How much attrition in a typical year?
So, the football roster changes all the time. We have already seen attrition, which can be categorized in at least six ways:
- Academic (Tate Forcier?)
- Health related (edit: had Terrence Robinson, wrong name)
- Fit with coaches, scheme, dealing with coaching change (Je'Ron Stokes?)
- PT, or probably lack thereof (Posada?)
- Behavioral (Kellen Jones?)
- Unrenewed 5th year.
Now we see Chris Barnett leaving, seemingly for reason 3 (lack of fit with coaches.)
That means attrition of 3 in the last few days, in Stokes, Posada, and now Barnett. There was also the non-enrollment of Kellen Jones, and a couple others gone for health related reasons, reported at the beginning of Fall practice.
I have two questions:
- Do insiders know if more attrition is expected this year? (no names, position groups, or other hints needed or wanted.)
- If one of you has access to the numbers, I'd like a sense of the running average for attrition over the last 10 years.
Some have suggested that all the recent attrition is pretty normal, and I can buy that. But I'd like to see the numbers. I'm wondering at what point there should be "concern" over the current level of attrition.

I think it's too early to assume that Barnett is leaving because of lack of fit with coaches. Let's wait on the facts for that one, yeah? I think this wouldn't hurt quite as bad if the most recent three transfers weren't at positions that we needed depth in.

I just can't figure this out, but who am I to have a clue why. And honestly, it's none of my business, making speculation merely idle and baseless.
August 25th, 2011 at 11:16 AM ^
But it doesn't matter. Knowing why someone left has no impact on the fact that they are actually gone.
Barnett hurts, but hopefully AJ and Funchess bulk up and are ready.. plus I still havent lost faith in Ricardo to be an absolute monster mismatch.. (ball skills and low end speed reciever with size of a TE... )
Plus, speculating why an 18 year old kid made any decision is equivalent to trying to figure out the connection between grapes and tigers.
August 25th, 2011 at 11:20 AM ^
That's easy - they both have stripes. Except for the grapes.

I don't think that AJ Williams will have to bulk up much. He is already at a pretty solid playing weight and it is more likely that he comes in overweight than under.

there weren't too many balls going his way in the internet clips early on...he's still a good candidate for moving inside if possible/needed. That is a long ways away.

He was recruited by Hoke, not RR, so lack of fit with coaches does not seem accurate. Lack of fit with his pants seems likely to have been the true motivating factor.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:09 AM ^
Earlier this year, Hoke said that he expected more players quitting the program. Can't recall the exact remark.

When a freshman leaves this early, especially one who was headed for a red shirt like Posada, I think it has more to do with being home sick than playing time.
August 25th, 2011 at 11:56 AM ^
I was thinking the same thing. It comes as no surprise that the two freshmen who left also come from rather distant states (Fla and Tx). Kids sometimes show up, realize that they won't be playing early, and decide they don't want to stay that far away from home. It happens, and I wish Barnett the best.

If no names, do you have a link to these tweets?

Terence Robinson is no longer with the team? I thought he was just suspended for one game.

Maybe thinking of Teric Jones?

Or Terrence Talbott

I don't think the ones that leave before classes start count towards APR.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM ^
Yes, plus the new APR rules are not immediately effective either.

Thanks for those links, I bet Florida fans were worried when they lost Mike Blakely.

I have a question that doesn't deserve it's own thread but if the class size reaches 28 like it looks like it may, might we go after a project qb? I only ask this because when the number was 26 we were crammed. With 28 it seems like 2 more spots might give a chance for a little more qb depth?
August 25th, 2011 at 10:19 AM ^
i'd prefer 2 WR 1 RB 1 DT 1OL and one scholie left for random 5 star stud or clark if none come to us.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:33 AM ^
August 25th, 2011 at 10:33 AM ^
We might need another TE.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:30 AM ^
unless we can snake oil some really, really good player from Purdue again. I'd stick to our major needs at WR, DT, OT, and maybe a stud RB like Dunn or Brown. I wouldn't use a spot for another TE either unless a really good player could be found who could play right away (doesn't need a year or two beefing up). With Barnett leaving, we're punked at TE for a while any way. And I can't see giving up a scholarship at a position of greater need just to get another warm body.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:34 AM ^
Does Purdue have any really, really good players?
August 25th, 2011 at 11:24 AM ^
I don't know if you caught any of ESPN's Elite 11 QB show, but Purdue had a QB on there, Austin Appleby..I would guess that's about it..To be honest, that would be pretty funny if we grabbed him from there, personally I would go with NO QB this year, but pissing off Purdue once more may be worth it.
August 25th, 2011 at 12:52 PM ^
I heard he might be pretty underrated. The coaches saw him throw at camp and didn't extend an offer, so I guess that should tell us something.
August 25th, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
because they either de-commit to Michigan or blow their knees out.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:38 AM ^
I couldn't agree more with you. QB is not a need for this class and we already have two TE's committed. There is no reason to miss out on a stud RB or WR just to sign three TE's.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:16 AM ^
so whats the max we can sign this year? as in how many scholies can we back date to this years class?
August 25th, 2011 at 10:22 AM ^
28 is the max size for any big ten class. That means at least 3 early enrollees to backdate to last years class.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:26 AM ^
But I've only heard of one early enrollee. Unless there are other recruits who would both be willing and able to enroll early, it seems that we are limited to 26.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:36 AM ^
I've heard that Royce and Jarrod want to early enroll. Maybe convince a lineman to as well? God knows we may need them in 2012.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
I thought Pharaoh Brown was going to be an EE as well.
August 25th, 2011 at 11:09 AM ^
IIRC, Brown and Magnuson were thinking about it, but decided not to, for whatever reason.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
Someone mentioned Pharoh Brown in another thread as enrolling early too.

I wonder how much attrition happened in Bo's first year. It seems there is some analogy, as both Bo and Hoke came in an ramped up the toughness demands. (Not that all of the transfers are because it is too tough, but still...).
August 25th, 2011 at 11:10 AM ^
Where do you think the saying "Those Who Stay Will Be Champions" comes from. Bo had a ton.
August 25th, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
I don't know anything close to an exact number, but on one of the documentaries I've watched (HBO's about The Game, maybe?) it was apparently really terrible. Like terrible enough that Bo put that sign up in fall camp because there weren't a whole lot of other players he could lose.
August 25th, 2011 at 1:46 PM ^
But with the lack of scholarship limits like today, he may still have had an over 85 man roster. Which probably seemed tiny to him.
August 25th, 2011 at 2:32 PM ^
Yea, the last part is definitey key. OTOH if you're going up against teams with 115(?) scholarship players and you only have 85, that seems like a real disadvantage, whether it actually is or not.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:55 AM ^
I wonder if this opens up the possiblilty of signing Ron Thompson now? I'm not sure how badly we need more tight ends with Funchess and Williams already verbally committed. But there's no doubt about that Thompson is a talented tight end and he already has chemistry with Shane Morris.
