This question showed up in one of my classes yesterday

Harbaugh is great and all,

Harbaugh is great and all, but it was an interesting decision to replace Glasglow with Gaping Chasm

This is just blatantly false.

This is just blatantly false. I was in the first row near the edge of the student section (near the uprights), so directly in front of where the TD was scored. There were at least 2 MSU players I distinctly remember who were taunting us directly (waving at us, beckoning at us, etc.) and literally the girl next to me was screaming at them to check on their injured player, who outside of maybe 1 or 2 other guys they were completely ignoring.

It was absolutely ridiculous. Not until at least 5 or 10 minutes after the game had ended did the MSU team as a whole put their attention on the injury (which they did with the everyone-on-their-knees-in-prayer type thing). This was well after it was clear the dude was seriously hurt and well after multipole MSU players were taunting the students. Pathetic, classless, you name it.

I have heard this before and

I have heard this before and initially agreed, but now I don't quite understand it. The whole point of the crowd when Michigan is on defense is to be as loud as possible. But the wave actually quiets the crowd significantly, since most of the stadium is just watching the wave until it comes to them.

And I can't buy the argument that Michigan's offense is distracted by the wave - if our players are actually losing focus because they're concentrating on the wave, we've got bigger problems on our hands.

The "best" arguments I've seen are that the crowd should be naturally 100% focused on the game when we're on offense simply because we're on offense and need to cheer them on (but waves are only attempted in blowouts, making this much less important), and that if we score a TD the wave will likely abruptly end (fair concern, but not a dealbreaker in my mind, especially in blowouts where we're more likely to prod around for a while eating clock, which is exactly what happened today).

Haha thanks man, I'm

Haha thanks man, I'm definitely not and I absolutely don't regret how it played out. In fact my only regret is that I didn't film the whole thing from conception to completion :P

Yeah it was definitely

Yeah it was definitely unfortunate that we shut down the band horse song so perhaps it could have waited a bit. Overall though I think it helped that the conditions were perfect: you had an almost-full Big House, game was getting kind of boring, absolutely perfect weather (so the crowd was energized), and in hindsight it was a good time to start the wave since very little happened in-game over the next 5-10 minutes.

However, I will certainly keep in mind the timing if I am ever so fortunate to once again be placed in the enviable position of domino-starting a Big House wave.

I have to take credit for the wave

I'm right in the front row right on the edge of the student section (near the upright) which is where the wave will almost always start if it is attempted. At about the 4 minute mark of the third quarter at a break, I turned to my friend and asked relativelly casually if this would be a good time to try and start the wave (unilke most students, I understand that the wave should only be attempted during a blowout, and I judged the 21-0 score to be enough of one given how pathetic UNLV was looking offensively).

My friend responded in the affirmative, and then the girl standing next to me (who I didn't know) also agreed and said we should start the wave. We both said it a few more times with a bit more volume, then in a hard-to-describe fashion, other people in the vicinity began kind of chanting off-beat "wave, wave, wave" which swelled a bit until it was clear that it was time to start the wave. At this point, a couple people literally right next to the aisle started the count, and after only a couple failed attempts, it was off to the races.

As a senior who has been to almost every game, I'm almost 100% certain I've never seen a more perfectly executed Big House-wide wave. The entire stadium was totally into it, and it went exactly as planned: two run-throughts around the stadium, a brilliant slowdown wave, a fast wave, a perfectly-executed reverse wave that left our section in shock that it actually worked, and then a split wave that was so successful we weren't even sure what we were supposed to do since it was so rare to ever get that far.

And of course, it all came back to my offhand comment to my friend that perhaps this would be a good time to start the wave - who knows if it would have happened if I hadn't said anything. It was easily one of my proudest moments as a Michigan student. No doubt I'll be telling my grandchildren about the time I started the most successful wave of my era as a student (and the first successful complete wave in the Jim Harbaugh era).

What a moment.

I'm not sure you quite

I'm not sure you quite understand mutual funds too if you're claiming they can charge 2%. I challenge you to find even one mutual fund that charges even 1.5%, let alone 2%. Most mutual funds sit right in the 1% range. I'm not saying that's too high or too low, but only hedge funds are going to charge you 2%.

You appear to be sorely

You appear to be sorely mistaken, I am sorry to report. Tyus Battle is a 2016 recruit, not 2015. He wouldn't be on campus until the 2016-2017 season even if he did re-commmit to Michigan.

Got section 31 row 8

My impression of my seating group was that we all had perfect attendance points, which may not in fact be true because I wasn't expecting to be further back than maybe row 5. Anyone else with perfect attendence end up this far back? (I know row 8 is still close in the grand scheme of things, but relative to the very front)

Dexter made me catch my breath in a different way

By the end of its run. It was truly take-your-breath-away awful. What a fall from grace post-season 4, I'm ashamed to see it make your list.

The battle for house supremacy

Mom went to UCLA, dad went to Cal, younger brother will be enrolling at Cal in the fall. Of course we've already taken out Cal, now it's time to take care of UCLA and establish once and for all the #1 school in my household: MICHIGAN. GO BLUE!

(No subject)

This is overwhelming

It would appear that it may in fact be happening...

Already some great responses

Already some great responses here, but I'll add my own as a sophomore in Ross (third year overall though) who took 280 winter semester last year (and will eventually complete the minor):

The main things I think to point out are 1. The mix of opinions on the difficulty of the class is very accurate and 2. 280 is on a different level than 183. As someone coming into 183 with no experience but expecting at least a somewhat challenging class, 183 was a walk in the park - some decent time spent on the projects, but it came very easily to me and I enjoyed it quite a lot. At that point, I was convinced I wanted to minor in CS. But while 183 weeds out the really low-hanging fruit, 280 is the soul-breaker, as it will take out people like me who cruised through 183 and thought they could handle CS but didn't know quite what they are getting into.

So to put it bluntly, it's not an easy course, and unless you're really strong at picking up coding concepts (which granted there are people who are) it will be a huge step up from 183. The difficulty whacked me at first and the first exam put me in a huge hole (note of caution: 280 exams are immensely more challenging than 183), but I put in the work on the projects and exam prep to dig out of it. Not sure if they're still letting students work on the projects with partners, but if they are I highly recommend taking advantage of that and securing a good partner if possible - that will help a ton with the projects.

If it's something you really want to pursue, by all means go for it, and I'm still planning on completing the minor even though I'm taking a break between 280 and 281 (not recommended though, I'm screwing myself over by academic trajectory has been unconventional). Also, if possible I would take 280 and 203 in the same semester so you can go straight to 281 next semseter, since 203 is also a prerec for 281. Not speaking from experience here, but these are things I've heard from CS kids who have gone through this process.

Hope this help! Also DeOrio and Ringenberg are both great, you'll be fine with either with them.

Kenpom... oh wise one... why

Kenpom... oh wise one... why have you forsaken us...

You can go with A. Not

You can go with A. Not serious, but it was still disappointing to see.

Yeah, that was just insanely

Yeah, that was just insanely ridiculous, absolutely inexcuable and beyond embarassing for whatever dumbshit fans were trying to start it there. Forget that it was a tie game at the time, still in the first half, the wave starts WITH THE STUDENT SECTION, PERIOD. It is such a self-evident fact I was trying to figure out if that was actually what I was seeing, because I couldn't believe even the stupidest of fans would try that, but obviously I underestimated their intelligence.

Complain about the students for trying to get it started in a seven point game in the third quarter (and I have, we shouldn't have been doing that, although to be fair it didn't get far), but what tthose fans did in the second quarter transcends any student stupidity with the wave. That's just on another level.

(I responded to your post in

(I responded to your post in the other thread too, but here it is repasted):

You'd be proud of me, I was right in between the two completely idiotic groups of 3 who were trying to start the wave and I was quite vocal in trying to shut it down. They were still able to get it through a chunk of the student section, but the other side of the student section was having none of it, so by the time it got out of the student section it was over.

I really wish students had more knowledge of game day traditions like the appropriate time to start a wave. I did what I could as an individual student who happens to sit right where the wave starts, I hope it made a difference.

Those rules (blowout, late third/fourth qtr, on defense, etc.) have been posted it looks like here, and it should be mandatory reading for students.

Did you see my response to

Did you see my response to your post about the students screwing up the wave in yesterday's stadium experience thread? Since you can't stop posting about how the students screwed up the wave, is the doing-it-on-offense issue which was discussed yesterday the only screw-up?

Yep, today showed the main

Yep, today showed the main reason why we should be doing it when Michigan is on defense and not offense. I also kinda like the angle that by doing it when the other team is on offense (and of course we're in a blowout), it's kind of subtly disrespecting them by showing that the entire stadium cares more about doing the wave than paying attention to their drive. That's not as big a factor as the Michigan-TD-interrupts-the-wave issue, but it's another point in favor of doing it on defense and not offense.

So the matter is settled. Defense it is!

My instinct is also that it

My instinct is also that it should have been on defense, but I didn't realize that at the game so I didn't try to stop it when it started. For future games I'll try and get it to line up when we're on defense.

Really? I thought they were

Really? I thought they were epic in their power, and they shot a bunch of them out.

Or are you another disgruntled alumni who is inexplicably upset that they pretty much only shot them at the student section, i.e. the most important part of the stadium?

I'm a student who is right on

I'm a student who is right on the edge of the student section literally right where the wave started today and usually starts, so I feel I'll have some influence going forward this season on getting the wave done right. The big issue I think is that we did it on offense and not defense, thus we scored the touchdown and that kept us from being able to do to the split wave following the slow one. Otherwise I thought it worked well, only 1 or 2 failures before success (thanks to the pathetic alumni section next to us), we did it middle of the third quarter which is when it should be done, and of course in a blowout.

So was doing it on offense the only problem with the wave as it was done today?

I can't tell if you're being

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but first of all, biting can be very dangerous. If skin is penetrated you can get some nasty diseases (see: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/218901-overview), and penetrating skin is not all that difficult (in this particular case Suarez was idiotic enough to bite through clothing so it's very unlikely here, but the intent is the same). Getting cleated in the ankle is no joke either, but I don't think I'm going to get a potentially life-threatening disease from it, so you may want to re-think your preferences here.

And yes, it is malicious, disturbing, violent, and *extremely* abnormal and concerning for anyone older than kindergarten-aged to engage in such an act, let alone on the stage Suarez does it on and on repeated occasions. If you can't see that then I have nothing more to say.

To me it's pretty much lifetime ban or bust

A repeat offender of such a malicious, disturbing act of violence should really be a lifetime ban from anything FIFA has jurisdiction over. Period.

The only alternative I'd really accept is for FIFA to mandate Suarez receive serious, intensive, professional help, and only after receiving approval from multiple pysicians that he is in a better frame of mind would he be alllowed back (and even then I would argue that should come with a minimum 1 year ban).

Maybe this comes off too harsh, maybe not, but a 4 or 5-game suspension (which I fear is in the cards) just won't cut it, and will do FIFA no favors in winning back even a morsel of public opinion.

Context has to be considered

But I would say in general if you're in grade school there's no excuse for biting. Earlier than that, then yeah I don't think it necessarily raises any alarms, but 1st/2nd grade and up, from my experience (which to be fair is professionally limited to a camp that's very well-regulated and has generally pretty well-adjusted kids) and that becomes a big problem very fast.

I mean, just the fact that we're discussing the ages when biting can be considered at least somewhat acceptable as being well in the single-digits only underscores the incredible childness and impetuousness of Suarez, a grown fucking man. I mean Jesus Fucking-with-a-capital-F Christ.

I've been a summer camp counselor for 5/6-year-olds for 5 years

We had one major biting incident where a kid bit another kid in the upper back, and needless to say it was a huge problem for the kid who did it that took a lot of time to sort out, and while I wouldn't admit it at the time it was clear that the biting kid needed some serious help, help which I believe he started getting soon after the incident.

At that age, shit like that happens but even then it's a huge deal. For it to happen with adults, on this stage, is almost incomprehensible.

Caution on Dexter

The first 4 seasons are fantastic stuff no doubt, but I would give major warning to anyone who wants to watch beyond that, as it very quickly become a pathetic, audience-insulting, disaster of a shit-show in the blink of an eye. Looking back at the first 4 seasons, I guess some of the writing on the wall was there for a fall from grace, but boy... it's like the writers, actors, and production team (save Jennifer Carpenter, who only got better as the series progressed) all took a collective dump after season 4 and looked to make the worst show afterwards, in every way possible.

It's almost worth watching in a perverse way to see an epic train wreck the likes of which TV rarely sees, but if you're coming in cold I'd just stop at the high that was season 4 and leave it at that.

In a very similar boast as you

Being on the west coast reallly hurts in the spoiler-avoidance departent

I'm at my internship until exactly 4:30, thereafter it takes 10-15 to get home, including a 5 minute walk in open streets where God knows what I'll see. Of course just getting to that point would be a miracle, given that in my office the nice window offices have TVs that I can see when I walk past, which have had World Cup games on over the past week and will surely have the game on come Thursday morning. Given my daily interactions with other guys in the office, it's highly unlikely I'd be able to keep from seeing the result, even with informing everyone that I'm DVR'ing and don't want to be spoiled (and knowing my co-workers enough that they wouldn't pull a dick move and spoil me on purpose).

OR... since I only intern 3 days a week, just come in on Friday instead of Thursday, assuming I can get proper clearence. That sounds like a much better idea... perks of not working full-time (yet)!

But they did have the good

But they did have the good sense to instill an obssessive devotion to 'MURICA

FUCK YEAH

Reading the open thread for the game

Looks like a carbon copy of the Michigan-Kansas TREY BURKE game. Absolute despair and people calling it over well before the finish... then BANG JOHN "TREY" BROOKS TO THE MOTHER FUCKING RESCUE.

But seriously, really hilarious to read that thing knowing what transpired.

I like the random assortment

I like the random assortment of fruits in the middle.

No need to speculate on the potential U.S. venues

Here were the ones the U.S. ultimately went with in their bid:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_2022_FIFA_World_Cup_bid#Candidate_venues

Unfortunately, Michigan Stadium was cut on the final bid. :(

Unfortunately Malone is

Unfortunately Malone is retiring and will not be teaching at Michigan anymore, which is unfortunate because she was imo the best 101 professsor and one of the best Econ professors at the university. Someone posting above apparently didn't like Malone and thought her 4.5 Ratemyprofessor was inaccurate, but if anything I don't think that's high enough.

Not that any of this matters anymore of course, and I've heard good things about Gerson. Proulx is the one to avoid.

Hey I have shit in my pants

Hey I have shit in my pants from this episode *and* softball. Your post wouldn't be off base in either one.

If you use out of state tuition for Michigan

We get a huge boost to $40,496, which gets us all the way to the Sweet 16 when we lose a last-dollar heartbreaker to Duke, at $40,665. Damn shame.

The kissiest of all kisses of

The kissiest of all kisses of deaths. They are so screwed. I could not be happier.

The SEC isn't the only thing he slobbers over

Worse than I remember

And that's saying something because I was ready to fucking assasinate those refs like fucking Ezio by the end of the game.

And we aren't even at the block yet. God damn.

I see this argument made here a lot and it's just not viable

The committee has stated *many* times recently that they do not consider conference placing, nor do they consider conference RPI in their seeding decisions. The fact that we won the conference, or that we won it by 3 games, makes no difference in the committee's eyes, which I believe is fair on their part because of how unbalanced conference schedules can be these days. Regardless if you disagree with this or not, the argument needs to stop being made here and elsewhere because we know definitively that the committee does not consider it.

We deserve a 2 seed, don't get me a wrong, but it is NOT because we won the Big Ten by 3 games. It's because we beat Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin all on the road, among other reasons.

We've done it

No under 12 timeout!! SUCK IT ESPN AND TV ADVERTISERS
