2011 ESPN College BB Recruiting - Updated
The ESPN 2011 basketball recruiting page was updated yesterday (not sure what changed from previous version exactly) and there are a few notes of interest for those who have not visited the site.
- Michigan has two top-100 players in Carlton Brundidge (#73) and Trey Burke (#81)
- MSU has 1 top-100 player in Branden Dawson, which if my math is correct, is one less than Michigan
- TSIO has 4 players in the top 51...shit
- Michigan's class is not in the top 25 despite having two top-100 players. However, you can chalk that up to having a smaller class than many of the schools on this list.
- Kentucky has 4 players in the top 18. Can't stand that slimeball Calipari
- Marshall Plumlee (#35) and Amir Williams (#41) are both top-50 big men we were close with. At least that is my belief, so please don't take it away from me.
This information is nothing new, but I thought I would post some of the more interesting points.

St. John's 9 person class is crazy.
all of their starting 5 was seniors and i think they had a couple seniors on the bench so makes sense i guess
Thought they had 9 seniors this year. No, that is not a typo.
Yea, I think they had 9 or 10 seniors, you don't see that very often in basketball.
to trumpet the fact that Michigan has more top 100 guys than MSU when Dawson is ranked 22 overall and is a consensus 5 star to all of the sites. I'm really happy with our class, but Dawson is a pretty big talent.
it's a little misleading to label Dawson a consensus 5 star when a.) he is not a 5 star according to ESPN b.) Rivals has not updated their rankings since August 2010 c.) consensus from MCD All-American game seems to be that he is a great athlete/rebounder, but not necessarily the most skilled guy(and from my view of the game this seemed to be true), hence his drop in ranking/ratings on behalf of ESPN
Maybe Valenti should read this. He keeps putting down UMs bball recruiting, and has been bragging how strong MSU's is.
Wouldn't matter, Valenti would simply discredit ESPN as idiots and proclaim Rivals to be the ultimate recruiting resource.
Every time that name(or radio station) is mentioned it is a win for the dark side. Hit that band button. TKA or DFN deserve your attention a little more...
People still listen to that hack?
Maybe I'm missing something, but ESPN shows that both Marshall Plumlee and Amir Williams have singed letters of intent with Duke and OSU, respectively. What do you mean by "we were close with"?
EDIT: "were". I suppose you're trying to claim that we have a slightly better class because we almost got these recruits.
he's claiming that Michigan has shown the ability to at least get serious consideration from top recruits, which is encouraging for future recruiting.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's at all true that we were close to getting Williams or Plumlee.
Ding ding ding! Correct on both points.
Amir Williams never seriously considered Michigan. Michigan in his list was a window dressing and he wanted to be out of state all along.
Well balanced programs with experienced juniors and seniors are proving to be as valuable, if not more valuable, than "one and done" recruits.

and "this guy who wasn't highly ranked is awesome" is a terrible way to analyze recruiting rankings.
Remember all the jackasses floating around mgo saying we should fire Beilein? Them dudes is pretty quiet right now.
What a hack. Guy has a .200 winning percentage.
/s
getting respectable ranking for 2012 class.
MSU doesn't have one less top-100 guy, it has FIFTY PERCENT FEWER.
Is this another freaking Plumlee?
Kentucky- #1 PF, #1 SF, #1 PG
How many years until this is a reality for MBB?
#16 Tony Wroten Jr. sounds almost exactly like Darius Morris
Looks like Michigan (if Morris and Hardaway stay) will battle Ohio State next year for the conference crown. Indiana may be a dark-horse. MSU, Illinois and Purdue in the next tier, maybe.
Ohio State has Sullinger, D. Thomas and Craft coming back -- a solid core -- and a conference-best freshmen class, but Michigan has a veteran team and maybe better karma. Will be fun.
And what they bring in, they are going to be heavy favorites to repeat as Big Ten champs. I think Michigan played well against them and will again next year, but I still think OSU is the favorite. Michigan is in the next group of what I think are 5 teams that will be solid next year.
Indiana: Showed big improvement and was young, really good big man coming in, and really watch out the year after that when they have a monster class coming in. This is a team on the big time rise (it's about time thanks to Sampson).
MSU: Still has a lot of good pieces to be honost. If they realize that they aren't a jump shooting team and actually start rebounding and playing defense like they have in the past, they have the talent to compete. Dawson is also a good player coming in, and the rest of their class will provide much needed depth in the back court.
Illinois: Really good class coming in, should be strong. They lose a lot though, and Webber still does very little with the amount of talent he actually has. They will be solid, but I think they are the bottom group on this list.
Purdue: Maybe will get back the ever injured Hummel and should have some solid talent around him still. We'll see if he's even the same player though. I think they are just a bit abouve Illinois in the ranking going in to next year.
So in conclusion I have:
1. OSU; 2. Michigan; 3. MSU; 4. Indiana; 5. Purdue; 6. Illinois 7-11. 12. Penn St.
Indiana showed big improvement? They followed up their 4-14 2010 Big Ten campaign by going 3-15. Count me as less than sold on Crean as a bench coach.
I take back the Indiana made a lot of improvement. But they were still fairly young and their recruiting is getting better. I'm not big on Crean either, but he was good at his last stop and I think when he gets his players and they get out of their Sampson hole they will be alright.
