Soliciting Opinions re: Watching Michigan Football Games on DVR
Some of you may recall my posts last season about how I was able to increase my viewing pleasure during gamedays by fast-forwarding through all defensive series so as only to watch the offense. Last year, I found that was the easiest way to prevent cardiac arrest, teaching my toddler words that I would not want him repeating at school, and/or destruction of personal property.
This year, however, I am not sure how to proceed . . . Like most, I am looking forward to a new season, to seeing the new direction of the program, and most imporantly to watching Denard and the offense again. The question is: Will the defense be improved enough to warrant watching that side of the ball as well? In the short term, do I start out the season by watching the entire game? Or do I start out pessimistic (my default position) and go into the season thinking I'm going to continue the trend of skipping watching the defense?
Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Always.

You must be much more heavily medicated than I am, or much less emotionally involved in the games. I seriously had to fast-forward through the defensive series, it was that painful. This coming from a guy that used to tape games on VHS back in the 80s (yes, before the internet) and re-watch them that way.

You asked a question, I gave you a fucking answer. Maybe the answer is that those who watch the whole game are the bigger fans.
My bad if that comment was poorly worded. I truly did not mean it as an insult.
of talent, ability, or results, I will never turn off a Michigan game. We could be down 50-0. That doesn't mean that I will turn off the defense. I want to see Demens, Martin, Roh, ect. I wanna watch them progress. Even if their unit as a whole has a tough time, I invest enough into them that I owe it to myself and them to watch them. You either experience joy with them AND suffer with them, or neither. Your choice. You can't have one or the other.

Ummm... watch the whole fucking game.

I could never start watching a game late and still be patient enough to try and only watch the offense (or what ever you do). It would be killing me to know the score. If you don't have time to watch the games, then just say it. Otherwise watch the entire game.

If you don't watch the entire game you are not a real fan

I apologize for asking an honest question. I should have known the idiots would be out at this late hour.
August 7th, 2011 at 11:17 PM ^
So giving you an honest answer to your honest question makes me an idiot? Real fans take the good with the bad.

Why not just wait and find out the result? Then you can watch the whole game when we win, do something less stressful when we don't.

I would say man up if you're going to watch the game with little ones. It's OK to swear at a bar but not in front of kids.
Oh, and watch the whole game.

I would say you have to at least dip your toe in the water to start the year and watch the defense. You maybe pleasantly surprised as we do actually return almost the entire defense minus Gerg. Buy the kid some ear muffs and learn how to patch drywall just in case.

You watch the whole game no matter how bad it is. A true fan stays through the good and bad. Only the most invested fans could make it through every game for the last 3 years and still love Michigan football. Real fans watch the whole game!

That explains why you were against the coaching change discussions on the forum. If you only watch the offense play you probably thought our team was all around awesome last year.
On how you can comment on the progress of a team you've only watched half of.

It would have been a good point if I had not been being facetious in my OP. I guess I should have made it clear that I watched the vast majority of the games and fast-fowarded only through the defensive series when I couldn't take watching them anymore (e.g. 4th quarters of the second half of season).
The purpose of this thread was to discuss the outlook of the defense early on, whether we should be on "fast-foward" lookout or go in not having to have our fingers on the button. But I guess my subtle point was wasted (or poorly worded in my OP).

If you DVR the game, then just ffw through the commercials, this is totally acceptable. The defense will be improved this year for several reasons, namely that they will be better coached and a year older with with 10? previous starters returning. I would hope to see a FSU/ Texas A&M type of improvment in terms of last year to this season as those two teams were ranked in the 100s in 2009 and quite a jump in defensive production in 2010 from new coaching and many returning starters.
Unless the team gives up 435 yards against Western or something then feel free to go back to your previous DVR habits.

Dude, watch the whole game! It may be tough, but it makes the good times that much sweeter. If anything, just fast forward through the commercials.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that those two chicks are hot.
BTW- This thread and the OP are lame.

suck it up! watch the game. the only reson to watch a game on the dvr is if you have to work or miss it. or you are rewatching it!! if you are a fan then be a fan, good or bad! the D will bounce back some day. hopefully soon. The reason you watch and the players play is because you dont know what is going to happen. This is why they play the game! you cant just skip the parts you dont like. Love Michigan football good or bad. Dont do it half ass!

OT, I know but I've been away from Latin for about 3 years and not knowing what your name means is really bothering me. As far as I can tell it's something along the lines of us you and yourself.
Know thyself

i cant even imagine not watching a whole game. This year if i have to ill skip my own sporting events to watch !

All things reflect this, including Michigan football. In order to fully appreciate the highest of heights you have to have been to the lowest lows. Increase your awareness of both potentials. It'll make our future naitonal championships that much sweeter to have watched every agonizing second of the building process. I was 13 when we won in '97, I remember thinking that it would be a common occurence. Having watched Michigan Football for 20 years I can now more fully put that championship into context and realize how special it truly was.
Negative emotions are rough, but everything happens for a reason, so watch every single second of Michigan football this season and all those to follow, or else your emotional ecstacy will not be as potent when the time comes.
Also this is a good reason to have continued watching the Lions over the last decade plus.
Well said, it's going to be insanity to witness the Lions win the super bowl.

Watch the whole game. If your rewatching it its fine to skip the bad parts though....

Doesn't using a DVR take out enjoyment of watching the game, even if its just to fast forward through commercials?
Yes, it definitely does. However, with a toddler at home it is a necessity - I can't take watching the game in bits and pieces, pausing constantly. I need to be able to watch it in one sitting in peace and quiet.
August 8th, 2011 at 12:01 AM ^
I really cannot believe this even warrants a post. If you are a fan of football and a fan of Michigan there should be no question that you watch the entire game. No need to give up on half the team, the defensive players put out their best effort and deserve your support.

College football is no more than entertainment on a fall Saturday.
If my team wins, I still have to pay my mortgage payment. If they lose, I still have family and friends, food, clothing, and shelter, alcohol, and good music at my disposal.
I'm a pragmatist.
So it becomes about whatever makes me happy. If it makes me unhappy (e.g., defensive series), then I avoid it (fastforward through them). It if makes me happy (e.g., watching athletic qb make defenses look silly), then I embrace it.
I'm not a religious man, and I don't make college football into religion. Or anything more serious than it is.

It makes me happy to hide your post.

General question: Why is an occurence in a football game especially "painful" to see when it's the second time you see it and you know what's coming? The suspense is gone and it can at least be viewed from an analytical point of view at that stage.
If seeing touchdowns surrendered on tape-delay is a serious measure of pain for you, you have either had a very easy life or you just have your priorities way out of sorts.
August 8th, 2011 at 12:45 AM ^
You gotta at least be curious as to how the defense is going to perform. I don't see how you could skip it.
I realize you are suffering from a form of PTSD, but avoidance is not the answer. You have to face your fear.
You have some work to do to redeem yourself. When you're done with these, let me know so we can move on to the Gator Bowl, Wisconsin, Indiana and UMass.
I think you're going to cause a lot of suicides if people watch every one of those videos.
Maybe this OT was a bad idea, but forcing me to watch these is cruel and inhumane punishment!
Yeah, but if it's just people who post comments about a team they haven't actually watched play killing themselves, won't it make the board better?
