What are our expectations of Hoke 3 or 4 years down the road?

Submitted by mejunglechop on

At the beginning of the Rodriguez era Brian envisioned symmetry in the renovation of the Big House and the rebuilding of the Michigan football program with the anticipated arrival date of 2010. He was convinced Rodriguez would get at least 4 years to see through his vision since it was a fairly radical departure from Michigan’s traditional offensive identity. While Rodriguez was able to recreate Michigan’s offensive identity in the original timeframe because of defensive failings Rodriguez only lasted three years.

So, now it’s 2011 and Hoke is the new Man and it strikes me as a good time to mark down expectations. Where do we have to be in 2013 and 2014 for you to be satisfied with the trajectory of the program?

Personally by the end of 2013 I think it's fair to expect at least one ten win season and a long term outlook at least on par with any big ten team. Thoughts?

I would be pretty content to see our defense regularly hold teams under 20 points before the end of the half. With that said, I'd say my biggest expectation is fielding an intimidating and confident defense in the next couple of years.

1. Pointing
2. Never saying "Ohio State"
3. Something where Dantonio ends up looking like an asshat
4. More pointing
5. Something that looks like a real live defense
6. WINNING GAMES, PROBABLY 8-10 EACH YEAR
7. Tremendous quotes about how tremendous we/the other team are, tremendously
8. References to Bo, complete with semi-religious undertones
9. Smashing of mouths
10. Don't forget pointing

Actually, only 6 matters. If he doesn't do that, it's coaching search all over again, but without the pointing.

Winning the inaugural non-BCS National Championship, of the plus-one format, 24-9 (all FG's with his fully-loaded, Mattison-run old-school Michigan defense) against TCU.

I expect to see 8/9 wins this year, ranked 25 at the end and then 8 wins in 2013 (losses coming at Alabama, Ohio State, Nebraska.. one more from somewhere). In 2014, I expect 11 wins, which should probably be enough for a national championship. Brady Hoke has been shown to dramatically improve talent-less teams quickly... but he's always been hired away as soon as he's seen tremendous success, contributing to his seemingly poor win-loss record. San Diego going from 2-10 in one season to 9-3 the next with largely unheralded recruits shows his coaching ability and I think given all the talent here at Michigan he should definitely improve to 9 wins this season.

I want to be proud of Michigan again.

Here are player expectations:

  • I want them to be in every game for 60 minutes.
  • I want them to compete.
  • I want them to try hard.
  • I want them to do their best.
  • I want them to excel at the little things when no one is looking.
  • I want them to excel consistently.
  • I want them to be patient when things don't happen overnight.
  • I want them to do things the right way.
  • I want them to play as a team, not as 22 individuals.
  • I want them to support each other.
  • I want them not to be concerned about what other people say, good or bad.
  • I want them to be able to be proud, and hold up their heads.
  • When they lose, I want them to accept blame.
  • When they lose, I want them to not whine, or complain about the refs.
  • When they lose, I want them to reflect well on Michigan.
  • When they win, I want them to be gracious and kind, humble, and joyful.
  • When they win, I want them to savor the win, yet prepare for the next game.
  • When they win, I want them to reflect well on Michigan.

For Coach Hoke:

  • I want him to be a good teacher.
  • I want him to delegate to his position coaches.
  • I want him to recruit excellent position coaches.
  • I want him to continue to learn.
  • I want him to seek good counsel.
  • I want him to stand up for what is right, despite any personal cost.
  • I want him to mentor his young coaches and his players.
  • I want him not to cut corners.
  • I want him to take blame when deserved.
  • I want him to lead by example.
  • I want him to recruit well.
  • I want him not to pontificate.
  • I want him to do things the right way.
  • I want him to reflect well on MIchigan.
  • When Michigan loses, take blame where due, and learn for another day.
  • When Michigan wins, give credit where due.

These are my expectations. Will they all be met? No. But if these things happen, I will be proud, win or lose. And if these things happen, I am confident Michigan will win, much more than they lose.

B1G championship game in 2013 and a defense that holds opponents to 20 ppg or less. Favorites to win the B1G from 2014 onwards. One key will be for people not to freak out if we post a similar (or worse) record in 2012 vs. 2011. Our 2012 schedule looks pretty brutal (Alabama, @ND, @Nebraska, @Ohio) while our 2011 schedule doesn't look too bad.

This is Michigan dude. I expect nothing less than a National Championship. I feel the same every year whether it's Carr, RRod, or Hoke. I love what coach Hoke is doing thus far and I think this team has 9 win upside. I think we can turn things around relatively fast and I won't stand for 5 to 9 loss seasons...

I expect that Michigan will win 3/4 of their games.  I expect Michigan will win at least half of their rivalry games.  I expect Michigan will be a fixture in the top 25.  I expect Michigan will win at least half of their bowl games.  That is all.

What do I hope for?  The sky is the limit.  The way Hoke is recruiting, the sky is the limit.

Hoke has already shown that he's a driven high priest of the Tabernacle of Blue. This is good.

He has the clear confidence of the locker room. Also good.

As far as assistant coaches, he has chosen well.

He inherits an under-achieving defense, but an offense with very high potential.

With better technique, we will see a better defense. This team can win any of its games if the effort is there, if mistakes are minimized, and if the angry Michigan-hating gods of injury do not throw lightning bolts at key players.

I see 9-3 in 2011. Fewer wins would disappoint a little. 7-5 is out of the question. More wins are there for the taking this year, despite our lack of depth on the lines, because no one else is perfect. Nebraska is inconsistent, Wiscy may be too highly rated, Iowa has to rebuild, as does PSU, and OSU who knows what is going on there.

I'd expect to see improvement from 2011, and a regularly solid, B1G-contending team as before 2007.

I hate the MNC and would like to see a return to traditional bowls, so I don't care about the MNC at all.

What I expect from this coach can't be any different than I would expect from any coach given 3-4 years, becuase this is UM and we can only tolerate the best.

What I expected from UM coaches in the past was consistent 10+ win seasons while challanging for the BCS championship. We started to fall short of that toward the end of the Carr era and made a coaching change because of it.

During the RR era I was with Brian. I thought 4 yeras was the minium you would give a coach  in a situation where an entire system was being changed. Until the bowl game I thought that should have been the case as he showed consistent improvement over the course of the three years (record wise and on offense) and there was little doubt it would have continued in year 4. He didn't get his 4th year (and after the bowl game I was ready to fire him myself) so we find ourselves here.

Whether you loved RR or hated him, it is clear that BH has come in to a much better situation in terms of the roster. He will be changing our offense over time as well, but has a roster that won't make that such a painful process. For this reason I think he should be able to achieve success quickly.

I would say that next year he has to be in the running for the B1G championship game late into the season and by year three we need to be there. In year three and four we need to be in the conversation for the BCS championship game as well.

What we also have to see is continuous improvement in all areas of the team (from overall record to statistics for the O and D). I want to see this improvement occurring throughout the season and offseason (which we didn't see with RR). My biggest problem with the previous regime was that we didn't see improvement throughout the season. They seemed to make some strides during the offseason, but there was no tangible evidence throughout the season that improvement was being made.

Finally, I think DB set the standard with RR when he fired him after 3 years. It would be my hope that he has set down with BH and outlined exactly where he wants him to be in three years time so BH knows what the expectations are. If he doesn't meet those, than time to move on again. My gut tells me BH will exceed those though.

You pretty much have to wait until 2013 to have high expectations for Hoke. With traveling to Columbus, Lincoln, and South Bend plus the Alabama game next year, 10 wins will be hard.

I think that if Hoke continues with his strong recruiting and we win double digits in 2013 I will be satisfied.

I want to get back to the days when 8 wins was unacceptable, not something that we hope for or accept. to be able to lose a player to injury, or an early NFL draft entry, and to just "retool" like we didnt miss a beat. To just be Fucking Michigan again!

I actually expect we'll be better the next two years than we will be in three years (through no fault of Coach Hoke and staff).  You win in the trenches and the transitional recruiting class only netted us two offensive linemen (a year after only taking one so we could load up on defense) and no defensive tackles.  We'll be playing a lot of young guys up front, and as good as this class looks those guys will still only be RS freshmen.  Things could be even worse if guys like Lewan, Gordon, Washington, Toussaint, etc. look to jump to the NFL.  It feels like a 7-8 win season with Gardner keeping the team in games.  Hopefully he gets his redshirt, recruiting continues at the same rate (and it turns out our guys scout as well as they recruit), and 2014 and beyond look very bright.

I'd say he's got to win a Big Ten Championship by the end of his fourth year. And I think 100% he will do that. But as long as we are competing with Nebraska, OSU,etc and not giving up 37 points to the UMasses of the world I think the fan base will be happy. Under Rodriguez were werent even competing.
