Jim Delany throws Tressel under the bus
Et tu Mr. B1G?
"If we had known, myself, [Ohio State athletic director] Gene [Smith] and the NCAA all would have handled it a little bit differently," Delany said before departing BCS meetings Thursday.
That doesn't say much. They all have said we would have handled it a bit differently. Personally, I'm happy as hell that Tressel kept his mouth shut. Now he can get what he deserves.
And by a little bit differently he means six game suspension rather than five...
How about 5 (or 6 or infinity) conference games?
That's not sexual harassment. He is just looking for Pryor's pockets so that he can stuff some $100 bills in them.
Anyone else think that the "funny" tag kind of stagnates the humor, renders it prosaic?
Regardless, I'm left with no choice.
Damm you! Back to the friggin dictionary...
yes I 100% agree. I've been thinking that every single time I see it. I don't know about all this prosac, but it definitely dampens the effect.
Prozac definitely dampens the effect.
Tressel to Pryor: "Is this where you got your cool new tat?"
Believe this shows that Pryor's penalty has been reduced from a 5-game suspension to a light, in-game spanking
But at the time, who ever thought that email would come to light?
Certainly not Tressel...
This is butter on the bread though. You know the writing is on the wall when every one scrambles to cover themselves. I think if you listen very closely you'll hear the silent sound of no one of importance rushing to defend Iron Jimmy. Even the NCAA isn't going to let someone the entire world think's is guilty through their fingers. They understand how that will look. Bye bye, Jimmy. I wish I could say I'll treasure the memories, but really only these last few are worth recalling.
No way Delany would have included Gene Smith and NCAA officials in the scope of his answer unless he has spoken to them and knows this is pretty much how they feel. The NCAA is pissed!
and the minimum punishment was set by the way they handled Dez Bryant who lied to them. He missed a whole season and he didn't knowingly play any ineligible players.
The problem with Delaney is the Big Ten supposedly investigated loaner car gate and found nothing wrong with Pryor being given a Tahoe on loan to drive out of state for the weekend despite no source of income to be able to afford said Tahoe. For that matter why he has three tickets all in loaner cars. Did the Big Ten find a case where this was done for another OSU student that wasn't an athlete? If not it is an impermissible benefit. The Big Ten is partly reponsible for Tressel thinking he could get away with this.

I can't imagine that the players were not asked if ayone on the Ohio State payroll knew of their dealings with Mr. Rife. If this is the case, and they lied, they should be done for the year according to precedent.
Also, wasn't Dez Bryant also banned from participating in any team functions..i.e. practices, workouts, etc.?
Also, doesn't the NCAA reserve the right to ammend the penalties if they discover new information? And if this is the case, couldn't the NCAA then declare that the students should not have been eligible for the bowl game and force Ohio State to vacate the win?
Let our team beat their butt and get the final push over the edge.
Maybe we are better off that RR did not land him after all......Hindsight is 20/20!
I don't think I'm alone here but frankly I was actually a little relieved when he didn't. If I'm remembering correctly, during the recruiting process some of the Sarniak stuff and a few other worrisome things came to light. Since then I'd say that he certainly has gone above and beyond to prove that we were lucky he passed.
Jim Tressell + the current osWho situation amounts to a pile of garbage. Hope the ncaa finally does what they need to do with these clowns.
As much as Mich. got dogged out last year.
Delany knows that people don't like "Leaders" and "Legends," yet he's not handling that differently. So when do you believe him?
lol, "underrated"
So if they would have known that the coach was covering up five ineligible players for a whole season and then strong-armed them into staying for their Senior seasons during the coverup he would handled things differently? The Big 10 would have lost the bowl game if he would have done that.
that would not have factored into any part of it . . . . .At All. Far more serious, and the result now is that OSU makes the B1G look like, or worse than the SEC. Which on a whole far far closer to a pro league than even OSU.

Delaney especially has been way out there in pointing out the academic sham that is the SEC.
The whole OSU mess nullifies his argument. If left uncontested, it says the B1G is no better than the SEC. In fact it says it's worse because not only does it do the same kind of crap, but it's hypocritical about it.
The rest of us B1G fans have been saying for years that OSU is an SEC school in the midst of the Big Ten conference. Now even Delaney has to wake up to that reality and deal with it.
He has to get rid of Tressel and put the hammer down on OSU.
I'm thinking that, after Cam Newton, TP & Co and their free passes to play in the Fiesta Bowl, etc..., another egregiously disproportionate penalty/transparent act of deference to corporate interests would only push the weight of public opinion towards collapse.
For that reason, I guess I'm kind of optimistic that they may actually impose a penalty that comports with the severity of the offense.
How is Gee doing on that whole getting fired by Tessel thing? Have we gotten any follow-up on that one? What a bunch of clowns.
The interplay between the Big 10 and Tressel is going to be interesting to watch, but it doesn't seem like Delany's throwing Tressel under the proverbial bus. "Throw under the bus" - to me, at least - connotes the "thrower" acting unfairly, usually to evade some blame of their own.
There isn't any unfairness in what Delany did here. He was lied to, unwittingly acted on the basis of those lies, and now he's just saying that if he knew the true story things would have played out differently. Seems fair to me.
I don't think it involves anything unfair, I just think that "throwing someone under the bus" means that the person went from a position of support to unwilling to maintain that position.
Delany's de facto position is to support all 11(12) coaches, and I think he's passed that point with Tressel now. Truthfully, it's almost his responsibility to condemn Tressel, as this story harms the rest of the conference. Delany would be remiss if he didn't make it clear that the B1G doesn't support lying and cheating. I'm not saying he has to say "TRESSEL DID IT HE'S GUILTY AS HELL" because that wouldn't be responsible. But he should come out in a packaged kind of presser and say that the Big Ten doesn't condone knowingly breaking rules and lying.
I'd rather he revealed the "super secret" division names that they came up with, before getting us off the trail with "Leaders and Legends".
But we are the legendary leaders!
Throws Jim Tressel under the bus
I'm just hoping Tressel doesn't throw Gee under the bus...
I see what you did there.
Delaney needs to grow some balls and dole out punishment on Tressel. If the SEC, the dirtiest of all conferences, suspended Pearl for lying, then Delaney needs to act accordingly. He can't talk trash about SEC and then when push comes to shove just ignore the matter. Ball's in your court Delaney.
This is interesting, but what power does the Big 10 have over individual coaches? In other words, do our MGoReaders have an idea of what punishments the Big 10 can dole out with respect to a coach?
Any of you lawyas out there know what legal recourse (if any) there may be on a Big 10 level? Certainly he can cause Tressel political damage, but can he take any action against Tressel in the name of the Big 10?
They have the power to suspend him under their ethical conduct policy. The B1G suspended Bobby Knight for this at least once.
Is that really throwing him under the bus?
Did Ohio have this much fun at our expense when the Jihad was waged on us? I'm thinking yes, even though the Jihad was bullshit and their fans couldn't look objectively or even intelligently at our situation. This might be more fun for us though because everyone thinks they should be fucked, not just us Michigan homers.
My recollection is that several of their players said it was nonsense.
bullshit pretty much immediately. No way you can practice that much and still only go 3-9.
If Delany had known then, then all he could have done then is what he can do now; put pressure on the AD and the school administration to the right thing for the B1G. Ultimately, the NCAA has the highest suit in this case, so I don't think the B1G is going to issue sanctions against the school.
It will be interesting how long tOSU brass lets this go. Maybe less now that Delany has commented on the situation.

I find it interesting that the SEC suspended Bruce Pearl for half of Tennessee's conference games and at least so far, the Big Ten is okay with Tressell missing 4 non-conference games and only one conference game. The only non-conference game where I could see OSU possibly stumbling without Tressell is when they go to Miami.
