OT: USA v. Mexico Gold Cup Final open thread

Submitted by Genzilla on

At 9:00 PM (ET) the US soccer team takes on Mexico in the Gold Cup Final.  These 2 teams do not like each other.  They're playing for pride, for the regional championship, and most importantly, they're playing for a berth in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

If you only get interested in soccer every 4 years for the World Cup, tune in tonight, because it will be that kind of atmosphere in the Rose Bowl.

The game can be seen on Fox Soccer and Univision.

UPDATE:

Yeah, he's been doing good coming off the bench, but he's too good to not have on the field for 90 minutes against Mexico.  He was in a little bit of a slump with illness and missing training, but look back at Donovan's performances in the World Cup and other games against Mexico and you see how he absolutely has to start if he's fully match fit.

Hopefully the US can bring their A game since they haven't looked that good as of late.  Of course it's a pretty heated rivalry, so anything can happen.

has actually looked marginally better since the group stage, while mexico has looked marginally worse.  its going to be close but i think US pulls this one out.

It doesn't cost anything.  You just gotta sign up, you don't even need to confirm your sign-up, or opt-in to recieve emails from them, and the quality is quite good for an online stream.  I've been watching all the US games through the CONCACAF stream and have been satisfied with it.

I hope they can overcome this:

Very disappointing to see in our own country. I hope Dempsey and Donovan run the show.

The Mexicutioner will come through like he seemingly always does against Mexico and Bedoya will reap the benefits of all his hard work this tournament.  I also predict a red card for Mexico at some point.

you better believe I am ready to go ...

ive got us winning 2-1, dempsey and lil pea score in the first half, mb90 pulls off a stunner in the 85th for the win

also, i think it is time we move all games against mexico to alaska so we can actually have a home field advantage

how Bedoya, Donavon and Adu work together to get the ball up to Dempsey against a well put together Mexican side minus the players who failed their drug tests. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Mexico jump ahead but the Nats will definately keep it close as long as Tim Howard is stellar as usual. *knock on wood*

The US need to bring their A game today. I could see Chicharito tearing up our defense if we aren't prepared, especially at the beginning of the game considering how we have struggled to get off to a good start lately.

thats an interesting lineup.  honestly, i think alot of people are making too big of a deal out of the one pass that adu had last game.  outside of that, he didnt do anything...at all...to warrant being a starter.  we'll see how this works.

im a big edu fan and rather see him in the lineup.  i dont get bradely's aversion to keeping him out of it until the 89th minute.

actually brings creativity to the team which USMNT is sorely lacking.  Dempsey is an another creative player but will move to striker to give scoring punch which USMNT really needs.  Juan Ageudelo would be good off the bench if Adu does not work out and Dempsey can slide back to mid-field.

Adu right now. He has great creative and holding skills. Great passer too. Most of Altidores early goals were tap-ins off of Adu's great playmaking. Altidore is a talent too, but Adu can help unleash our forwards.

Mexico lineup: Talavera; Juárez, Moreno, Márquez, Salcido; Barrera, Castro, Torrado, Guardado; Dos Santos, Hernández. (As expected.)

I'm liking Freddy Adu in the starting lineup. He played well and made an impact in a short time last game. For the sake of his future and most of all the future of the team, I hope the US has a good showing and gets the 'w' tonight!

Donovan starting again sure does not hurt either.

Fox Soccer's announcers are saying it will be Donovan up top and Dempsey on the wing.  Trying to use Donovan's speed to get behind the Mexican defense and Dempsey's creativity to get the ball to LD in space.

but I prefer Dempsey up to because he has experience playing striker and can put ball in the goal. I can see Bradley's reasoning on putting Donovan up top.

His starting lineup is an interesting gamble and I think it will prove to be fruitful by the end of the night.
