leonidas uttered at the Persians in the battle of Thermopylae, a fitting tribute because the Spartans are named after the Spartans after all, and also because like Michigan State football it ends with everyone dying."

And for those here clamoring for Michigan to be a Nike program again - Silence!
Looks like we're going to beat the hell out of Wayne State in a few weeks. And why is it that State uses the term "Walmart Wolverines" when their regular uniforms look like Walmart and these new ones look like Gibraltar Trade Center?
September 13th, 2011 at 10:35 AM ^
Ugliest. Uniforms. Ever.
My first reaction was: Colorado State JV team?
September 13th, 2011 at 10:36 AM ^
If anything, wouldn't it look like Penn State's?
September 13th, 2011 at 10:43 AM ^
Have to say Adidas did a much better job with UM and ND than any of the new stuff I'm seeing by Nike and Under Armor. I'm not sure "techno-savvy" translates to a sport so filled and inspired by tradition.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:44 AM ^
me more from a tradition standpoint if MSU had any consistent uniform tradition. Since they change the tone of the green every few years or the helmet logo who the f cares what MSU wears.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:56 AM ^
The first time I saw this, I honestly thought it was a Baylor uniform. Unreal.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:58 AM ^
I just want to say that I hate this whole trend of "alternative" uniforms. What's wrong with just having home and away jerseys?
I guess that the younger generation likes these and will buy them, so there is profit to be made, which means that these things are here to stay.
I just hope that they are limited to one wearing per season. Also, watching the ND game, our "throwback" jerseys really grew on me - I wouldn't replace my #2 Woodson era, #1 Braylon era or #16 Denard jerseys with one, but I did like it.
September 13th, 2011 at 10:58 AM ^
Atrocious.
September 13th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
Spartans were not big on gold. Bronze maybe because it was hard. They were minimalists. They would have decided to go to war helmetless over wearing a POS malleable gold helmet.
I don't mind the uniforms so much, but the green color kind of sucks. Also, the green on gold makes them look like an opponent we've played before.
September 13th, 2011 at 11:10 AM ^
Vomit.
September 13th, 2011 at 11:17 AM ^
The first thing that came to my mind was South Florida with the word "SPARTANS" on the chest.
September 13th, 2011 at 11:22 AM ^
Since when are black and gold MSU colors? That uniform looks like the result of an MSU-Purdue merger, or of the Dallas Stars switching from hockey to football.
September 13th, 2011 at 11:22 AM ^
as long as it is the losing uniform
September 13th, 2011 at 11:29 AM ^
They look sharp - love the shoes. They're not the school colors, but since Sparty doesn't follow any other rules, no big deal. Cheat on the field, play convicts, do lots of drugs, say "zero tolerance" then say "the kid deserves a chance" - might as well make up new school colors.

Thanks Engin77! This was the first message board post in my life so I appreciate the encouragement. Been reading the stuff for a couple of years, thought it was time to join the fun.
September 13th, 2011 at 12:35 PM ^
That's the uniform of a national recruiter if I've ever seen one.
September 14th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
Overrated? Who the heck said my comment was overrated? It was, by the way, the very first comment I've ever posted on a message board (and one of the funniest on this post, if I do say so myself) - just to get slammed down. Tough world.
September 13th, 2011 at 11:50 AM ^
What the fuck? When did MSU become USF?
September 13th, 2011 at 11:59 AM ^
Did they have some left-over gold helmets from the ND effort? Glue a little Sparty in place of the lucky charm and presto!
September 13th, 2011 at 12:00 PM ^
Nike, pure garbage. Thank you adidas , for gods sake.
September 13th, 2011 at 12:03 PM ^
MSU just got trolled by Nike.
September 13th, 2011 at 12:28 PM ^
Ah my eyes! The goggles, they do nothing!
September 13th, 2011 at 12:45 PM ^
how kirk cousins was so geeked when the designers told them they liked the MSU one just as much, if not more, than all the other designs. kid got LIED to... BIG TIME.
EVERY design, even Stanford, is better than this and maintains the integrity of school branding, etc. the Navy set is ridiculous - really cool - and what, at most, I would hope a UM Pro Combat would be.
September 13th, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
Go Green, Go Gold? It looks like a ND Drunken' Irish screwed an Oregon Duck, which has surely happened but why do they have to celebrate that?
September 13th, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
I think Phil Knight is trying to spread the Oregon seed......it's the NCAA equivalent of "The Andromeda Strain".
September 13th, 2011 at 1:51 PM ^
it looks like the Oregon Duck and the Irish Leprochaun had a hideous love child that they put up for adoption in the most foresaken place they could think of.
September 13th, 2011 at 3:16 PM ^
I can see the chant now... "We Are.....Wayne State"
Seriously, though, those would be sweet for WSU, for MSU, absolutely awful.
Why can't schools be subtle with their uniforms? We added the little 'M' to ours on the neck - nice and subtle, but still a change. I would hate to see what Nike would try to do to us if they still had us...Maybe brown fur on the back to simulate an actual wolverine?
September 13th, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
Well to be fair, when MD took over the MSU program they added a small spartan helmet above the names on the back of jerseys as well. Remember that this PC deal is for one game, one year.
September 13th, 2011 at 3:22 PM ^
resident archaeologist stepping in,..
in no way are those a throwback to "spartan warriors"..
whatsoever.
