World Cup Day 8 Open Thread - w/ US vs. Slovenia Goodness!

You know, considering there's a lacrosse category on here, you'd think there'd be a soccer. We'll see how much of a soccer blog it is today. Big game, on a workday, 6:30 am west coast time. Those who don't have to work probably aren't awake. ESPN's money at least kept us from 7:30...

In no other sport do the fans hope to tie the inferior team so they can have a chance to sneak on by in the tournament.

I know soccer fans always cheer big time for their team to win, but because of the format (draws allowed, more than one team advances in tournaments, etc), I always feel like soccer discussions end up with fans discussing what levels of losing and sucking are acceptable.

Where's your pride, man?!? No levels of losing and sucking are acceptable. Sometimes they're unavoidable, but you should never be OKAY with it.

If you look off the ball there is a US guy just holding on to one person who appeared to be trying to get back for a clear.  That's the only thing I could see, but both teams were grabbing, I don't know, it was a tough call.

Edit: Never mind

And conspiracies start. You do stuff like card for handing a ball off your face, you look stupid. You call back goals for no reason, and it seems like bias.

In a word, yes.  Soccer is even more in the dark ages, re: officiating, than Major League Baseball is.  There is exactly one man on the pitch with the authority to hand out cards & watch the game from the center.  Yes, the linesmen help out, but let's face it, it's just not enough.  Hockey has 3 (or, now at some levels, 4) referees for a game with half the players and, what, a quarter the space?  Having so few officials on the field is idiotic, and needs to be changed.

Not happy with the horrid call. But this almost went back to being a college football blog too soon.

for Penn St fans (assuming they are American). They are probably having heart attacks complaining about refs, again.

Anyway, that ref sucked and should not be allowed to ref a FIFA game ever again. Let's do what Americans do best and complain to the FIFA board.

Great comeback made possible by class finishes from Dempsey and Bradley (saving his old man's bacon).  Should be in great shape to qualify, but if Algeria can hold the English we'll be fucking mint.

Can FIFA stop being PC and give us refs from a real league instead of some clueless guy from Mali?
